In the FBC Podcast yesterday I mentioned that prior to last weekend, we may well have been waiting for a big sale to formulate our transfer strategy for the window.

I know that NP wanted to do his business early, and was considering loans at last (after 2 years), but any large sale would hopefully have given him some additional funds to get in either permanently or on loan experienced heads (who cost considerably more of course) needed for the relegation battle ahead rather than potential PL under 21s loans.

That position may have changed of course after the Swansea game. Of course we don't know how bad the injuries to Weimann and Conway are. But at the final whistle, from my seat in the Lansdown you could also see Naismith hobbling badly onto the pitch holding his right calf (whether this influenced his substitution is a possibility).

You then look at the squad as a whole, with potentially Martin, Massengo & Klose obviously persona non grata; Kalas still not match ready; we are into the under 21s. There is no further squad depth from my perspective. The subs bench for the weekend will already be stocked full of the Under 21s.

With the two key home games coming up, we need to make some decisions quickly. Any sale of Scott/Semenyeo could be long and protracted, and it's unlikely that any move would not be until the end of the window. That's not going to help us in the next 3 weeks of course, where without reinforcements we could well be falling into the bottom three.

From my perspective we need to be proactive, rather than reactive now based on sales. Yes it's taking a chance (Birmingham anyone) that you are in fact going to make that big sell. But we can't afford to just be standing by, with a mounting injury list, and numerous players not even being considered for whatever reason.

Interesting few weeks ahead for sure.

I think it comes down to this. SL wants to sell. If we go down the potential value reduction is far greater than the cost of a couple of new faces. So yes I think his hand will be forced. Lets hope it is and we don't get anymore of NP's old mates looking for a pre pension position.

What is incredible is Semenyo getting MOM for a shite header that a Toolstation Division 1 keeper would have been disappointed to get beat with.

Semenyo should be ashamed of himself. Wells gave 100% after coming on both in attack and winning the ball back. Antoine seems to have read in the papers that he is very good. Either he is not fit or his head is in the wrong place. He barely got past a jog and his idea of closing down is pathetic. Boys needs to watch the video and compare his performance with that of Wells.

Most definitely, but like with all things now, as long as the finances make sense. & that probably means a fair % drop for Jay, maybe on a longer term? He won’t struggle to find a club if he leaves, that’s for sure! COYR

Not so sure about him finding a new club as he gets targeted by juts about every team we play.

We have a history of turning excellent loans into terrible permanent signings, Tomlin being the obvious example. Whilst I wouldn’t put Jay into that category I do not think he has met expectations since signing on a perm.

With him apparently being offered a new contract, all be it a lower wage, do people think offering him a new contract is the right thing to do? For me, I would release and look for a young hungry aggressive lower league left back to offer competition to Pring.

When COD was released NP said that sometimes a player needs to move on for both them and the club, I thought Jay would be in the same boat, it doesn’t seem to be the case.

    What are peoples thoughts?

Very simple. No. He can't beat his man, can't cross and is a liability in the air. Much better value available for far less salary

Being honest our home fans are awful when it comes to trying to lift the team . People always say we need good football to create an atmosphere but anyone who was at that Leeds game when we were 2 goals up will tell you that atmosphere can definitely change the result of a game .

Going to many grounds over the years the flatness in atmosphere from home fans  always seem to be at grounds like Ashton gate and reading where home fans creating an atmosphere are in a tiny little section. Grounds with home fans stood behind a goal for example elland road and as much as I hate to say it Cardiff makes it a lot easier for people to get encouraged to make an atmosphere.

More interested in making up clever little songs that nobody knows and so can't join in or skipping out early to be at the front of the beer queue at half time

At Coventry on Sunday their fans sang a lot of simple and well known songs and guess what other parts of the ground joined in.

Football songs do not need to be original or win the Eurovision song contest, they need to be simple and loud. What's wrong with the players name with a bit of clapping in between?

Within the games at home you can feel the tension or groans for a misplaced pass, players must be worrying about making a mistake which becomes a self fulfilling prophecy.

Its often an argument do the players have to perform to get the fans something to cheer about and create the atmosphere or should the fans get the ground buzzing which inspires the players?

