Sports bar open on Saturday!

Yep, brill to hear Dave L confirm how brilliant the view is from the upper tier of the bar where normal fans aren't welcome

I love it they interview the chap with the best seat in the bar( mez level) surrounded by empty seats. All he needed was a prawn sandwich. Couldn't make out if it was the sports bar or the Heineken lounge!

Not trying to start an argument, but I don't think it's that relevant to have a sectioned area in such a place.

As it appeared very busy, it's a bit of a waste.

it's interesting that only 40 to 50 people from the gold members are allowed access to this area, I wonder how the club intend to deal with this when a ground safety certificate is issued?

Presumably when the area is opened for general access someone will be stationed on the stairs to count the people in and out?

I had a good mooch around and I couldn't (1) see a dedicated area for the Willem II Fans (2) see anyone purporting to be liaising with fans or (3) get my chips in a cone, as a result of being told in previous seasons that plates weren't available.

Oh. And (4) they refused to accept my Food Vouchers. And while I'm at it - (5) when my ticket didn't work I asked for Kev Smith but they seemed never to have heard of him. Hmmmmmm.

Next time ask for Mr Ashton and you'll be sorted for all 5 points without any quibble

I didn't go in Saturday, but attended the Rugby World Cup opening and England game on Friday night and my experience of the Sports Bar was excellent.

We were greeted by a polite gentleman and were quickly given a table (we hadn't booked). All night long we received table service from the extremely friendly staff who were efficient and fast.

Good selection of beers/cider and the food, although being 'tapas' had a local feel to it (Sausages with cider apple chutney, chips with curry Source, baked Cheddar etc.). We didn't eat but it all looked great.

A lot of negativity on this forum but speak as you find I thought it was great when we went there. I'll be going back for lots of other rugby/football events, but might give it a miss on Matchdays if certain areas are roped off for WAGS.

So, @TETBURY MASSIVE is a WAG? I want to know who she is shagging? I'm going for Flint - then having a massive punch up with @Dollymarie and @Strawberry2157. about who loves him the most

Flint to sign for Boro in January to get away from it all

All 'in my opinion', of course....

I'm not a she you cheeky****.... I dont need to behave like that to get where I am..... ;)

First time I've been called a WAG mind, but I did enjoy it in the WAG section. :clapping:

It's times like this you really find out who loves to find a reason to moan.

The food is 'pretentious'. Why is it pretentious? Have you tried it? How does it rank against the cold pies of last season?

The SC&T bar is 'exclusive'. It's strange how this has only become an issue now when it's been running for decades isn't it? It's not a case of refusing entry to 'normal' fans; it's a set-aside, designated space, as it always has been. If the original bar isn't big enough then that's the club's look-out.

It costs from just £1 a month for adults (see here for list of benefits for each type of membership). Membership for kids is just £5 a year.

After the War, the Supporters Club did a great deal to help City access the steel to expand the main grandstand (latterly called the Williams). As a gesture of thanks, Harry Dolman provided the SC with a bar in the stand for their members to socialise and carry on theri fundraising activities for the football club. I understand that he was so keen that they should have this facility, that he gave it to them on a 99-year agreement at £1 a year.

Since then, due to various redevelopments of the ground the faciltiy has moved a number of times. The small area on the mezzanine (capacity for SC&T members yesterday was just 50) is in effect the continuation of Harry Dolman's generous appreciation of the value that an organised supporters group can bring to the football club.

Just in case anyone is tempted by the great offer of membership at £1.00 per month..... You'll get a membership card and a newsletter, not access to the select upstairs club.

And with respect you are totally missing my point. The idea of providing a bar for fans is outdated now and unnecessary.     Robbored has written on here that there hasn't been a financial incentive to drink at this bar for a while now. I think it should be a new bar with all areas open to all. Wags etc should have an area within the corporates. The ST&C should be offered a place to have meetings, talks or whatever they want within the stadium. With the new build it would have been a perfect time to discourage the use of separate facilities.

I am in no way knocking the work done by the SC&T, they do a lot for the club and have raised money to commission statues, end of season awards etc and long may they continue to do so.

Hadn't actually been replying to your original post but I'll take your points...

WAGS are not corporates; they had a separate area before, and they continue to do so. You and others are viewing it all as one bar, but logistically it isn't. Was it ever meant as just a financial incentive? RR has said it was intended to help members plan to raise funds and the like.

I am thinking for this season, until the Williams is rebuilt,  the Wags should have been housed within/nearby to the corporates. Yes I perhaps am viewing it as one bar, because in my mind that's what it should be for the reasons that I've stated.

From how I see it, after the war Harry Dolman said well done fans, thanks for the steel. Instead of drinking at your local pubs come and drink at the stadium, this is a reward for the next 99 years, you fans can have a place at the stadium. From what I understand from RR there was until a few years ago an incentive to sign up as the drinks were subsidised (by the club or more likely the membership fees I expect). This was discontinued when Lindleys took over the bars, again from what I understand. Over the past generation or so bars were put inside grounds, many local pubs closed down, things changed. Drinking is as diverse from a few people sitting and drinking on the Natch Wall to sipping champagne in the hospitality bars. Since Harry Dolman gave the 99 year lease the whole football experience has changed beyond recognition, what he put in place serves no purpose now.

As I said I am not against the group, and if the club needs a room on Matchdays to plan and raise funds as you state then as I have stated that should be made possible. There is classroom space for example not used by the Community Trust which could be used for this very purpose.

i doubt if we are going to agree on this, maybe it's me more than you. I don't like the divide of First Class Rail, VIP rubbish and other such things. Or maybe in this case it's simply a Coach One sort of thing.
