To quote Liam “That’s the biggest bit isn’t it”?

What @Cowshed accurately describes is the process of a rebuild. (And for gods sake nobody respond with “top six squad” etc etc).

In the process of a rebuild - if utopia is your only aim - then things can go wrong. Often. And in a lot of ways this is just another angle on what’s already been said about Liam - can he adapt his approach to stop those things going wrong until he reaches somewhere near utopia in all the sectors you identify.

Eg you replace Williams with Bird - you move a touch more towards ball retention, but it’s not the model Cowshed suggests. How do you play then?

You then replace Conway with a different type of front man - more physical - but it’s still not utopia. How do you play then?

You replace Mehmeti with someone with more nouse and game awareness - it’s another step. How do you play then?

(NB at any point this is not a mass change, but a tweak - going from A-B as opposed to the whole alphabet)

From the way Liam wants to play we are probably 2-3 seasons as I said from seeing results. What he has to do is not rip up the base and he has to be able to play at each stage. So if he thinks he has 40% of what he needs now - that’s fine. Play as close as you can to your principles in a way that utilises that 40% in the best way. If the summer gets you to 60% - great, tweak again. But you’re never getting to 100% so you always need to compromise.

In a nutshell, I think that’s what we saw with Nige. The annoyance is that I think we’d tipped over the 50% mark in the way he wanted us to play and from there it’s generally an upswing. We’ve reset though - we are where we are.

I’d repeat - there is a bit of a misconception over people’s misgivings around Liam. They are around adaptability, in game management etc - in short what happens when the plan doesn’t work or you can’t implement it as opposed to anything else. And getting from where he is to his utopia is pretty much just another strand to that - but if he can’t manage those transition periods - irrespective of what we can see the intent is, he won’t be here long.

and just a note regarding the potential level of squad 'churn'.

assume you can actually shift 1 or 2 players for money, (?) but given the state of the market this would mean we would be - once again - writing off a lot of players by terminating contracts or letting them go. Otherwise we will  end up with a Russell Osman size (and style) squad of overwhelming indifference!

not exactly a sustainable way of operating

So many of these threads begin with 'Posted Saturday 17.05' or similar.

I fully understand the frustration but I think LM deserves more time to work out how to get points out of a game, during the game, when we are being tactically out played.

he had a full 45 minutes on Saturday to see where the shortcomings were. he didn't get it fixed, he didn't change it  (enough to make a difference)

if you are suggesting we just give him 'more time' across the remainder of this season (where we were meant to be 'pushing for the play offs' - JL/SL/BT)  look at our points tally - we are heading in the wrong direction and will be very soon potentially worried about staying up.

Just ask yourself, which other professional football club would choose Jon Lansdown for their Chairman or indeed Brian Tinnion as their Technical Director.

    Maybe League 2?

They are both rank amateurs and should not be in post.

Incompetence is one thing but they take it to a whole new level!

both are only in post to serve as lightning rods for the owner.

Steve Lansdown has had all the time in the world to prove himself, but has only managed to oversee mediocrity and indecision, with the added bonus that this rudderless ownership has saddled us with considerable debt (which we are somehow grateful that he supports??) sadly he thinks he is building a sporting dynasty in the form of Barcelona,  not so Steve, not so.

    Step away.

I still recall Trevor Francis (RIP) getting Achilles injuries in the early 80s, and blaming it on the lightweight, “modern” (as it was at the time) boot.  They only got lighter and lighter over the years.  Any school of thought on that?

    +++++

I still remember my first pairs of Puma Kings, they had a nice thick leather, still soft, not over heavy, but over the years the leather got thinner and thinner.  No idea what today’s boots are like, it’s 20+ years since I played.

there was also that spell when loads of metatarsal injuries happend as the boots didn't protect the top of the foot. boot design trying to be clever to get more sales.

but back to the socks, i cannot believe it's that difficult to create varying tightness around the calf.

I was told recently by our practice nurse that my cholesterol had gone up a bit in my last check up. I said I put this down to the increase in baking and cooking I was doing since lockdown and retirement, which meant my butter consumption had increased.

She suggested I try plant butter as it was very low in cholesterol. I was a bit sceptical as to how it would perform, but thanks to Lidl having a deal on that made it cheaper than dairy butter, I thought I would try it.

Well, I have to say, my sponges are moister, both short crust and puff pastries for savoury or sweet products have drawn some great reviews from family and friends, and on my check up last week the nurse confirmed that my cholesterol levels had returned to their previous levels.

