Having listened to a number (about a dozen) of his post-match interviews from Oxford, which I found him a bit “samey”, I thought he came across as enthused tonight.

    Wish Saturday would hurry up!

Hopefully his time with the squad will transpire to a good performance on Saturday

  2. He comes across as very measured, intelligent and a well balanced approach to everything in both football and life generally

He talks very well and obviously knows the football industry both positive & negative elements

I find him quite interesting to listen to and easy to take on board what he says

What a game!  Can't see us ever being able to play at that level.

The skill levels and pace was amazing, the quality on the pitch was different level and made what was a great spectacle - Premier league at its very best

Miles apart. I think Manning is closer to Pearson in more ways. When he talks about behaviours as working hard, running, winning hun duels, wanting to learn. It’s pretty similar to Nige.

More akin to Pep and his coaching ethos - pretty sure he drills his teams this way especially when trying to get the ball back

Now i'm a bit confused after reading a few of the above posts on here. I thought our players were set up in a system which goes from 1st team right way down through U18's etc. And any change of Manager would be seamless as players were so drilled in this style of play?

Now Manning has arrived and people say he doesn't really play the system that we have? Either we have to rip it all up and almost retrain the players or the Manager has to change?

Also i notice a lot of comments about him loaning in players, not a thing we are really used to for a while. Again, will this block pathways of players Tinnion is trying to push to be included?

I'm all for a fresh start now, but I hope he is allowed to do his job as after all he has the experience albeit at a lower level.

He does play a 4 at the back at times and he has enough in this squad to adapt to whatever way he sets us up. It may be the case that we get some loans in January to supplement the style he wishes us to play

I’m intrigued to see what effect he has on our playing style

Seems like this is done with an announcement tomorrow morning likely.

I'm surprised so many are dismissing Manning. I think given the position we are in and what we are specifically looking for he's a very good fit. He's been coaching since he was 21 and has a decent amount of L1 experience.

Mousinho wasn't going to leave Pompey so Manning made next most sense.

People bemoaning lack of experience should take a look at who Millwall have just appointed. Gotta start somewhere...

It's City, and the structure behind him still gives me a lot of concern, but Manning is a good appointment I reckon and about as good as we could've hoped for.

Who’s his No2 at Oxford? I think whoever he brings in of his staff will also be important in how he develops our playing style as he certainly has Oxford playing some fantastic attacking football apparently having spoken to a few people I know who follow Oxford. They weren’t sure when he joined earlier this year but say he’s got them playing the best football they have seen at the club in the time they’ve been following which is 30 years

Appreciate it’s L1 but playing principles and coaching apply at any level, just the players are a higher quality the further up the pyramid you coach - hopefully 😄

This thread has the makings of a OTIB classic.

Mark my words there will be some humble pie being served in 6-12 months time. Manning has a tough job but we as supporters are so out of touch with modern football coaching in the main - we are the WORST people to determine he is the wrong person for this club.

Speak to people in the game and read up about Manning and based on who we are, it's a perfectly acceptable if not a very good choice for us.

Too many on here are blinkered by football manager and 'names' that they fail to see, the game of football has evolved massively in the last 24 months. At professional level, it's being played in a way and system not seen before and some clubs will get left behind.

NP was stuck in the old school approach (nothing wrong with that, if your thing) but we've actually gone and got ourselves a progressive coach, that develops youth and yet posters are besides themselves at who is coming in.

I understand what a forum is for, but some perspective wouldn't be a bad thing.

At last, a well balanced and informed post rather than the deluded comments of those who expected a high profile coach who was going to wave a magic wand and get us promoted

If it is Manning then I’m happy to back him and support the players rather than write him off before he’s even started

It's what happens when you sell your best players and don'treplacethem. Sound familiar? Plus, sign over-paid Chelsea cast offs. Sound familiar? And lose a Playoff final.

    A toxic mix.

Never mind. One less team to worry about.

Ironic that they signed Palmer & JD from us

  9. If you base FLs ability on his Championship experience then he has done it with Derby albeit with a couple of good loans from the Prem

It would certainly raise the profile of the club and inject a lot of interest from the football media

I wouldn’t be too disappointed to see him brought in if he can attract a few loans in January to boost a decent squad that we already have and kick on and up the division

  10. It would be ironic for Eustace to come in now and reap the benefits of players coming back from injury and getting us in the top 6 and the playoffs at the end of the season

If he doesn’t then I fear the Lansdowns and BT will be getting pelters 😄

  11. I do wonder that when a new head coach is brought in and by some strange miracle he gives us a positive bounce, we get in the top 6 and then pip Ipswich to second place on the last day of the season and get automatic promotion what we will all think when looking back at NP’s sacking and the comments on this forum over the past few days

Supporters are a fickle breed and only seek success for their club, it doesn’t matter who, or how they just want it

SL wants and needs a buyer and will get a far better return if we are a Prem club - maybe he is getting impatient?

He’s tried chucking money at it, tried being patient and build from within but realised Covid hit plans to keep home grown talent and had to sell due to FPP

I have met NP a few times and he is nothing like the press conference prickly character he portrays. He is chatty, pleasant and interesting.

He is however very "old school" in his methods and this has been useful in sorting out the mess he inherited but not necessarily the way for the club going forward (in their opinion).

Sadly it may have been he was only ever really brought in as a "fire fighter" short/medium term appointment and the plan was always to replace him around this time.

I sincerely hope this is the case and was always the strategy but it will only become apparent when a new head coach is brought in and what the club do in the January window

hopefully we can get our unfit players back on the pitch and start gaining some consistent performances

When you look at the recent results, we have not performed poorly and losing by the odd goal against the top two sides is no disgrace bearing in mind the injuries and using under 21 players

I just hope the board choose wisely regards a new coach as it needs to be someone the supporters are happy with and can help us kick on to the next level but I won’t hold my breath

  13. NP was given a big task to sort out an overpaid underperforming squad and keep us in the Championship

I think he more than achieved that brief and has stabilised the playing side albeit with a level of inconsistency but now with a much smaller & tighter squad

I’m not sure what the hierarchy expect from NP when he’s had very little scope and budget to work with?

Unless SL wants to spend and go for it  again then we will have to wait and see a la Rooney at Brum but learn the lessons of the past and stick with NP and give him some funds to push us another step forward and if he fails then that is the time to change
