Oh there must be loads, promotions are quite rare and there are a lot of clubs who don't really expect more than survival season on season.

Gary Rowett sprang to mind, but not sure if he went up with Burton. Couldn't see it when I had a quick look on wiki.

As an aside what do people think of the coverage of SSN? I'm finding it very professional but lacking the matey humour of past seasons.

Is it me or is there a weird hue to the display? Maybe it's just a lighting thing. And I agree with who said about the vidiprinter, but it's slightly off.

Overall it's fine - I think it was a mistake to make the seats further away from eachother though. Obviously never going to replace Jeff, but I don't mind most of the people on and I'm one of a few on here who finds Clinton quite amusing.

I felt some of the initial critical comments about our kits were over the top, but I generally don't care as I wouldn't buy one anyway. Some other clubs fans made positive comments about the third shirt on another forum I frequent - unfortunately they aren't the target market for Bristol City and they don't really care about the badge.

Going retro has been in vogue for quite a while now with football kits, but even outside of that with the young ones. Maybe it's running it's course now.

Got to say that jacket is definitely taking the piss!  the bucket hats too are really off. Not for me anyway, but i can see the idea that was somehow executed poorly. The random Bristol City on the back makes it look worse.

Seems it not just us that are confused about our identity as Aston Villa are going ahead with two crests this season much to their fans bemusement. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/aston-villa-explain-club-crest-27172830.amp

The splat Robin kind of worked on the back of the Grey Hummel t-shirt, but it's bizarre they would push it so heavily with little communication and so soon after our other badge change. They are obviously trying to work out how to approach it, or just plan to ignore it and quietly drop it.

It's clear Hummel were very good at getting the base ideas into clear marketable clothing. Those jackets a couple of years back were really nice for example. I don't think it matters who the brand are as long as they do a decent job and it's obvious that this year is all over the place.

It all feels a little bit like the badge change around 2005 tbh.

This guy certainly seems to not have a lot in terms of experience or qualifications for an in depth role at a football club.

He went into Fleetwood as a 'consultant' and somehow bagged the DoF role while there. And is now just hanging around in the background for the fewers.

******* hell. I've heard people on here talk about the Rovers reporter, but had never read one of his articles.

Talk about over the top. Barton took them down with a whimper, and then managed to get them up with an amazing 1/2 season, which he's never replicated, and was driven by a wonderkid.

The way that reads is like some articles on Guardiola and the recruitment strategy at Man City, or some of the articles that look in depth at Brentford etc.

Ashton would have loved him to be our reporter during his time.

I have never really enjoyed Guinness, even when I have been in Ireland, apparently it tastes better.

Pretty low bar to start from, and as for my plumbing....

I was a very recent convert to it as I was looking for something lower strength.

I've never tried Tyskie, wossit like?

It's a lager so if you like Estrella I reckon you'll like it. I generally like most "pilsners" but there's quite a few that masquerade as that and aren't. I am far from a snob though just like roughly 5 percent Lager/Beer from Eastern Europe apparently.

I used to drink Cider, but it just didn't agree with me.

God Monaco have had our pants down if he goes back there for compensation only!

Essentially been paid for a 4 year loan without paying any wages either.

Then he'll play 2 seasons there, win the euros with France and move to Chelsea for £20m as was always planned. ;)

I wonder why there isn’t a European competition for 2nd tier teams.  Perhaps it’s considered not enough of a money maker although there’s loads of decent sized clubs at our level here and in Europe so I think it would be popular with fans.

I think the Anglo Italian cup was stopped due to the carnage between fans in some of the other ties.

Can't remember if that's the article I read a few weeks ago when I was looking it up for some reason.

Plenty of City in Southmead as far as I know too.

Find the rush to knock the club "we should have kept or what a mistake we made" sentiment of these threads a bit frustrating.

The club has to make a decision on if to keep a player when they are young and not always reached their potential, so have to decide what the level they may go on to achieve and if it's worth our continued investment in time money etc.

