    00s - Adriano Basso?

Problem by the 10s is they never stay long enough! You'd arguably say Adam Webster - but he was with us such short period of time - you'd just as well say Tammy Abraham; even though he was on loan, he played just about as many games!

I had thought of Adam Webster especially as he was like finding an abstract painting at a second hand shop only to flog it a year later because it was a Picasso!

How could I forget Adriano Basso? He would be my pick for the 00s. Great shout.

  2. If anyone remembers Tony from our Div1 days, here is a topical quiz question for you plus a bit of trivia.

Trivia first...He was also honoured by Renfrewshire Council after having a gritter named after him, with 'Tony Gritzpatrick' coming out on top after a public vote to name the local authority's nine gritting machines. (Courtesy of Wikipedia)

Quiz question... what is the connection between Tony and Christmas Day, 1976? (Clue, I doubt if anyone will achieve this in years to come).

    Hmmm.

Back in the early 18th Century, the Kingdoms of England (which then included Wales) and Scotland unified and signed a Treaty to form the Kingdom of Great Britain, later incorporating Ireland to form the State of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, encompassing all four (Home) Nations or Countries.

England and ScotIand are different Countries (each with their own jurisdictions - don't get me started on the reasons why Scottish MPs can vote in the UK Government, whereas English MPs have no such rights in the Scottish Government), although both form part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

I believe, therefore, that RM travelled from the north-east of one Country (Scotland) to the south-west of another Country (England).

    As you were.

Phil, as the self-appointed marker for this post, I award it a C- as it is factually incorrect!

In order to get an A+, please add the word Northern somewhere in your second paragraph especially as you are using the present tense to signify you are talking about the current situation (clue...try immediately before Ireland).

    Pedantic? Moi?

Next week, Phil and I will be discussing Korea which is Koreal if you're from Bemmy.

I vaguely recall in the halcyon days of football chat on the internet (like about 25 years ago), there was a City fan I spoke with on one message board who called himself Colin Moulding. Would that have been you?

Fraid not squire.  I used to go on the City List a lot but I can't even remember what my 'handle' was. Blimey, I sound so CB Radios in motion!

Or...... The Mayor Of Simpleton (SL)

BTW  Dave Mattacks on drums ?

Yep. He was on the whole album (Nonsuch) produced by Elton John's old producer.

XTC is my Bristol City music wise. Bought all their albums, singles and more. Travelled to see them outside of Bristol and like the City, never made it to the Premier League of venues and TV.

I could give more similarities but I'd end up being 'Disappointed.'

What a track this is and if Andy is reading this...the reason it was never a massive hit was because of the drum rhythm Dave had to play (listen to the demo version by Andy. It's the same). At the end, Dave plays the standard rhythm most drummers would play. The song suddenly comes alive. You want to dance to it.  Just like City, so much promise but....and I'm annoyed!

XTC and Bristol City. That's me!

45 minutes of quality from start to finish.

Just umming and arring if I should buy Steve Hackett's live version in 5.1 (Bluray). All the other Genesis revisited versions are great. Firth of Forth is still incredible (ok different album).

If you listen to his latest version (Seconds Out Revisited) and then check out YouTube footage of Genesis's last ever gig(s), you'd think you were watching a B rated tribute band. Boy, can Steve H still play the guitar!

As someone who has never seen them I concur , ASAP please Andy

That's got to do it, 1960man!

I only found out recently that their last UK gig was at the Top Rank in Cardiff.

We went by train. Big mistake! We had to leave half way through their set to catch the last train home.

They hadn't released English Settlement but were trying out certain tracks which were Snowman and 2 others (can't remember now).

I remember hearing staff chatting at the Beat gig saying they were over capacity, the figure I've got in my head was 2,300. It was over 40 years ago mind.

    Bristol Post article says 2,000

Today it is best known as the O2 Academy, but the venue was originally part of Mecca Leisure Group's New Entertainments Centre and was an ABC Cinema.

Opening in 1966, it included a dozen licensed bars, an ice rink, bowling lanes, the Craywood Club casino, a night club, a grand cinema and the 2,000-capacity Locarno ballroom with an illuminated ceiling.

    Yes, I read that.

I have it stuck in my brain cells asking the ticket girl at Virgin Records what the capacity was and hearing 1200 as her response. Maybe before elfnsafety the ballroom was 2000 but dropped big time in the 80s when fire risks became a top priority.

    I'd go to see these

Terry Chambers had been on tour with his ExTC band.

What a great version of Mayor this is.

For a minute I thought Andy P was on acoustic!

PS if Andy is reading this.... please forget the issues and past. Just reform even for a night or two ...and let us know first!  Thank you.

Colonel Kilgore's Vietnamese Formation Surf Team at the Locarno. Local band , no label , sells out Bristols biggest venue.

The Locarno was Bristol's biggest venue?

I thought that held 1200 maximum. Colsunall was 1800ish and Hippodrome nearly 2000.

15 mins later.... just did some Googling. A couple of sites state 2000 including a U2 version which said 2500! No definitive answer though, mind you what is the definitive answer here?

Interesting that you didn't rate U2 at the Locarno, October Tour. For me it was a great gig and I remember being really stunned by Bono's amazing voice. At the time, they were still doing pretty credible Clash-inspired post-punk rock and John Peel was regularly playing their stuff.

Of course, a couple of years on they sadly descended into their awful stadium rock phase, and lost me forever ☹️

    Hi CR.

My extreme annoyance at this gig was because including encore, they were on stage for 45 minutes. I was so annoyed that the following day I returned my unopened, shrink-wrapped October album to Strawberry Fayre in Broadmead. They let me exchange it for Squeeze East Side Story. What an album that is.

Anyway, I was offered a ticket for the War tour. Now that was a gig! Bono climbing up to the balcony courtesy of the stage based PA stack and what an album to promote!

Incidentally, I know I saw the Comsat Angels as a support band at the Locarno. Were they the support for the October tour?

  12. Live Aid (Wembley - Bowie was far, far better than Queen, and I wasn't a great fan of either)

    Bo Diddley -Bierkeller

    XTC - Locarno

ZZ Top Birmingham Odeon (Eliminator tour)

Worst gig U2 - Locarno (October tour)

Best gig U2 - Colston Hall (War tour)

Peter Gabriel - Hatfield Poly 1977. (His warm up gig to his first UK appearance since leaving that other band. Only 200 there).

Loads of Dr Feelgood and Thunder gigs.

Dave Edmunds warm up gig at Reading Uni. Featuring in his band Steve Cropper, Graham Parker, Dion (another 200 there)

Like others have said, loads of other gigs. Bristol in late 70s onwards was great for gigs. Never made it to The Thekla though.

    EDIT........just remembered, Hednesford Town !

I was there too. They served Beamish Red in the bar at half time. Ivan Testimanu was sitting in front of us reading a Rusdian newspaper.
