Drop Martin & Weimann to the bench

Start Wells up front, supported by Scott.

Given we will likely have no HNM, Williams, King or Atkinson:

                         Bentley

    Tanner  Kallas  Baker  Dasilva

    Palmer  James  Bakinson  Pring

                        Scott

                        Wells

I'd be willing to try that front 2, at least for the first 45.

Not sure I trust Bakinson and Palmer though and would prefer O'Dowda and a hopefully now fit Massengo.

I have a sneaky feeling Nige may try to move him on during January.  Signed a 3+1 deal in summer 2019, before he’d broken through, so wages won’t be high, meaning he could be attractive to several clubs.

I think it’s just Nige’s way of diffusing the question, nor speculating with the media on how bad an injury might be.  He said they’d be in yesterday to evaluate.  Not much more to say really.

I think it’s easy to say he got it wrong, because we were so poor.  We never imposed our game on them.  Wells did come on up-front and Weimann went right, as we initially stuck with 442.  But then he dropped Weimann into the hole and pushed Wells right in a 451-like formation.

(The 352 second half got cut open even easier, but we did fashion a few chances ourselves)

Up until Williams went off our two forwards were quite successful in stopping Cahill and Kelly playing into Billing and Kilkenny, and their keeper kicked long a few times.  Wells coming on started to see that change, I’d have preferred Wells to chase the ball and Martin block the passing lanes.  A bit like him and Alex Scott did v Blackpool.  Less running for Martin too.  Alas, that wasn’t the case.  With Stacey being given the freedom to join in possession with give and go’s with Lowe or Christie, our CM2 of James and King got overloaded….and it also meant the quick switch to Zemura / Anthony started happening too regularly.

Was surprised by Bakinson sub admittedly…..think Tyreeq dug his own grave with that 25 minute non-cameo.  Although it’s likely Tyreeq would stand there and let someone dig it! ?

I really wanted Bakinson to make it at City, as I do all the breakthrough lads, but I've completely lost hope for him (and respect, sadly). To have the physical advantages and loads of talent, but not to be able to find the right effort levels, never mind the consistent performances, is really disappointing.

    Let Ipswich sign him...

No UK-born babies were named Nigel in 2020, according to ONS*.

The Farage effect? or is big Nige a relic from a bygone age, no Wayne's either but Oliver is the most popular

Strange how you can almost guess a person's age by their first name.

    * Apparently 1 or 2 might have been. Min 3 required to show on official records.

No surprises on those lists, I hear those names all the time now, and half of them will be unfashionable in 10 years!

Bakinson likely to be the player that Nige referred to in his after match comments of “player(s) not having taken their chance”

He shows glimpses of being a good player but doesn’t work hard enough as @Davefevs refers to in his comments about strolling about yesterday when we were down to 10 men - just not good enough given the circumstances

Hopefully HNM for and ready to return for Tuesday (Nige’s comments pre game seems to suggest that he will) - need him now that Williams is injured

Yeah agreed. I hope you're right re Massengo. We need him back!!

I think Bakinson needs to decide if he’s up for it or not. Can really see his career drifting. Couple of occasions yesterday when others are running their nuts off (as we had 10 men) and he’s strolling, letting men run off him.

    Unacceptable.

Needs a little word from Nige. Suspect  he might struggle to make the 18 on Tuesday if Atkinson and Massengo fit, even w/o Williams and King.  Vyner can come in, Bell maybe too.

It's mad that even in a situation where three of our midfielders are injured and Bakinson has a real opportunity to secure his place in the team, he couldn't motivate himself to get stuck in.

Obviously you're right about how he didn't show any energy in his tracking back, and I also noticed one time he had a chance to compete for the ball but decided to back off. I was fuming!

How does he not know what Pearson expects of him? It's staggering.

That Bomo were taller, more athletic, more talented and pacy goes without saying. That they are head and shoulders one of the best sides seen at AG in years, ditto. That we only got beat two when five or more would have been the deserved result says everything about our defence and nothing about our creative midfield (sic) and strikers (sic). Bomo were a joy to behold but enough of them.

Against blistering pace and  visionary passing I thought our backline did ok, particularly the two youngsters at full back. To those who criticise them, Tanner backing off for their second, for example, you signally fail to read the game. Both were constantly between a rock and a hard place yesterday having always to pick up both wide man and rampaging full back. They were two on one all game, given their so-called 'colleagues' in front  gave them sod all support. Screwed if they went to cover one, screwed if they tried to hedge their bets.

Pearson's tried to instill some steel in the midfield so it was sad to see Williams injured (again) so early and King looked like he was carrying a knock long before he eventually departed, which beggars why the substitutions were made when they were? Until Dasilva appeared James looked the only City player cognizant of the fact football is a contact sport. And therein lies the problem, whilst those 3 are great at holding, disrupting and breaking-up play, creators they are not (not we've anybody to exploit creativity should we acquire it.)

