Think France may well be Southgate’s defining moment.

Might be harsh, but there will be those who say still the run to the SF last time we did not face any real giants, and lost three matches against the better sides. Foden and Bellingham make us a better side than then.

For half a century we have not beaten a team that has won the World Cup away from Wembley in a knock out round. We have made later rounds, we have got close losing from time to time on penalties.

Beat France and many of those demons are put to bed. Lose a QF again against one of the real contenders, well, been there before.

Southgate’s Waterloo. Hopefully the same result.

We beat Germany in the euros though. How many defining moments does he need?

    Absolutely.

5 straight wins for them in BS3 & aside from the hammering we gave them up there in the pandemic season in Karanka’s very last game & Famara’s winner in a 1-0, our record up there is pretty dreadful, too.

Definitely the side we struggle against.

All of that set in the context of them consistently finishing lower than us as well, barring the pandemic season!

While I take your point that kids sport being cancelled seems OTT, does all kids sport these days have to be organised?

Is there anything to stop them getting the vital socialisation and interaction you speak of by going down the park with their pals for a kickabout like I used to just about every day in the school holidays?

Another way of looking at it is a short pause in their normal routine gives them an opportunity to take in and at least begin to understand the enormity of the current events in their country - the death of the Queen is an historic landmark event they will remember for the rest of their lives - which could be argued is a good thing.

As they watch events unfold, culminating in the Queen's state funeral, they'll be absorbed in momentous scenes they'll no doubt remember in the same way I still remember Churchill's state funeral (just about) and the moon landings in my own Primary School days, and, inbetween, there's nothing to stop them meeting up with their friends to play football or anything else.

Having been annoyed for the last 24 hours as a result of the postponement, this is an interesting perspective which I hadn’t considered. Thanks

  4. He must have known he was having his first child when he signed the deal though, so are we saying that he thought it would be doable when he signed on for another year but the reality of his new fatherhood had forced him to reassess his position?
