The crowd wasn't actually that good, in what was a crucial game. I'd expected more.

To be fair I didn't hear the attendance, but was certainly more fuller than the past few games, which fair enough were cup games. Yes it was an important match, but I honestly feel many have given up. The break in league fixtures didn't come at the right time for us, and a hell of a long break too. Any bit of confidence they had before last night must certainly be drained now. Hanging on by their fingertips for sure.

  2. Quins  hit us from the start, got early points on the board. The Varndell injury and then having our player binned just before HT were killer blows too. Again sloppy handling and poor decisions cost us. Can't say we were ever in the game even though it was close during much of the first half. Looked a fairly decent crowd, seemed a fair few Quins fans too. But this really felt like a huge nail in the coffin.

Do u think he should start today.

Good question, to be honest I'm not sure.

I guess he's been playing regularly so no problem with fitness as such, even though the game is quicker and more skillful at this level. I've no idea what sort of player he is, more of a box hanger I would imagine. He doesn't look overly tall so might not win much in the air. Defenders at this level will have a bit more about them than he is used to, also he hasn't had long to get to know his team mates, and to play him will we have to change formation and go 2 up top, and who do we drop?

If we start him and then sub him off after an 'average' match without scoring people might see him as a flop, the Gasheads would love this too if we cared what they thought about OUR player. So better to have him on the bench, bring on around 60 minutes (depending on what the game is like). He's got a 30 minute taster of the lower end of the Championship, he would have been watching for an hour on the bench making him hungry for some action hopefully.

So for me bench and then a used sub.

    You? Any other opinions anybody?

  4. Rugby clubs also issue their team selections days before games. Surely knowing the team you can guess tactics. Not sure what info could be given that could help in a game where, as @Tomarsesays, it could be affected by yellow cards or indeed injuries happening on the day.

I would also think it would be hard to prove info had been passed, unless a recording was made, it's just one persons word against another. But they must think they have something as he has been sacked, or were they looking for an excuse to get rid anyway. Is he any good, maybe Bristol should take him!

Brownhill tiring was a large part of what went wrong at the end against Reading, plus going to 4-4-2 from 4-1-4-1, adding extra work for those left in midfield against fresh substitutes. He needed replacing  on both occasions st about 70 minutes but that didn't happen with the consequences of conceding late goals.

I am trying hard not to blame Brownhill himself because I think there is a potentially good player if he can progress appropriately and cuts out the silly mistakes like the back heel against Cardiff. I just don't think he can do 90 minutes at this level yet & LJ should also have realised that. Considering how many midfielders we have you would hope that we had a replacement somewhere on the bench who could come on earlier than after the opposition have already scored the winning goal.

We have to be able to play to 90 minutes. Until then we are risk of conceding late and losing by a single goal. And all compounded by the lack of confidence engendered by doing it again & again in the last 2-3 months.

    Totally agree. Well said.

Im glad someone else noticed and brought this up.

I wasn't at the match so avoided 'highlights' as long as I could before curiosity beat me.

I must have re-watched their third goal 10 times and for the life of me I cannot fathom what Brownhill was attempting. He actively got out the way of the Cardiff player to open up the space to shoot via a cuddle with the ref. He'd have been more effective had he just layed down on the turf in front of him.

I think he was just ran ragged.  He seemed to be attempting to cover for another player who was no where in sight. It would be harsh to lay all the blame on him as he was one of the few bright sparks until then. But it was a bad mistake by a fading player. Coaching staff should have noticed, and acted, on how much Cardiff were pushing our under pressure players.

  7. All I can remember from the Cardiff defending was Flint trying to do his best Tony Adams impression, and all this defenders deserting him, backing off and pushing out at the same time, it looked a mess.  This caught him on the back foot and constantly have to readjust. Add into that Brownhill, who was good going forward at least, seemingly marking the Ref and the rest us history. Shocking.

  8. Well and truly outclassed last night, men against boys. Just shows by resting a couple of key players, just how important they are. I've seen Bristol lose a lot this season but they haven't looked so outdone as this, poor.

But that said, it's all about Premiership survival.

What are the road closures for Saturday?