So it's Groundhog Day (again) in knives out for the usual suspects. That we created four gilt edged chances not one of which made their keeper break sweat sums us up. Two to Wells who when he plays serves only to remind he IS, pound for pound,  the biggest waste money ever at AG. It isn't, 'he's in the wrong position', or 'we don't play his game'. He's crap, period. When he is in the right position and is given gilt ball he squanders it, over and over and over. His lack of control best summed up by another farcical moment on the touchline just in front of the Dolman, he halfway in his own half trying to relieve pressure, bloke up tight closing down. Sunday morning hungover player simply knocks it off the opponent's shins for the throw-in, consolidate, go again. Not Wells. Such is his lack of control it's a ball knocked straight into touch. Shocking at any level, though to his credit this time he didn't fall over feigning injury, though with the image of those laughing in his face still fresh probably not altogether unsurprising.

Like paleontologists who find remains of dinosaurs yet can't fathom how they fit together or what purpose their hosts served, we live Jurassic Park 9 through Martin. So he's no movement, pace or touch. Can't hold the ball up, rarely threatens his marker, leaves not a trace he's ever been on the park. Genus 'Izegoodenufftoscorus'? On the evidence of his woeful header late on - NO.

Flappy produced one of his finest ever flappy and pointy performances. He might as well not have bothered.  "He runs and runs and runs and covers loads of ground," say his acolytes. I remind, too, so do headless chickens. The point with Flappy it's all to no avail. He never gets there, never closes his opponent down. For him marking must obey social distancing rules. His touch is poor. And perchance he does get the odd chance, again yesterday, break out the chorus of 'how high or wide do you want the goal'? Those who say we played with 10 men when King went off, we didn't. Make that 10 from the start as Weimann contributed zip again yesterday.

At least the Mock Mick did threaten a few spin turns of note, but such scant gold leaf cannot disguise the turgid mass that lies beneath. He hung Pring out to dry first half whilst delivering little. I said at the time he should never have been offered a new contract. I hate having been proved right every game since.

To those who say it's unfair to pick out those 4, it isn't. Here's why. They are players who should be good enough to occasionally hold the ball up, knock it around, relieve the pressure from the defence. But they aren't and don't. 1-0 down, minute or so to half time and we've a throw-in half way into their half. We've been on the rack. How difficult to take it, keep it,  force them to concede short throws? See the half out. Re-group. Go again. But City contrive to do what they do best, throw-in, one touch, lost possession, cede 70 yards uncontested, allow 2 on 1 against Tanner, ship another. Game over. Their second is down to our front line, not the defence. And in that Pearson and the coaching staff must take criticism. Under WeeLee ceding possession within one touch of a dead ball play was mandatory. It pretty much still is and Pearson's been here long enough to have ensured, even with the rubbish at his disposal, that it shouldn't be.

How come Parker is so far up Furys ass? Goes to his fight, goes partying with him after, now got a Fury tee on... is he that far away from a title shot? Clearly they ain't ever gonna fight. Strange from Parker tho imo, maybe he just knows his level

I think they used him a sparring partner for the Wilder fight, but yeah he seems to be part of their crew.

As I have said I did not see the game and what you say has some hope on the wieman / wells interchange.

I just not want Wells wide . I would prefer wiemen right mid and Wells in the central role always

There was definitely no interchange anywhere on the pitch from us!

Yeah, he was a pretty major dealer wasn't he, he supposedly supplied a fair proportion of the UK's amphetamine for many years!

edit- he's a great boxing journalist Tris Dixon eh.

They're a fascinating family in that Fury clan. I wonder how much John was involved in that stuff and how much the kids were aware of it.

Tris is a bit clunky with the broadcasting but he's seriously knowledgeable and churns out good content.

Does anyone know the actual reason Peter and Tyson Fury actually fell out? Read a few theories about money owed for the Parker fight and then stuff about training in Hayes gym etc

Exactly what I read- that it was a serious falling out over money Tyson had leant Mick Hennesey and Peter, then the Haye gym training was the final straw.

Peter Fury did an interesting interview on the Boxing Life Stories podcast if you're interested. He refused to talk about the falling out, but he does open up a bit on his crime background. I thought he'd just been a bit of a heavy back in the day but he was a huge player in the drugs and protection racket.

Bankrolled, a couple of years in the Prem, plus parachute payments, more useful last season when no other Championship team other than those also of parachute payments had any sort of revenue. They can easily buy anyone in this league and still get change. They’ve not outright bought success, but they’ve used their money properly. Support and Ground wise they are arguably a smaller club, financially in terms of what they can spend they’re in a different league.

We managed to stop Fulham. What was the difference?

Why all this sound & fury? We are a depleted mid-table team & have just lost 0-2 to the team at the top of our league. Quite likely West Brom will do the same to us soon. Understand where we are & what we realistically might accomplish this year & be grateful.

The thing that bothered me today was that we couldn't even do the easy things right. Everything we did was shanked, bodged and scuffed and it got really frustrating.