Must agree that we are masters of our own doom at times with the negativity about the place

We are essentially a team that plays on the break. Away for home where teams are more attacking to please fans this works quite well.

At home both teams are effectively often trying to play on the break. Our fans get restless, some of our team get more adventurous, some stick to the plan and we have a huge gap in midfield. Then come the goals.

  7. I was scanning the league tables after the Stoke game and got a horrible feeling in my stomach.

Considering our current form, upcoming fixtures, very low chances of improving the squad in January it seems a relegation fight is almost inevitable.

At the same time looking at the league 1 stats the Gas Heads must be very optimistic. They are winning ugly and finding a way to accumulate points at an alarming rate.

If he didn't come with so much baggage I think Barton would have been offered a better job long ago. After the traditional slow start he seems to get a tune out of a bunch of no names.

The thought of passing each other has not been on the cards for years but just at the moment I cannot quite get the thought out of my head. I wonder what the odds are?

I still don’t get the lack of confidence in Pearson to spend any money when he’s not had any to spend so far across three windows (this one about to be the 4th)…Atkinson aside.  How do you reach that opinion?

Based on free transfers?  Some of which are lower league players at that or aging OOC players outside of the windows?

He’s not really had much chance to prove one way or the other.  That’s the reality.  Before I get Atkinson thrown back at me…the criticism yesterday also contained three words “at the moment”, so he hasn’t written him off.

No team in the champ recruited less players than us in the summer!

The usual suspects of teams that recruit well all spent more than us not just this summer but last summer too (Luton, Millwall, Preston, Coventry, etc).  Most of them did in the summer of 2021 also.  Our finances have completely hamstrung us for three summers!

If he does generate some usable transfer funds from whatever avenue, then I think he gets deserves the opportunity to spend some if it himself.  We will see Tinnion’s recruitment come under scrutiny now.  He’s now fronting this up.  The clarity of the recruitment accountability hasn’t been there in the past, and led to it being the blame of one or more people (without going over old ground).  It’s now Tinnion’s cock on the block.  Maybe it’s the set up we needed, I hope so.

I just think that it is never good when a player gets thrown under the bus. Consider Pring, why did he have to be on the naughty step for months when DaSilva has hardly beat his man all season.

I wonder if King will on the naughty step now? No because he is one of the favourites and is allowed to make mistakes that are not tolerated in others.

To me it feels like a toxic environment with a scapegoat mentality. Bottom line is, we are worse off than this time last year. Our problems are largely the same as last year and that has to go down to management.

I’m not sure if Adam has missed Nige’s dozens of other interviews, especially after a defeat but that was just standard Nige, no ruder than any other as far as I can see.

Personally I was frustrated how Atkinson got drawn into the interview and we’re left with half a story which I feel Nige shouldn’t have said but as he did say it then Durden failed in his job to follow it up.

One constant thread. Its never his fault

I believe it has its origins in engineering. If a machine was built in a basic, functional and no frills way it was described as agricultural because at that time most framing machinery was like that. Since then, it has morphed into sport etc describing anything which is not elegant

Speaking ahead of Saturday's game at Ashton Gate, Pearson said: "Managers don't go forever on a run of bad results. I'm aware that this is going to be an important game because otherwise, people might start wondering about what my position is.

"I've invested too much time and energy in this job to allow players, who I don't really trust that much at the minute, to play and that's how I will be approaching the game. I will be blunt, you didn't ask the question directly but you're right to ask it and very kind not to ask it in a blunt way but the bottom line is we need a result this week. Simple as that.

"But, we have invested too much in the strategy that we're adopting to ignore the work we have put in. It's been a difficult 18 months in terms of trying to reshape it. Unfortunately, we know we need to make adjustments to the squad but we don't know if we can do it at this time and that's the big problem for us."

When asked if he needs a result in regards to his position as manager, Pearson added: "Maybe, I can't answer that but I don't worry about that anyway.

"But no. It's about finishing this part of the season positively. We've dropped down to 20th which is not great but it's ridiculously tight. We continue to throw points away that we shouldn't which means we find ourselves dropping down the table when our aspirations are a lot higher than that. Managers ultimately carry the can but there's a lot more to it than that."

