No. You don't. You are making a judgment based on media reports, not from those who were there, those who know him and those who know what happened.

For the record Lee spoke to me just 2 weeks ago and was very much looking forward to a good time in Marseille and expressed how he very much wanted to make sure he avoided any flashpoints, ie he was not out there for trouble.

Unfortunately, as many many innocent fans have testified to, there was a situation beyond control which fans had not purposely placed themselves into.

You sir, have zero understanding of what happened and shouldn't make such a judgement of an individual.

I do understand what happened, and I'll state again, despite England fans clearly not being the perpetrators of the trouble, they must take some responsibility.

I agree with @Harry

I can only assume that you must know Lee and have spoken to him about the situation he found himself in?

Picture this scenario, one side Russians are running at you - the other French police are firing tear gas at you. Bottles / chairs are being thrown at you - genuinely what would you do?

Just found this bit, if true have little sympathy.

England fan Lee Phillips, 23, from Taunton, has been jailed for one month after appearing in court in Marseille charged in connection with violence at the weekend.

He also received a two-year ban from France for "throwing bottles at a woman".

As that reads I would 100% agree with you

Sadly as others have alluded to - it's not all black and white.

Your choice.

Stand still get attacked and stabbed/slashed/stamped on.

Run the other way to the police and get beaten tear gased and or arrested. Months in jail/career threatened.

Or stay where you are and use the only thing available near you to protect yourself?

what would you do?  Because that is EXACTLY the situation  a very very large number of peaceful England fans found themselves in on Saturday.

You have a split second decision to make.

What seems to be emerging here is a picture where English fans are being arrested/charged/jailed for assaulting French nationals and French police, whilst no Russians as yet arrested for seriously assaulting English nationals.

Obviously I don't know the details, but 'throwing bottles at a woman' - that means he's got the accuracy of a sniper, presuming there are far less women than men out there

Slinging a bottle into a baying crowd is one thing, but having the ability to pick out the fairer sex is something else

Like I say, I don't know the situation, I don't know the bloke - I'd rather hear his side of the story. That just sounds a little too convenient to me

I don't know mate, just going on what Super pulled from the report. Sounds like she got what was coming if she was slinging them in the general direction of the English fans.....

Thought I read that he was throwing bottles at police, which if so he deserves prison. No matter how badly you think a police officers acting, it doesn't warrant that.

if he wasn't, let's hope the truth comes out and he doesn't suffer consequences for others actions.

I spoke to a couple of Sunderland fans inside the stadium on Saturday.

They had clearly seen action as one of them had a black eye and cuts all over his face.

They said the French police were picking up the bottles and throwing them back at the England fans.

The truth is already known but you won't find it in the press.

Thankfully someone somewhere has seen sense and he's been released and is back in the UK with no charges.

So this innocent lad has had unnecessary press intrusion (and his character falsely judged by all and sundry) for what amounts to nothing but protecting himself.

Sad when fellow football fans- especially fellow City fans- are so quick to do so.

Glad he's back safely.

The father of Alex Booth - one of the five arrested and jailed - is on the BBC News website criticising his son's arrest stating that he was with him the entire time and he did nothing.

Anyone who's ever experienced foreign policing will not be surprised by this or Lee's subsequent release.

To me it feels like the arrests are just token arrests to make it look like the police have some sort of handle on it. Let's face it, given the scale of what has been happening, arresting a 16 yr old for throwing a bottle is hardly going to stop there being any trouble in future.

Great news. Hopefully the Somerset County Gazette, amongst others, who've been quick to cover the story with pictures of his arrest, and another huge picture of his face from facebook will be equally quick to publicise the latest developments.

Eh? He's sunburnt scum, the scourge of the beautiful game

Stunning, absolutely stunning. I'm sure he then went on to congratulate the Orlando gunman. What a *****

As for my trip, it's off. The lad in our group who was bang up for it had a fb message from a friend last night, had been in Marseilles and had tickets for all group games, saying they were coming home. Backed up by a PM on here this morning, I'm gutted, but I know we've made the right choice

To anyone still over there, stay safe people. And if you don't feel safe, just come home. It's only a game of football, it's just not worth it

if he wants someone to sell his tickets to let me know!

id do anything to be back out there, regardless of the trouble. It IS avoidable, at the expense of a few hours in a pub, and I think the worst is over.