It's Winterstoke road isn't it, for the metrobus roadworks. They have been closing the road early evening after matches to do work, but amazingly they can't wait until after a 3 o'clock kick off finishes this weekend so moved the match 12pm KO...its just pure coincidence we are playing Cardiff, apparently! The road then can be closed earlier, don't think it's shut before match, but don't quote me on that!

Gotta feel for the staff at Ashton Gate, got the Bath game and then back in early the next day for the Cardiff early kick off.

I guess they will be working though the night on that one. Yes originally it was football at 3pm on Saturday followed by rugby 24 hours later. Now TV schedules and road closures (!) leave a much smaller turnaround with rugby first, the perfect storm..even without the predicted weather. I have great faith in our groundstaff though, they do a great job.

  11. Reading the comments above its made me change my mind a little, I was feeling frustrated we don't have a league game for a month just when we were finding a bit of form, but maybe it could be a good thing. We have a new player arriving don't we, gives us time to bed him in. Also Gav maybe back in the next few weeks, but Woodward has been kicking everything so not so urgent now.

Im feeling a bit gutted, no a lot gutted, I'm in Newcastle when we play Bath in the league, but will be going on Friday for the Cup match so that will have to do.

They lie. Haven't you twigged yet..?!

They either set a lower capacity to excuse their shite attendances, or they inflate their attendances to make them slightly less shite.

Everyone knows the Mem had a capacity of 12k and that was before their new tent was errected. So now it must be 12.3k

So if they declare higher attendances than they can fit in aren't they in breech of ground regulations for one, and also got to hand more £££ over to the tax man or whoever gets a cut?

That has got to be the hope.

Got to both of the Reading and Birmingham games, enjoyed them both, thought we played pretty well and that on another day we could have got something out of both. We looked a solid mid table side.

However you slice it, defeats against four teams in a row in the bottom half has led us wondering where our next point is coming from. We look weak in midfield, porous at the back, and left scratching my head as to dust had gone wrong. Confidence must be getting shot, and we really need a result of two to steady the ship.

I was at Birmingham and Reading too, we played well especially against Brum I thought and were desperately unlucky. Compare those games to our recent games at home to Brentford and Preston and we looked a shadow of ourselves. I didn't see the Wolves game first hand  but it sounded much like tonight's performance. We are getting worse as naturally the confidence has drained from us.

We lack a real leader on the pitch, Flint aside as he's had his own problems during these mstches too. Our senior players are failing to appear as the experienced Pro's they are. We just seem to be caught up in an ever changing swirling mess of team changes, now partly due to injury and illness.

I really don't know what the answer is, it's beyond us all as we don't know details behind the scenes. By that I mean what the players have written into their contracts etc. I'm glad it's not my problem, but problem it is.

    LLLLWLLLLL

For anyone else that would mean the sack.

I'm a supporter of Lee's, probably only because I don't want to believe the wrong person was appointed as it would be yet another failure in our history. But seeing all those 'L's' in black and white don't lie. You can't dress it up, we haven't got a player who will make a difference ready to return from injury or suspension for example.

No away win since I saw the game at Fulham in September (?) is terrible.

Just listening to him on the radio now, sorry but I don't feel loved right now, it's not enough to tell us that.

Are we talking about the side that didn't win a game until today and are rock bottom, let's hope our football team are not watching tapes of them with all due respect

You clearly didn't understand my point, maybe that's more me than you but some others have grasped what I intended to highlight, with all due respect to you too.

@Dollymarie aIf you like Varndell you should check out his 2 minute interview he gave today - I found it on the Bristol rugby twitter.

I am as straight as they come but those arms get your mind wandering !!

@Dollymarie and I have already had a discussion about him. I don't know first she eyes up Flinty after I saw him first now she's noticed Mr Varndell. I can about accept that, now luckily for me she didn't get to see Tovey play today (where were you Jack :sad26:) If she sets her sights on him there's going to be trouble!!!

    Good for them.

Maybe this can be moved off Football Chat now.

Just for you...it can stay here for a while now.

The topic was clearly titled so if you weren't interested perhaps you shouldn't have looked. I have made it relevant to football in any case.
