Sports bar open on Saturday!

Guess the SC&T need to fill they are getting something for their money. Personally I think it's a joke. Shouldn't be divided for anyone. There was loads of space up there yesterday while people were queuing outside to get in. Really don't understand it...

The staff were great. I had a look at the menu and thought who the hell came up with this?! Do they realise they are catering for football fans? The whole layout had a canteen feel about it, certainly not what I was expecting.

I always get down the get in time to park and to the ground 20 mins before kick off. Was hopeful this sports bar would be something that would encourage me to get there early to watch the early kick off. However I think I will be sticking to my usual routine.

Bound to be a much better experience when 'down market street' gets opened, and when the new Williams is opened as there will be more room.

  • SC&T Board Members

How much does it cost to join the Supporters Club & can kids join?

It costs from just £1 a month for adults (see here for list of benefits for each type of membership). Membership for kids is just £5 a year.

After the War, the Supporters Club did a great deal to help City access the steel to expand the main grandstand (latterly called the Williams). As a gesture of thanks, Harry Dolman provided the SC with a bar in the stand for their members to socialise and carry on theri fundraising activities for the football club. I understand that he was so keen that they should have this facility, that he gave it to them on a 99-year agreement at £1 a year.

Since then, due to various redevelopments of the ground the faciltiy has moved a number of times. The small area on the mezzanine (capacity for SC&T members yesterday was just 50) is in effect the continuation of Harry Dolman's generous appreciation of the value that an organised supporters group can bring to the football club.

It wasn't a great experience and not being able to use the whole bar is just stupid and will alienate a lot of supporters including me going by what people were saying when turned away upstairs. Why does the SC&T need their own bar on match days and why can't the WAGS use part of hospitality lounges ? I'll be avoiding it on match days and, if the same arrangements apply when there are televised games, I'll be avoiding it then as well.

It's supposed to be a supporters bar - not a club for paying members or somewhere private for WAGs.

It isn't a supporters sports bar, it could be, but its nowhere near it at the moment.

The WAGs can't use the corporate facilities in the South Stand as they are taken up by a) the Lansdown Club in the hospitality area by the Dolman corner; and b) the corporates who have paid for boxes in the Williams next season use the area by the Williams corner.

This is another simple case of the stadium being 'work in progress'. Once the Williams is completed they'll be plenty of room for the SC&T and WAGs in either the South Stand or Williams hospitality areas and I assume therefore that from next season the entire Sports Bar & Grill will be for general access.

Interested to know what was on the menu that offended people so much?! It was done in conjunction with the Chef from The Pony & Trap so should be excellent! In fact I've heard the food in hospitality is superb...

One of the attractions of the SC&T is having their own match day bar. There has always been such a facility ever since the the Supportrs Club originated many decades ago.

Its not an exclusive club at all - anyone can join.

I was irritated yesterday having to share the space with the WAGS. Their presence reduced the capacity considerably. That said I understand that with all the rebuilding underway that space is at a premium at AG currently and there's nowhere else to put them.

A few notes on my experience of the Sports Bar saturday.

Staff - excellent.

Beers - good selection, just like a pub...

Food - crap. Who had the idea of that menu ? its pretentious bollux.

Upstairs - why is there such a large area given over to "gold" members of the Supporters Club & Trust ? Its divisive and totally over the top.

The "biggest pub screen in Europe" - crashed during the Chelsea v Arsenal game and didn't come back on during that game. So watched it on one of the TVs but the music and the new ashton gate fly through on a loop on the "biggest pub screen in Europe" drowned out the commentary for the sky game.

Sports bar my arse.

I'll be giving it a miss and sticking to the pubs I normally use - mainly due to the divisive crap of giving over nearly half the bar to some exclusive paid for club.

You mean you don't go to football for salmon and crab fishcakes?!?!

Of course... #standard.

Isnt that where all the impotant people go??

Why the fudge would it be?

Anyways, didn't go in there yesterday, but may do when the hype withers off slightly.

As for SC&T and WAGs etc.... Why not use the Heineken lounge? Sounds pretty divisive in what I'd imagine as a place for City fans. City fans FULL STOP.

Yes Blagdon Red mentions the history and the favour, though is this really necessary? It wouldn't seem so. I did notice queues to get in and there was empty space still inside?!

With all respect to the SC&T, I don't think it's really required as essential. In terms of any 'privelidge' given the history and Harry Dolman, how about additional discounts? Would make more sense than creating a 'space' in a sports bar & grill.

