It’s a tough one, I suppose if the government gives the events the go ahead then they are confident it’s safe... but that’s for another topic!

i thought at least for an ultra type event with limited numbers it’s more likely to be on as less spectators, more spaced out event and much less runners.

I was supposed to be competing at Body Power this weekend in Birmingham but that’s been postponed to October 30th and In the current climate can’t see that being on without Some serious progress in fighting this virus.

Yeah and I think you're right that an Ultra or smaller event will be fine. I was more concerned about my choice of marathon. I'm supposed to be doing the Dursley 12 miler in 1st week of November and fully expect that to be on.

  2. Hi Harry, welcome to the fastest growing football forum running club in South Bristol! You get team number 21. Wear it with pride!

With a 1 year old, I know full well the limits that kids can place on running time. Life used to be so simple with so much time and O took it for granted. Why didn't I run more when I was single!

It sounds like you are clocking up some serious mileage (I only work in miles!). Keep up the good work!

3rd run down, 60 minutes easy pace today

I've found a race I want to attempt, and hoping it will be on https://www.phoenixrunning.co.uk/events/leviathon-50-mile-ultra

    19th September hopefully

I'm intrigued to know if races will go ahead in the Autumn. I was tempted to run Manchester Marathon in October, safe in the knowledge that if it is postponed to next year I'd keep my place. Then I thought that maybe it would be irresponsible of me to run such a crowded marathon, even if it does go ahead this year. Would I be contributing to a 2nd wave?

Smaller races, bo problem, but popular ones just don't seem feasible.

Would love to see this, but I just cant see it being safe. Currently being discussed on GMB

Firstly how can we justify testing every footballer when frontline staff still arent getting tests/results quickly enough? Our capacity for testing has dropped since we hit that debatable 100k target. 60k people tested on 11th May.

Secondly, you cant trust fans not to congregate. People will meet in parks, round houses etc to watch the football. If Liverpool / Leeds are about to win their first league in years, do you think their fans will all stay at home and watch on their TV, in the hight of summer? No chance I'm afraid.

Then there's the argument that people cant see both parents/grandchildren etc but 20+ football matches can take place across the country?

Hi Marcus, I'll try to address your points:

Testing frontline staff is the responsibility of the government. Testing footballers would be the duty of care of the EFL. If the govt is not fulfilling its duty we should look at them, not the EFL for managing to do their job.

Regards not trusting fans, I agree there could he isolated incidents but I don't think we can approach this with a distrust of our community. It will be important to share the right message and take some practical measures (plus threat of terrorism offences!)

And you mentioned that it would be odd if people can't see family members whilst footballers can play football... Well by mid June, the lockdown will likely have relaxed, and meeting both parents would probably be tolerated.

By then, we will likely be moving to a social distancing approach again with shops, cafes and restaurants opening. Only the vulnerable should be in lockdown by the time football is played.

Footballers are very low risk, and will receive VIP testing and treatment.

I reckon it’s potentially gait based but potential for a different injury.

If I look at my trainers when I think they’re “done” my left front has worn to nothing and my right front has semi worn, but the backs are ok - meaning I clearly come down hard on the front section of the foot - both sides but more to the left. If I’m doing that, it indicates a naturally stronger left side but also indicates more pressure.

That means my running gait is front land, left. That also means I am more liable to get aches on that side. On a bizarre basis a low ache may not mean though you have a problem with that specific area, it may be higher up the leg and to compensate your body overcompensates the pressure lower down.

So, I’d advise doing two things:

    - Gait analysis

    - See a sports masseuse as the problem may be caused by a knot in a different part of the leg you’re not aware of

So you've got a Kenyan style? Nice!

I think this is going to come down to player power , Villa have already said they will have three players who won’t be able to play due to health issues.

Sterling has come out with concerns about returning (reported he has lost a family member to Covid), Aguero has also said he’s ‘scared’ to return and Danny Rose has spoken out about the return of football. These are the players we know of.

Just to scrutinise this a bit...

What is Aguero afraid of? He's not only in a low risk demographic, but he has elite level health and fitness. We know his family (inc wife and child) live in Argentina. What are the chances of anything perilous befalling either him or his family?

    I think that's a fair question.

Even Danny Rose... fair enough he might not want to catch the virus off an opponent and then spread it round his household, but not only will players be tested prior to competing, they will also be able to diagnose and treat infection almost immediately. That's VIP treatment that the rest of us won't get. The bricklayers on a construction site are going to be far more at risk.

