I remember the 70s and the 1st division days, I also remember the old 2nd division days where had ups and downs and many seasons of do we think we will stay up or down.

You have your right of opinion but for me better now a bit hit and miss in the Championship and the fans having chance to cherish the odd win and stay up than see us go down and winning more in league 1 the following season.

Me as a City supporter from the day I was born and almost 60 years old soon the higher division for me we are in is the best.

Those that rather see more wins in a lower league then my suggestion is go and support another club

If it wasn't for the points deductions I'd wager on us getting relegated. We'd only be 5 points clear and I think Pearson would be close to getting the bullet. With the points deductions we are as good as safe

Yes as good as safe. Another extra 4 points will make it comfortable. I find it hard to believe as at the beginning of the season our expectations were much higher all round.

  3. Great key questions. progress has been very slowly and very inconsistent. Patience will still be with the fan base if only we win the last four home games. The away ones left will be very hard.

There is not many potential points left this season. Unfortunately Nige may crack it and not for the reasons you made but out of frustration and sadly pull the pin.

    Why is that strange?

    This raises 2 questions,

    1. Have you ever seen so many question marks against someones career record?

    2. How bad do you have to be to be a cult figure from only 10 games?

Average defender only in any ones books.

Great post Jersey bean. Except the below. What beach ?

Birmingham is the most landlocked city in the UK. It is about 120 miles from the nearest beach at Weston-super-Mare. There is no beach. It will be tough one today and most probably a draw for us at best.

More than 50 beachgoers had to be rescued when they got trapped in sinking mud as crowds flocked to the coast at the weekend.

Avon Fire and Rescue saved 30 people at Weston-super-Mare beach at about 17:00 BST on Saturday and rescued a further 23 people on Sunday at 18:50.

Station manager Shaun Heighton said the very high tide at Weston beach meant it left a dangerous mud residue behind.

The coastguard is asking people to take note of warning signs in place.

This is the first of just four games this month (with Blackburn, Barnsley and WBA up next) and there will be a decent 20,000 + crowd. After today we have just three more home games this season, Peterborough United, Sheffield United and Hull City.

Back in November they beat us 3-0, highlights here:

Our head-to-head record is poor we have won 18, drawn 17 and lost 35. Last season they finished 18th and their anxious fans posted an open letter to the players last February (see picture). They are currently in 19th place on 37 points.

There will be a minutes applause today on 62 minutes for ex-Bristol City apprentice (1976/77) Peter Hayes who sadly passed away on 24th January.

There is also a book signing today https://www.bcfc.co.uk/news/meet-club-legend-merrick-at-book-signing/ when Geoff Merrick will be signing his autobiography ‘Life with the Robins and  beyond.’

Our squad is likely to include O’Leary, Kalas, James and Atkinson, so NP will have a few decisions to make. Pre-match NP said ‘I think it's always about us trying to lift the fans, they've played their part hugely this season and what we're trying to do is create a side here which gives people a bit of hope not just for this season but beyond.’

Last Saturday, for one weekend only, Birmingham City reverted to their original name - Small Heath Alliance - after accepting an order from the TV series Peaky Blinders: https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/peaky-blinders-bbc-birmingham-city-23220355

They lost 2-0 at home to Huddersfield last time our when Lyle Taylor was injured during the warm up and Maxime Colin was also forced off in the first half. Their strike duo Troy Deeney and Scott Hogan are both ruled out with calf injuries. They are hoping to have Marc Roberts available today.

Birmingham fans again protested at their owners last Saturday by throwing tennis balls onto the pitch, causing a delay,  They have won just once in eight matches, and against the Terriers failed to find the net for the first time in 13 league games.

Fans comments after the Huddersfield game:

Only one player looked like making a difference today and that was Onel. Schoolboy defending which can only be expected from midfielders playing out of position - we need to get to the bottom of this injury crisis.

Next season we'll rebuild. Then finish 19th and claim that the season after will be the rebuild, and the dross will continue for another 10 years. Can't defend. Embarrassing (self-inflicted) injury record. Deserve to be relegated this season, farcical that we will survive again.

Taylor gets injured, Bacuna has a poor game, and we're rubbish. Shame we're so reliant on everyone being 100% all the time.

Decision not to sign any defenders is killing any chance of progress this season.

They are managed by Lee Bowyer. As a player, he was a midfielder who featured for Charlton Athletic, Leeds United, West Ham United (two spells), Newcastle United, Birmingham City and Ipswich Town in over 18 years as a professional. He made 397 appearances in the Premier League, took part in semi-finals of the UEFA Cup and UEFA Champions League with Leeds and won the Football League Cup with Birmingham in 2011. Bowyer was capped once by the England national team.

His record against us is played 3 won 2 and lost 1.

He’s got a bit of an unpleasant reputation; he fought with Kieron Dyer, his Newcastle team-mate, allegedly because Dyer didn’t pass to him, Emma Keeney, who he was dating back in 1995, reported that he slapped her, spat in her face and when he chucked her said ‘I can't risk it, we might have a brown baby’. Bowyer allegedly also went on the rampage at a McDonald's restaurant on the Isle of Dogs in 1996 and hurled racist abuse at the Bangladeshi staff before knocking a cook unconscious.

Bowyer was manager of Charlton Athletic for three years, before he left to become the Birmingham City manager in 2021.

Players that have played for both clubs in (relatively) recent times include, Duncan Idehen, David Cotterill, Wade Elliott, David Rennie and Mick Harford.