The video in the article is well worth a watch - the video was put together by a Rovers fan (not Jake!), but the guy speaking on camera is not one of ours.

I keep reading phrases like 'highly trained' and 'organised', but I've watched quite a few videos and all I can see is a bunch of blokes running down the road - or across the terraces - swinging random punches and kicks. The same as football hooligans always have done. I really don't think it's taking football violence to a new level, as some have claimed. I think it's just that we haven't really seen it in this country for years, so we've forgotten what it looks like.

Read the stories of people that were there, don't go by a few short videos. This was highly organised, epitomised by the flare that signalled the all out Assualt in the stadium.

Russian crews take part in the International hooligan total fighting championships v other groups from Belarus, Poland and Ukraine. It is televised! They have training camps and specialise in MMA.

Having travelled to Moscow to watch England I would say the Russians and other Eastern European nations have invented new forms of hooliganism such as fair fighting.

Some of Moscow Torpedeo's boys escorted Bristol City lads around Moscow for the night, they didn't touch a drop of alcohol, were genial hosts, 8am the next morning they turned up at the hotel " now we have a fight yes ...!"

Have you seen Collymores' vid where he says gangs suddenly appear then on a whistle command start attacking? I'd say that was pretty organised.

Add to small matter of wearing go-pros , carrying bum-bags containing gum shields, weapons , MMA gloves etc etc

Id suggest high planning  which requires a great amount of organisation and training !

The Russians were organised alright, and the Marseille police utterly disorganised.

All they had to do was kettle 150 Russians but instead they let them cause havoc across the city all day.

Has a single Russian fan been nicked yet? I hear they've deported a coach load, but not nicked them and those that caused all the trouble in Marseille are 'still at large'. How has that been allowed to happen?

It's not like they're difficult to spot either, built like bodybuilders, usually in hot pants and bum bags. And coming at you with a ******* chair.

Don't bank on it Noggers. I've just seen a report on bbc news which still peddles the lies. Points West reporting his sentence at 10:30 tonight, when he was released without charge over 24 hours ago. He's been vilified and his photo in every paper and media outlet, but hasn't done anything. I'm sure they won't be apologising.

Just been at Portugal-Iceland in Saint Etienne. For those going to the Slovakia game who need to get the train back to Lyon afterwards, they use a queuing system similar to the one at the Millennium Stadium, and just load you on to the next train. We've actually ended up on an earlier train than we'd booked for which is a bonus! You will need a ticket as they were checking them coming in to the station.

Let's hope he takes them to the cleaners with a decent lawyer. Should pay for his trip.

Interesting the Biased Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) were reporting an hour or so ago that English fans launched unprovoked attacks on the Russians today. What with the recent migrant stories, I've now lost any remaining faith in that  organisation. Get rid as far as I'm concerned.  The 'news' reporting is just utter trash and propoganda. Can't wait to see their reaction to a leave vote victory.

Thankfully,  Sky News and all the papers have now woken up to what's going on in France  and reporting it as such.

Might well have been on the same train as you back into Lyon.   Cracking day in Saint-Etienne with 10+% of Iceland's population.   Lovely ground and a good match.

Cheers for the tip. Really looking forward to going back to St Etienne next Monday 18 years after I last saw England there (in what remains, to this day, the best atmosphere I've ever experienced at a football match). As One Team In Keynsham says above, it's a really decent ground to watch football in.

No thanks was the answer provided over the hotels telecom. There was no untoward reaction. Similar happened to other fans of other clubs following England. It was an amusing anecdote from an enlightening trip. The English drink am and pm, make a lot of noise, wave their arms around and its viewed as hooliganism. The Russians don't drink, stay sober, and are training to fight. That is pub drunks v boxers.

Interesting indeed. Although I think you're painting a slightly rose-tinted view about the English fans. Certainly England fans of the past have displayed some appalling violence, and even the current crop have been fighting, throwing chairs and bottles, and basically leaving Marseille looking lije a rubbish dump. I would say that definitely classes as hooliganism

Of course there are no fat Frenchmen who sing La Marseillaise and clap themselves when they finish.

I do not understand the stereotype that every Englishman who sings GSTQ is a fat, beer swilling monster. I sing it with gusto and I couldn't be more opposite to that stereotype.

If I recall, you are of Irish descent, but you won't find me criticising the bland, boring non-descript excuse of an Irish anthem.