Rose also said that numbers need to be down before we think about football. Well that's  the whole point; the numbers are projected to be down in mid June. Hence we're talking about resumption.

I'm sure the concerns of these few players is genuine, but I'm not quite convinced they need to be so worried. The problem for me is more a practicality issue.

I half joked to someone on the weekend that the players questioning whether the season should resume will be the players that wear gloves during games when it's cold. It's a harsh and probably insensitive joke, but I almost expect players to have a careless (perhaps foolish) desire to compete.

  7. Don't know if we've covered this, but particularly relevant in lockdown: running books!

I've just read Running With The Kenyans, and now moving onto Finn's 2nd book, The Way of the Runner, with his 3rd book about ultra running lines up.

They're an easy read. A combo of travel writing and running story.

I've also got Dean Karnazes Ultramarathon Man lined up which is supposed to be good.

    Any others of note?

Pubs typically don't tend to attract multi-thousand crowds...

No, Oktoberfest is about as close as it comes!

I thought we had all accepted that football will be behind closed doors for the rest of year minimum?

So the point stands that if a pub can open, with people shoulder to shoulder, from July perhaps, then a bunch of blokes who adhere to social distancing guidelines should be able to play a game of footy.

Just came across this thread (and requested to join the strava club ?)

Ive been one of those that’s got our more and more during lockdown due to the gym being closed and wanted to use it as an opportunity to improve my mental game.

Ive been following the virtual Ironman club challenges and completed a couple, plus achieved my first marathon distance run during lockdown

Admittedly probably a bit irresponsible being outside for that long but I tend to be up and out at 5/6am and really lucky to live in the countryside surrounded by country roads and big fields so I can go out and barely see anyone for miles.

From Monday I’m starting a 16 week plan to get to 50 mile Ultra territory, and longer term I have my eye on a 24 hour endurance race and want to complete a real triathlon (but my swimming needs work!)

Welcome to the team Marcus! Wow - that's impressive progress, and what an achievement 50 miles would be, especially if not even in a race. I live that dedication to head out before 6am!

I'll keep an eye on strava, and let us know how you're getting on.

We've got 18 runners now. Not bad going. A couple more would be nice.

Towards the end of the summer I think we'll schedule a marathon day where we try to reach an overall mileage on a particular Sunday. I wonder what 18 runners could amass? 250 miles easy. 350 miles more difficult. Marcus, we'll need 50 from you!

But if we can get a few more runners, it would be amazing to smash 500 miles between us...

    Am with you now.

May well be- and quite right too. I'd say in a fanciful yet just scenario, relegate the bottom 6 and promote the top 6 of this League if the bottom 6 in the PL try and block it- majority 14/20 etc.

God knows how- top 5 then playoffs 6th-9th?

Yeah and my criticism goes to both the clubs selfishly pushing for a restart becausethey have somethingto play for, and the bottom 6 and their blatant self-preservation scheming. Also Man City who have wheeled out players to add doubts to the restart, surely just to scupper their rivals. In mid table there might actually be a few clubs who just want what is correct and proper in a difficult environment (but maybe they just want some TV income!)

I don’t think that will happen, at least I hope not. They were talking about pubs with beer Gardens opening as they would be safe in the open air. I wouldn’t have thought anywhere selling food and drink which you didn’t take away would be allowed to operate without offering toilet facilities, and there you have the problem.

Also with regard to workplaces and schools opening once they have rearranged fixtures and fittings to accommodate students, workers and customers. Great, until you realise most people travel to work on crowded trains and buses etc.

There are a lot of problems to be sorted until football gets back. Health has to be more of a priority than a game, which essentially that’s all it is, and I’m saying that as a football fan of course. A ‘non-believer’ won’t understand football returning at all.

Going back to your point, I will be pretty pissed off if the people that are shielding away now when people are literally risking their lives to shop for them, look after them and treat them are the first to jet off into the sun after the lockdown ends.

I would argue that a beer garden poses more viral threat to society than a behind closed doors football game. The same goes for plenty of non-essential public activities.

So if we're serious about shutting down non-essential public businesses whereby social distancing cannot be enforced, it should be done across the board, not just the preferred business type.

I think you make a very sensible points by the way, but I'm still inclined to think resumption can work.