On the return from the initial international break at the beginning of October 1, Pearson set a target for his side to remain in and around the top six after a really positive start to the season. That obviously hasn't transpired with City three points above the relegation zone.

    --------------------

Two clear points, one: we are treated with the players he can trust line, where have we heard that before?

Two: He set a target for the club in October to be around the top 6. Yet we are in the bottom five. Pearson has admitted there in a nutshell, we are under performing. The fans say we are where we should be given everything going on, but was Pearson deluded then to say we should be around the top 6. If he believed that this team could be around the Top 6, you have to question why we are where we are, when the manager clearly felt this group of players can compete, when the Pro Pearson fans have basically said it's not his fault and the players are no good.

He goes on to say "We need to have a look and feel of a team and not isolate people."

This is a huge contradiction, given he has just said he will play the players he can trust ! Basically saying there will be players pushed out the team. That is exactly how you isolate people !!!!!

Is it never even a little bit his fault or is he perfect. Worst man management style I have seen in ages. All of this sort of talk should stay in the dressing room.

Hold on. This is drifting off topic. It’s not meant to be about Nige. It’s all about the Lansdowns.

You remember them. They who can’t do a thing wrong. They who dig deep and put their own funds in. All out of an altruistic value.

Or they who’ve invested big time in an asset. A cash cow. They who’ve deliberately identified an under performing asset and who now own - lock, stock and barrel - some very valuable freeholds in BS3.

Ashton Vale anyone? How many acres did Steve ride his Trojan Horse into there?

Might seem extreme and provocative - and it is and it’s meant to be - but I don’t buy the vision. I don’t see it.

How can anyone be so successful in part of their life and make, what seems  to be, an almighty **** up in another.

Seems to me that in some peoples opinion the worse thing you can do in life is to be successful. Yes he has heaps of money but as a young man he took loads of risks and worked hours that many would never even know existed. What he now choses to do with his money is his choice. Would you prefer owners like Birmingham or Hull have? It seems to me that some former players who had it all but chose to be more committed to Thatchers than football are somehow more respected. Do I detect a hint of reverse snobery, or not one of the people c**p

    Well, well, well.

Here we are again. Wasn’t long ago that Korey smacked it home, we were deliriously delighted and Bobby scored from the spot.

Now we’re ****** over by the boys in Lincoln green. The call goes out. Nige is a clown. He has to go.

But all’s well in Planet Lansdown. The Messiah has deep pockets. We shall be grateful. We have a lovely stadium - I’ll grant ‘ee Steve - The Killers were superb.

He’s got his medal - services to sport? His home city? Making us proud?

He’s had to contend with Covid. And all that brought with it. Was there an opportunity to offer up AG for immunisation jabs? Did he do so out of the goodness of his heart? Anyone know?

He’s had to endure the issues around FFP. And for a professional investor he’s done that very well…. He let Ashton in and **** us over. He let Junior take up the reins and **** it up.

And now we have good old Tinman in a new role…. Who remembers the sorry state of Swansea affairs when “the legend” sat in the dug out as the lights were turned off?

Job for the boys? Don’t challenge me. Go now Nige. Go now. Self preservation. Like Mr Coppell…..

But it’s ok. We are grateful. Steve is doing a great job. For Steve and his merry, proud gang…..

Am I grateful? Am I bollocks. The only one who’s done well out of this debacle whilst Capn Steve has had his hands on the udders of the cash cow in BS3 is the Messiah himself.

    Freeholds in Ashton Vale anyone?

Like that post Dave, wasnt that similar around transition discussions held towards the end of last season.

Cm dropping back to cb and then being a wtaf zone.  Leaving gaps.

I'm presuming someone was meant to be somewhere in that transition, but either, forgot, got dragged, lost concentration or was told different from sidelines.

    What do you think??

