    error!

It was a joke already in this thread!  I didn't notice until I'd  typed it out................

Having heard it after a bowls match ( the captains sometimes  tell a joke ) I didn't expect to see on here so I edited it.

It was the one about the Italian virgin.

Yes. I couldn`t stop laughing earlier when Don Topley said on the radio he should be on the plane to Australia. A Somerset player picked for England? Never in a million years old boy - he`s the wrong sort dontcha know.

Now, if he played for Middlesex that would be a different matter altogether............

Sad but true......Tres and Caddick were the last to play for England I think.

That one reason Buttler left Somerset.

He was up against quality today that I doubt he's experienced before.

He let his player in twice ( even a game hardened pro would not necessarily done better )

He kept his head up , kept going and was rewarded with an away win bonus and part of a defence that kept a clean sheet .

    Well done Zak .

Well done LJ for playing him .

Indeed it was. LJ could have played Smith at RB but had faith in Vyner to step up. More first team experience for Zak. I'll bet he's the envy of the younger players....

I will watch and enjoy cricket until the day I die, but I genuinely think that WIndies performance to beat us will be the oddest loss ever... No idea where it came from, they are awful

Several of the Windies stars were missing, Gayle and Bravo to name just two. Both have become T20 specialists and are returning for the one T20 game at Durham............

The remains Windies players are improving as the win at Trent Bridge showed but there is lots of unrest within the Windies set up largely because some Windies players feel they're not paid what they think they're worth. Hence several Windies players go where the money is - T20.

My issue being that it is all the time our top order fails. If Broad and Anderson had made 100 between them then you could understand. But they didn't. They made 46 and our top order made 40...an average of 8.

England's top order has been fragile for ages. Finding an opener to partner Cook has been a 'mare. The only other world class batsman is Root who likes to come in at 4 so positions 2 and 3 are where the weaknesses are. But.....England do bat way down the order which kinda compensates for the fragile top order.

Bairstow and Stokes are capable in the middle order with Moeen after them. Not a bad line up.

You could also add that the ball wasn't new either. But the fact still remains that five men, two of whom are among the worlds elite, who's job it is to bat, failed to score as many as the two worst batsmen on the team. Conditions or no conditions, indefensible.

I can't agree with you there WttJ. Your comments are very harsh imv.

All top batsmen fail at times and yesterday the conditions were ideal for bowling. Both teams struggled to cope with the swinging ball.

Been working from home today, so the TV has been on in the background

If Anderson could have held onto a few catches we'd have been batting a long time ago - but what a display by Stokes !

Superb from Stokes a sixfer!  3 of them bowled and one caught and bowled. Almost a one man team this innings.

The evidence is England batted poorly in their first innings, had not bowled that well for West Indies first innings and then had managed to extricate themselves from an even more embarrassing result in their 2nd innings. He declared with 6 overs left on day 4 and West Indies won with 5 overs remaining.

I believe that having been given an unlikely reprise the order of the day was safety first and ensure at least that the West Indies could not win the 3 match series, something that is now a possibility.

For me it gives more creedence to the argument that England don't take 5 day test matches seriously.

We'll have to agree to disagree EMB.

As for five day tests - ask any test playing cricketer which is the toughest test they face in their professional career and to a man they'll tell you test cricket is the daddy.

Its cricket at it purist and finest.

Root pushed his luck going for a win in a game that they never deserved to win, he should have batted on and made the game safe, it was a piss poor call.

Root wants England to play positive cricket by encouraging a positive mindset in his team.

Sure, he could of batted on but with only two wickets left he decided to try and knock off one or two Windies wickets that evening. Unfortunately neither Broad or Anderson could make the breakthrough.

Had he batted on and the two remaining wickets had fallen in the next couple of overs (always a possibility) we would not be discussing  this now.

I wouldn't say so, more often than not you'd back England in the position they started today just the bowling and fielding really wasn't up to standard. Particularly the test wasn't 'lost' in that England could have batted on till they were all out and killed the test taking a 1-0 lead into the final test ensuring we couldn't lose the series.

When the declaration was made the Windies were demoralised having seen their first inns lead overtaken by such a large margin. With just a few overs left in the days play the last thing the two openers would wanted was to face the new ball.

Unfortunately for England they both survived the attack from Broad and Anderson. Had just one wicket fell we might have seen a different result yesterday.

No way was Root at fault foe declaring when he did,

Declaration was the right call, England just didn't perform well enough

    Absolutely the right call.

The test was lost when England failed to reach 300+ in the first innings.

  12. Windies were obviously badly shaken by their humiliation at Edgebaston and have upped their game tremendously.

They bowled well and their fielding was  significantly better.

Today I was delighted to see England overcome the deficit with just 3 down and if they can get a decent lead of around 200/250 the last day will be fascinating to see both teams battling it out on a deteriorating wicket.