As fans most of us only get to see a tiny snippet of what these players are like on the pitch as they are usually playing for the development sides or off on loan, but even if we see them play, we do not know about attitude (one of the most important factors if they have skill) or what distractions they have outside of football.

When you released players you will not always get it right, or maybe the issues the club sees with an individual go away as the player has received a kick up the back side by being released, so we cannot know if they would have been the same had they stayed.

I am not saying any of the players mentioned had problems, but for whatever reason the team that have had years of experience of identifying talent have decided they will not benefit the club going forward, I am sure its not something they do if they think money can be made in the future.

Sometimes these players need to move on for a fresh start and a different environment or coach, some will have careers, but most just disappear.

Patino is a recent example. He could stay at Arsenal and go on another 2-3 loans, and before he knows it he is 23/24 not quite making the grade and settling into a side. The club and the player lose out. So he's asking for a move which could go either way, but likely gives him a better chance of playing in a settled side.

As our academy is better we need to get used to players that look decent moving on, and should see it as a positive in terms of future money generation and also attracting young players to us. I don't really believe that we need to always think of it terms of a mistake when a player moves on and does well as it may still have been the right decision at that time.

I think clubs, and especially players are realising that the approach of trying to stock players and loan them out constantly isn't the best thing for anyone involved.

    Hi there all,

Firstly, ignore the ridiculous piece in The Sun! That should be a default position anyway, but the club knew Schumacher had won before, McKenna didn't attend, the club congratulated Schumacher and nobody stormed out. Our contingent left the ceremony at the end, but as this was close to this award being handed out, a Norwich fan who writes for The Sun has made this nonsense up.

I'd love to know what the issues you had with Ashton are. Since Day 1 at our club he's been incredible.

He reunited the fan base, got players out into the community, oversaw the recruitment of an amazing manager (a gamble), convinced disillusioned fans to return, oversaw phenomenal recruitment, including convincing many players with top Championship offers to buy into our project, has stayed out of the managers way, kept fans updated, delivered record gates, record season tickets (all in League One!), record shirt sales with massive international appear through a link  up with a global superstar, driven the further investment and redevelopment of large parts of the stadium and even on Tuesday night he got on the supporters coaches and thanked everyone personally.

We are almost ready to build a statue of the guy. He couldn't have been better at his job.

So forgive us if we aren't bothered about what he did at Ashton Gate which may have been either a) being made a scapegoat for the owner / directors or b) he genuinely made mistakes at your club which he learned from to our significant benefit.

If I found him in bed with my wife I'd tuck him in and bring him some cheese and biscuits.

    COYB.

Quite like Ipswich and glad to see you hopefully coming back up even with Ashton in charge.

Ultimately you're a massively underachieving team that have had a lot of money to spend the last two years so really he's done what would be expected I guess? I can understand why you're happy after so many years of Evans and his cost cutting.

It's a bit like if City somehow found ourselves in League Two. We'd be delighted if we came back up, but it would be the least that's expected and the proper work to be judged on will come later and that's where Ashton came unstuck with City. Not to mention that when times are not going well he hides and when he does speak it massively winds people up the wrong way. Maybe he's learnt from his time at City.

A relative of mine is a pro footballer now playing in the MLS. He joined his local club academy at age 7 and stayed with them till about 26 when he got his move abroad.

I remember his story when he was 16 and they were giving out the contracts. The lads were all called in one at a time, he got a 2 year contract and so did another, 14 were released.

he was at a premier league club, over the previous 4 years they’d been trained to be premier league players both in the pitch and off it, all 16 lads thought they would be premier league players.

After the interview my cousin was talking to the assistant manager, he said it must be hard having to let all those lads down.

not really he replied, we’ve known since they were 10 years old the two we wanted, the rest he had to keep so they could play matches!

It’s great he made it but you’ve got to feel for the ones who don’t, having to try and build a life outside football at such a young age

That's an awful story but thanks for sharing.  I guess it's better to at least be honest with the young person that your unlikely to take them on, but if they want to play they would like them to stay and they will support them any other ways they can. At least they can choose.

