Badly want to see LCD Soundsystem. Amazing band.

If you're in the area 1st September I think you're going to be in luck...

(I wonder if we should have a general Bristol gigs / festivals thread..?).

  2. You'd be surprised, a lot of the plant-based stuff is great (there's a fair amount of horrible stuff too mind, but it's loads better than it used to be). I'd be wary about using too many 'ultra-processed' alternatives though, the amount of shite that goes into these things to make them mimic real stuff is insane and only recently really coming to light. In isolation though great stuff and glad it's clearly worked for you 👍

Yeah, remember similar being said with the McLaren car last year.

A shame because it makes it harder to tell the cars apart at a glance.

Personally would like to see the cars made smaller again (without excessively dropping safety) because a huge part of the problems with the racing now is because the cars are 5m long. This would also makes them a lot lighter and they wouldn't look so unresponsive in corners.

100% agree. The size of the cars these days is a huge issue. I was watching 1997 highlights the other day and the cars look tiny!

Every car revealed so far for this season has black as a main colour on its body.

The Sauber (stake) team does stand out more from the others, but the others aren't as easy to distinguish just at a glance.

It's all an attempt to save weight. These days they struggle to get the weight down (previously they would be under the minimum weight), so reducing the amount of paint used helps with that.

Some of the players from the seasons they've chose as the main photo have been woeful. Nyatanga, Flapper Phillips, Miller and Butler 😂

Thought the same, Greg Cunningham too, doesn't he ****ing hate us now?

Genuinely thought Tony Butler was Phil Neville at first glance too.

Was it not rumoured on here the streets were headlining?

Doesn't fit in with the line up currently

Nah exactly, they're at Love Saves the Day in May, there may well have been some confusion over that. Can't really see them coming back a month later to headline a completely different festival with no real musical similarity.

I think the thing is you have to take your musical bias out. I’m an indie fan, and I remember on a prior discussion there were people saying they should get Weller to play the gate - love Weller, seen him several times, but he’d never sell it out.

What I think has happened here is that someone in BS likes artists like Ne-Yo and has been blinded by personal bias as opposed to research to see if it would sell.

The bottom line is that if it was a viable proposition, the established concert promoters would have looked to put it on. They didn’t, but Bristol Sport thought they knew better.

Concert Promoters, Medical Professionals….theres a pattern here of thinking you know better than experts with no basis for doing so…

Exactly, and let's face it what current indie bands are big enough these days to sell out 30k at AG? Maybe you could roll out Noel or Liam and largely get there but no one 'current' really. And even if you do manage to identify those artists, why would they play at AG over something like Forwards? If you're the Chemical Brothers or LCD Soundsystem or someone that warrants the headline status, Forwards is surely the more logical option.

One of the other things here is the sheer bloody arrogance of Bristol Sport when it was questioned that they might have got it wrong. It’s symptomatic of the organisation but they pretty much outright trolled people who questioned them. Whoever booked this shitshow and got it so wrong has probably cost the organisation money (and therefore possibly impacted finances to the football club)

All because Jon saw the Fyrefest documentary and thought it was a guidebook as opposed to a warning

I thought the same at the time actually, very weird social media presence. Responding like teenagers

  9. It's hard to say really - Ne-yo has a pretty much sold out UK arena tour, there is a logic to it. Problem is, arenas like the one in Leeds are what, 15k? This is a 30k day festival - with another relatively big name it might do well, but I'd be presuming that they were waiting to see how well ticket sales went before finalising the next round of names.

It was incredible mate.Best gig I have ever been to by an absolute mile. The build up during the day in the Manchester pubs was incredible. It felt like the Stone Roses fans had taken over the entire city.I would love to getba dvd of the gig but have never been able to find one.

Was at the same run of gigs at the Etihad, and you're quite right, the build up was amazing. Felt like before a football match, crammed in belting out a bit of Oasis and the like.

I assume Public Enemy supporting had something to do with Ian Brown being a big fan. Have to say the new 2nd John Squire tune with LG is a belter.

  11. I'm not sure of that to be fair. In the Lansdown you have only 3 blocks still quite empty, and 3 more over in the Dolman - aside from that it's all VIP tickets and standing which is quite hard to judge just from the ticket map. Unless I'm seeing something a bit different - I think the sheer amount of VIP tickets makes it quite deceptive.

  12. Yep agreed, I too remember him saying that, but I'm not sure there would ever be a financial benefit to filling in those corners due to the sheer amount of expense. On the Lansdown side you'd probably squeeze in the equivalent of about 3/4 of a single block of seats given the building that is already there, and on the Dolman side looking at an aerial view you'd have to slice off a decent chunk of the Atyeo Stand itself to get any seats in there, as the Atyeo is still a fair bit off-centre from where we moved the pitch.

To be fair that’s the figure quoted across the media - go on bbc, itv, nme etc. Ashton Gates website says capacity 27k for sport and 32k for concerts so it may even be higher but the actual figure will depend on stage setup. If it’s 32k for normal gigs then 27k seems right with the two stage setup.

The two stages are next to each other btw, so shouldn’t impact capacity too much if at all. On the ticket purchase screen you can see the second stage is tiny in comparison to the main one.

I have an awful feeling this is going to bomb.

The fact is, it isn’t a festival where you can go all round a site. 27,000 is a lot of people for that space for a ten hour stretch and they’ll be packed in. On the assumption Ne-Yo is the biggest name there it’s a premium price for a broadly second tier headliner, and people won’t be shelling £60+ for the other acts when you could see them at smaller venues.

All very Blue/Atomic Kitten “gig at the gate” vibes

See I think it will sell out okay. A few of us are mocking it as it's not our style but this is a decent lineup for plenty of people, and nostalgia acts are doing really well at the moment. Ne-Yo already has an arena tour across the UK booked in March at 15k - 20k venues - there's no reason why 30k here isn't possible with likes of Craig David added on.

It might not be our cup of tea (it certainly isn't mine!) but it could actually be a decent lineup in terms of generating revenue, in which case for Bristol Sport it would be a success.