My understanding is the SC helpef the club when it needed help amd in return they got a 99 year lease to have a bar within the ground. No problem with that at all.

No, not a problem on the face of it, but I do feel uncomfortable if the division in fans is visible and empty seats are available whilst fans queue outside. I understand the 99 year lease thing granted after the war, at this time a bar in a stadium was probably something really special. I haven't a clue but did people drink at a football stadium normally? I doubt it very much as there was literally a pub on every corner back then. Harry Dolman granted something which is now so outdated it doesn't sit well with me personally.

If the SC trust had room space where they could have regular meetings I think this would be more fitting. The need for aseparate bar isn't needed, at least not for the reason why it was granted.  They could discuss future fundraising and speak to club officials more easily. Apologies if this is now the case since the rebuild, but I thought they until now held their meetings in a local pub?

I understand why the players, corporates, board members would want to separate themselves from the 'normal' fan, but I'm sorry but for the life of me don't understand why the SC &T members would want to do the same.

I'll say it again, the bar space isn't a new thing. It's been a dedicated space for years and years. The only space as such (as in seats) that were spare on Saturday were those in the players wives and girlfriends section of the mezzanine.

No one had an issue when the bar was above the Dolman. :)

I totally agree with you RedM - why on earth would a group of City fans want to have an exclusive space where no-one else is welcome unless they pay a membership fee, and even then not all levels of membership are allowed in!

And looking at the minutes of their meetings, on average about 12 members turn up so does that level of interest warrant an exclusive space?!

I'm not knocking the existence, objectives or effectiveness of the Supporters Club & Trust, but just can't understand why they want to separate themselves from 'normal' fans on a match day because they don't stump up £20 odd a year, even though many of the excluded fans go to every away game.

Obviously can't talk for anyone else but I didn't know you had an exclusive bar before.

And how was the bar 'above the Dolman'?!

Was it in a room in Nelson Mandela House?!

Business lounge, first class rail, velvet rope... seriously, you pay a premium you get extra.

I'm not a member, but I have no problem with those who pay more getting more. If you are happy just making a small contribution (be it through financial need or wont), then great. I'd imagine the trust appreciate your membership. If you can or want to contribute the cost of a pint and a half every month in exchange for the chance to drink in more comfortable surroundings, go for it.

I'll gladly play a fiver towards the upkeep of the forum, when it work with the devices I use to access it - for example.

I walked past the old SC office many years ago and and chatted briefly to the guy on the desk. He told me the SC had a members bar with reduced bar prices. He allowed me to go up the stairs to see the SC bar and I saw the late Bob Fricker behind the bar.

I joined the SC the following week and it soon became my per match drinking hole with easy access for a halftime piss without having to queue up. When Lindleys took over they did away the bar discount.....

Now.....the only reason I joined the SC was because of the bar facilities.

By the time the SC amalgamated with the trust the SC bar had moved across the Dolman and continued to be used by all members.

Now the same facility is in the Mezz bar in the South Stand.

Its supposed to be a Sports Bar & Grill not necessarily a City supporters bar. Conceivably it could be full of Gasheads on a saturday afternoon (okay maybe full is pushing it a little). Teething problems aside i think it was pretty good. Its a shame upstairs was off limits but the players families and SC&T have to go somewhere, not sure why peoples noses have been put out of joint by it. As they have said, there has always been a bar set aside for them just obviously many didn't know about it. I could understand if that wasn't the case for this season but if they weren't there the upstairs would all be reserved for the Wags anyway. I wonder if we hadn't have lost if there would have been such a reaction?

Really pleased that the drinks were a very reasonable price and there were plenty of staff serving and i didn't have to wait long to order drinks even when it was at its busiest. I think they need a clear rule about the reservation of tables/booths but I'm sure they will learn from it. I'd like a couple of TV's on the wall by the standing area as you can't see the big screen from there. I felt for the poor young waitress who spilt the curry Source down the freshly painted white wall and on the carpet!

I have my doubts how well it will do during the week when there are no live sport at the ground so i think it needs to be marketed very well but id defiantly go there to watch City/England games on TV and if the plan comes off to screen other away games there it would be fantastic. I really hope it proves a success.

Rubbish pictures, but these were taken last year in the Supporters Club and Trust bar.

It was a much larger area before this weekend with its own bar on the same level.

understand now that SC&T have always had a bar etc, but as this is temporary due to build maybe for one season they could have done without?? Just seemed silly that there were people queuing up outside and spaces cordoned off upstairs. Hopefully when build complete they can use all the space that will be vacated in Atyeo for a new permanent home for SC&T?