I think Antoine plays on instinct and is not the most football intelligent player. This makes him very hard to coach to a system. When Conway or Wiemann close down you can see they are checking the angles and calling others into the gaps

Yes a good assessment. The kids will develop they just need more time maybe loan experience. But I agree on the finished three. Is not king moving into coaching at city. So why the need to play him tonight. And if as it would appear Martin, Klose finished. Do they not need moving on in Jan. And replacements found. Again reference FFP and no transfer pot. Worrying I feel and with TK unable to stay fit might he need replacing as well. I do feel we need a active Jan transfer window. The problems of a small squad and injuries .I am starting to get a little squeaky bum time about relegation . But will be there Saturday against Watford

Do you really think anyone would want Martin or Klose even if we paid half of their wages

  18. 1 hour ago, BCFCGav said:

I was hoping to see a 'big' outgoing in the summer to give us financial wiggle room, and wonder if January is the time to finally do it. Obviously, losing our best players is frustrating but this squad needs bolstering. I'm weighing up what's more valuable, keeping the Scott/Semenyo or utilising money from a sale to give us squad depth and maybe an important defensive player.

I understand we seem likely to remain within FFP which is really great news. This is definitely an argument for trying to keep the top talent at the club, as we don't need to sell to swerve a potentially devastating points deduction. But even with this factored in, is making a sale still in the clubs best interest? Could we cash in on Antoine if he excels in Qatar? Do we really bite the bullet and listen to Scott offers? As things are at the moment, could we afford to sack Nige even if we wanted to?

Just trying to gauge peoples opinions, really interested to hear poeples' takes.

For me Antoine typifies us at the moment. In the rare game he is unplayable other than that he can't shoot on target, cannot retain the ball with his back to goal and gives away a free kick just about each time he tries to close down. I think at this stage of his career he desperately needs a mentor to bring out his best and we don't have one. At todays prices if we got an offer of £3 million I would accept immediately

I have to say the situation that Joey Barton took over in Gasland was far worse than NP had. I am absolutely no gas fan but he seems to be getting a tune out of a pretty poor bunch including youngsters.

Seen people saying on here that the ‘players aren’t playing for him’.  Pretty much the same thing!

There must be something wrong to see such a swing in performances from 1 week to the next.

The latest strange Nig line ups like at Boro feels a bit like LJ towards the end. Shuffling the pack without any clear logic and hoping for the best. I hate it when NP talks about "they" so much like he and they are not in the same boat. I guess worst case for him is, we drop into bottom 3, he gets sacked with a nice top up to his pension fund. Clearly we have no money to improve the team so we have to coach them individually and as a team to grind out results. It seems to me that the kids tutored by Tins have far more idea of what they are doing then the older heads coached by NP and his team.

I wonder what he seeks to achieve by week after week saying "just not good enough" aimed at the players. Surely his selection at Boro was not good enough because if they had any luck they would have hammered us. The team last night was not good enough and it appeared that they had been given no plan to work to. Fine when a player has an off day BUT when the whole team looks like a bunch of strangers it has to go down to the coaching staff. Some lessons learned I think.

    a) Forget Martin he is slow beyond believe and we play Warnock ball when he is on the field.

    b) Understand that our squad is thin and if we want to win any match we have to play our best team. If we wanted out of this cup why not play the entire 21's because at least they would play as a team. and would not risk players needed to avoid relegation.

    c) Accept that we are in a relegation battle. Pick your best 11 and play them whenever they are fit

Finally NP accept that if the team plays poorly you are as much to blame as they are. You plan the tactics, you pick the team, you decide what is done in training and you are responsible for motivation and player coaching. Stop looking smug at each interview and get up for the fight as a part of the team not as an outside observer.

I don't want this to turn into a slagging match, as maybe I just need to be educated. This is how I view it. He has 1 good game in every 10. He doesn't score goals, he doesn't assist. He doesn't want to be here and is refusing to sign a contract. Granted, he runs around a lot, but he also constantly loses his man. I just don't get him as a player and why the fans love him.

If his name was Paul Smith, had a short back and sides haircut, and we'd signed him from Doncaster, the fans would be screaming blue murder.

@DavefevsHave you got any stats on him and how he ranks against other midfielders in the league? I'd bet bottom dollar that even Bakinson has better stats for City.