If you look around you can find it in both spread and block form, and I would highly recommend it. I have tried several brands depending on price point, so far the results have been much the same for all, although some of the spread versions are easier to work with than others.

Give it go if you haven't tried it, let me know what you think.

    which brands?

I wouldn't tinker and return to any old badge for our main kits, now or long term. It's great having older replica kits in production but our existing badge is nice and classy (not the eagle).

Stick to our existing brand for me.

    100%

sticking to ONE brand would be good ATM.

The keeper was already going down to his left before Bell shot. Seen it a few times now and it looked a lot easier to round the keeper and roll the ball in with his left foot. I also thought him and Harry caused them lots of problems.

If we'd gone in at ht 4 up nobody would mention the change of tactics..... Let's just savour the win.

to me, Bell just hesitated at the wrong moment, also think he could have knocked it around him.

Tbh there is some logic to switching things around at half time when ahead to bluff the opposition manager as, in theory, he would be putting a plan in place to counter the way we were playing in the first half. However if we can see things aren't working then we should be looking to change mid game. I guess while we always had the luxury of a 2 goal cushion we had a buffer so as not to panic. If boro had scored earlier then maybe LM would've changed things again. Who knows!? But overall he's got us into a 2 goal lead at a tough place & after the exertions of the recent overload so fair play. The 3 or 5 did work OK against West ham, Watford and Forest but the 3 reverted to a 5 v Leeds & it seems it did so again today and when you play with a 3 & 5 there will always be a tendency to drop into a 5 & 3 as those wide players are invariably fullbacks by trade. Let's hope LM learns lessons by testing things & we certainly have the basis of a good squad just lacking that bit of quality up top.

    agree.

I was hugely disappointed with Conways contribution when he came on. sure, he was getting the ball played to his feet, but he neither pressed not tackled back, rather drifted around not offering very much (did a lot of pointing though) compare to Wells who also rarely gets the ball played into feet, but is much much wiser at positioning himself to interfere with play, he tackles back and chases lost causes much more effectively.

Without any forward threat whatsoever, the ball was just coming straight back at us all half. one of the reasons we spent so much time defending. Mehmeti also offered little by way of intelligence in the situation too IMO, but at least tackled back.

I would have subbed Conway and thrown the new kid on personally.

he looked like he wasn't interested

This is all well and good until you have people in power like the Nazis. (An extreme example I admit)

    or the Tories....

joking aside, there is a scary erosion of civil liberties at the moment, the latest one regarding prosecuting people in masks, which is so catch all as to be unworkable, but you suspect they will shove it through.

We have seen plenty of evidence (at the coronation for example) of people getting pulled, held for hours and then released with no charge and a feeble apology. it's all done in a creeping, low level manner, but not great.

back to the OP, i understand entirely his unease.

It looks ( and sounds ) like we will be going to a 3 for the most part and to show my working out ..

Sykes has to play, big goal threat and been a regularly good performer.
    Pring & McCrorie pick themselves.
Balance means a left & right CB and as Dickie has been like the Bemmy Beckenbauer he plays central.
Williams has been brilliant lately & I feel Knight is better deeper.
    Twine, teachers fav
    TC , Obvs.

so , my theory, which means nothing.

this is harsh on Tanner, who has been improving for me.

I thought McCrorie could also play DM? but strangely we have a few choices there ATM. he doesn't work for me as a wing back, in fact i thought we looked more vunerable to their wingers against Watford. there were huge gaps appearing and the MF players didn't go wide to pick up the men.

the change on saturday worried me, we had that air of noone knowing what they were meant to be doing for ages.

not worried about Mehmeti, he doesn't cut it for me. takes the wrong option most everytime.

    i want Sykes back though

  12. the policing after the game seemed a bit random. they stopped you going into the park (2 horses) but everyone just went along 10 feet and went over the wall - what was the point in blocking us at the gate then?

also the police kettled the WH fans then as it got a bit lairy they just let them loose with the city fans. again pointless IMO

  13. i do hope he meant this intentionally, but Carters comment about O'Sullivan clearing his nose was accidentally very funny.

"It's just disgusting, no one wants to say anything though do they?" said Carter.

"Snotting all over the floor and all that, it's outrageous behaviour from a top professional and if it gets swept under the carpet then it's not good."

  14. we bought one for the new house as one room smelt a bit damp, it took a few weeks but the unit definately helped reduce it. (the reading on the unit we bought helped tell you what the humidity is/was) it's amazing to have to empty that much water every other day.

we don't need it so much now but can also dry clothes with it so v useful.

ours was a bigger unit, but def worth it.