Today’s officials: Referee: Thomas Bramall. Assistant Referee: Bhupinder Gill. Assistant Referee: Robert Merchant. Fourth Official: John Busby.

Why?. It is Putin that is the issue and not the majority of Russians or there football clubs. My opinion is if the Russian football teams are willing to travel then lets play.

Why should the world wide greatest sport be a pawn in a chess game with an idiot like Putin.

A lot has changed since 26/02. As you can appreciate the post was before the escalation of events over the last week or so. Sport with Russia is now a forgone conclusion that it is not going to occur in any disciplines of sport let alone football.

The suffering Putin has caused is totally not acceptable

    A strange question Oz……………..:cool2:

Under the current circumstances Nige continues to have experienced players missing so remains unable to select his strongest team.

Not sure though if Nige knows him self what the real team should be if all players fit. He has tried many combinations but the inconsistency seems to be more of a word lately being splashed around rather than performing. There seems that some players do not to have the commitment that they should week in and week out. Not sure if that is because of injuries or something else going on behind the curtain we are not aware of.

The team over all did try hard at Forest but at the end of the day we were second fiddle to a Forest team that are playing OK but not top six potential.

Could really screw up the Qatar World Cup. You never know, teams might boycott it if any sort of Russian presence allowed. A fitting end to a tournament that should never have been staged there.

Although Putin removed, Russia withdraws from Ukraine, normal service resumed, would be a much better option.

I do feel for the Russian players though. I agree on Putin withdrawing but I do not think that will happen any time soon

I’ve always gone to AG to be entertained but as we all know that doesn’t always happen regardless of who the manager is.

Some managers like Jordan, Ward and DW liked to play attacking front foot football whereas SoD and both Johnson’s served the dullest football I’ve ever seen at AG.

I believe that when Nige has a fully squad to select from that we’ll see some entertaining stuff once again.

What is a full squad to pick from under this current climate. If you know the answer please tell

    Of course it is.

the rest of this post (waffle?) is a general set of comments, not aimed at anyone.

I’m pro-Nige, but he’s made mistakes.  You’d have to be a bit bonkers to not see any faults though.  Some of those mistakes are likely to be shown-up because of many reasons…call them excuses if you like

My position is that I can see beyond faults, I look at other things too, not just results and performances.  I do think the “club” would be worse off at this stage without him guiding us through.

I set what I think was a reasonable expectation level at the start of the season.

Whilst letting 10+ players go, several fans were saying we needed 10-12 new signings.  The reality is that they were probably right.  The problem was that we couldn’t afford 10-12 new signings (and I’m not talking Baker or Weimann re-signings either).  It’s why when I wrote for the Bristol Post pre-season that I thought we’d make 4 or 5 signings and striker would be the lowest priority.  If you have a reasonable understanding of the financial position you realise Nige’s hands are tied.  And that drove my expectation level, middle-eight, but likely to be bottom end of it.  Which is where we are.

This is what I wrote in part of that piece:

If you were in charge of Bristol City’s recruitment this summer, where would you be strengthening and why?

I’d start at the back and in particular the spine.  Assuming Danny Simpson signs his contract, I’d move Zak Vyner to right-back and let him and Simpson cover that slot.  That’s one less position to recruit, leaving the focus on Centre-Back.  Currently we are left with Tomas Kalas and Taylor Moore, backed up by the ever-improving Robbie Cundy.  He can force his way into first-team plans with a good pre-season, but I want two new central defenders, one of which must be dominant in the air.  More on that later!

From there I move into central midfield, where although City have Joe Williams, Tyreeq Bakinson, Han-Noah Massengo and Adam Nagy in the more conventional midfield roles, I would like one more. That one would ideally be more in the mould of Williams, and you can see why Matty James has been mentioned in dispatches.  I’d be all over Keirnan Dewsbury-Hall though, surely Pearson can use his Leicester connections, and will already know “KDH”.

As strikers are usually the most costly and the good ones are courted by clubs further up the pecking order, I will be content to go into the season with Wells and Martin, backed up by a couple of the young-guns.  Take your pick of two from four (Conway, who I really rate, Britton, Bell and Janneh).  Not forgetting Antoine Semenyo, who if we play 4231 is naturally suited to play in one of the wide positions in the attacking midfield three.  If we go 433, then he is suited to the wide forward role.  If Andi Weimann accepts our contract offer, I think we have enough.

That leaves me one more position to fill, and that’s either a left back, or a left midfielder, preferably one who can do both.  Cam Pring or George Nurse might save me having to cover left back (behind Jay Dasilva) if they can push themselves forward early in pre-season.  But I’d like some competition for Callum O’Dowda.  Someone like Marvin Johnson, recently released by Middlesbrough would fit the bill.

I see posts on here and twitter saying things like “what excuse did the messiah come up with today” or “careful, don’t criticise Nige”, yet I’m not sure where those comments come from.  Come and debate / discuss it, trying to influence a change of opinion is fine, but also be prepared to get the opposite back in response.

I just find it easier to not get too high after a win (or good performance) or too low after a defeat (or poor performance).

Your post brings things down to earth. Thank you Dave

Agreed, it wasn't a clear and obvious error so should not have been overturned, the match of the day team were totally in the wrong in the way they castigated the officials and it showed they didn't know the rule.

My problem with VAR is that the "clear and obvious" part of it's existence is so rarely applied.

From the posts and down loaded evidence this is not a deliberate hand ball to me any way. I agree with Port.
