The County Cricket Thread

In addition to Somerset, I can’t believe any other County, their members or their fans/supporters are in favour of a format that deprives them of County cricket in the middle of summer and, of course, the school holidays.

I should imagine the only people in favour are those with vested interests - we all know who they are, including the overseas ‘stars’ who come over here for a final payday.

Dunno if already posted or discussed in the past, but Somerset are not fans of the current schedule.. .would they vote however for it if the 3 divisions of 6 came onto the table and they finished 7th or 8th say.

I’ve heard that next year is likely to be pretty much the same as this, meaning a vote now would be for 2024.

However, you never know what’s coming next with this lot. A win tomorrow and a top 6 place is within our grasp

And should we indeed beat Warwickshire, Northants lose (Yorkshire have already done) so, a top six position, fifth even, would seem very possible.

Grab it with both hands, pull up the drawbridge, limit the 'top' division to six teams and ensure we retain our First Division place indefinitely.

Except, that would be crass and unsporting, not something for which Somerset are renowned - forget Worcestershire ?.

Seriously, though, I have heard that next year there will be eight teams in Division One, so we should (Surely!) be safe this season.

Waller retiring at season end.  I mean he's not really featured in any format for a while now so I guess it was enviable he was either off elsewhere or retiring.

Must have been one of the first specialist white ball cricketers in this country, with just 9 first class matches.

Amazing T20 figures and was one of our most reliable bowlers for years and saved a few runs in the field too.

I`ve often wondered how financially secure cricketers like him who have had a good, steady career but not really torn up any trees or played international/(much)franchise cricket are when they retire. I guess it`s down to how well he`s planned for it but I doubt he`s rolling in cash.

Crikey, nowhere near rolling in cash, he’s not had much franchise cricket either.

I agree it’s a mystery how these chaps plan for the future! I know in the past cricketers have given up the game to concentrate on proper careers. I guess that’s where you can praise franchise cricket, it’s given players a chance to earn a decent bit of cash.

I see Max has been awarded a testimonial next year and in the old fashioned way I guess it’s money all going to help him out in whatever he does next.

England have made Leach unavailable for the last two games.

He bowled 45 overs in the South Africa series and England don’t play a test until December. Mind blowing.

We look like we might get out of trouble so action had to be taken to nip that in the bud. I expect they`re contacting Essex to see if there`s anything they want to complain about too.