When you step back it's all a bit ****** up really. Kids from a young age ultimately treated like commodities by adults in their lives and very little of their own agency. All the transfer stories of really young kids around 14 years old being picked up by clubs and agents fighting over them. It must be hard for the child whose being tipped for greatness and no wonder so many don't ever quite reach those heights.

I definitely agree with what people say about parents and needing to keep them grounded too. So many parents will see the money signs and also the sheer pride of seeing their kid make it - living their dreams through their children. It's a lot for a child to process amongst all the other things that teenagers go through. Hell I've seen parents destroy their kids by forcing them into careers and university courses that they don't really want to do so it's not strictly limited to football.

It's hard when they are breaking through too - I remember I hadn't been to football for years so I was a bit desensitised and I saw this 40 year old bloke going absolutely ballistic at Jonathan Leko who was on loan and 18 at the time. Obviously I just saw an 18 year old kid out of his home city getting bare abuse for nothing other than maybe not being quite ready yet. Obviously it's all part of it, but we all forget the human elemen of this sometimes.

Im glad and hopeful the support is better now and it's also positive there is a lot more support for people when they leave the game.

Are you against Museums in general? Something that really adds to a City and attracts people?

    Strange take really.

What more is there to talk about our history with the slave trade? It's all out there. It's been well documented. I was taught about it at school. What more do we need to understand that we don't already know?

We really don't though? I love history - I've just finished Dan Jones Power and Thrones book which was written in 2021 and covers the Middle Ages. Are we suggesting he shouldn't have written it as it's all probably been written before?

Every week I get emails with the latest history books advertised. It's a massive industry and research is constant.

People say...' don't be dragged in'...but people are, especially the youngsters who read things like this for the first time. It's creating a generation who want to erase history, rather than learn from it.

This is the only site that I've seen this story posted on so far. Not seen it anywhere on the more woke places I frequent and the websites that have much younger demographics than here.

Can't even see it on the other football forums and Reddit though haven't dug that deeply and it's still early.

Nothing been posted on any of the Instant Messaging groups I am in.

My workplace is quite young and pretty liberal. I reckon they'll be interested in the history behind the story, but not have a massive view on the football badges. No one's come in raging, guardian app under the arm, suggesting we burn down Old Trafford. (Unfortunately)

    So whose being sucked in?

  14. I really thought Simon Clist would go on to play at Championship level, or top end of League One. (Division 1 and 2 as it was then.)

I also thought Ryan Harley would play at a higher level than he did, but he had a decent career on the whole. Just seen he's Assistant Manager at Notts County.

I really thought Trundle would kick on with us. He was class at times though. Just not enough pace for this level.

    Outside of City:

Thought Shevchenko would transition to Chelsea. They killed a few strikers during that period.

I thought Rovers would eventually catch us up, get a new stadium, and have attendances over 10k regularly. Not sure what I was thinking.

Loads of players hyped up by me because of FM and watching South American football on C4 in the early hours when I was kid. D'allesandro, Freddy Gurin and Diego particularly spring to mind.

Both Goater & Wells have missed a lot of internationals when they fell during our season & both have played in sides where none of their team mates are remotely of their standard.

One of Bermuda’s squad plays in the Greek second division, another is in Finland, but many are in England at clubs of about Bath City standard.

When they played Montserrat a while ago I watched the highlights, they lost 3-2 Nakhi scored both, Lyle Taylor got 2 for Montserrat, they both looked what they are, from a totally different level to everyone else who was on the pitch.

Yeah no doubt. Think Wells has 17 in 24 goals which is great.

Probably a bit like when we got a ringer in 5 a side that used to play for Rovers Youth. We were shit, but he was utter class and he'd just bang them in for fun all game. Made me appreciate how good you have to be to even get a look in at that level.

  16. Went down a bit of a rabbit hole there looking at the Bermuda National Team.

Kyle Lightbourne is there manager which is a blast from the past. Was pretty decent for Walsall if I remember correctly.

Wells is the third all time top scorer for them with 17. Goater is number one with 20.
