I totally get the risk v reward argument, and when it comes off it's brilliant, but he's a much better player than those numbers suggest. And he can still play outstanding knocks without going gung-ho from the start, think Headingley 2019 as the prime example. Last summer I watched him get a hundred at Old Trafford against South Africa which was a masterclass in pacing an innings, pretty risk-free until he got to 50 but still scoring freely enough, then he went through the gears to get to 100 and beyond and it was wonderful to watch. 1 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Just make an innings every once and a while, get a few steady 50s and not an amazing 135 one day and nothing for 6 months. Root Looks quality averages over 50 at 56.2 SR while Ben Stokes averages under 36 at 58.8 SR , Stokes looks like he's thrashing at it while Root never looks hurried. I just think if he just let himself build an innings , with his quality Stokes should average much higher.
