Burnley away match thread

Recommended Posts

Good day fellow-Reds. While it’s always great to be a City fan there are times when that is especially true and I certainly feel that way at the moment. Our performances this season have been a joy to watch. Even in the games we have lost we were in the mix for at least a point.

For the first time in five years a trip to Turf Moor for City fans beckons. Here’s a couple of guides to the ground:

and https://www.tottenhamhotspur.com/media/27596/burnley-visitors-guide.pdf

There is no pay on the day available.

Burnley have played their home games at Turf Moor since 1883, after playing at its original ground at Calder Vale for less than a year.

Here’s a flashback to 12/13 which involves late goals and even penalties!

A Burnley pre-match preview: https://www.nonaynever.net/podcast/the-preview-show-bristol-city-home/

On the final day of last season they lost 2-1 at home to Newcastle, while Leeds beat Brentford 2-1 away, which condemned Burnley to the drop, they finished with 35 points. https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/teams/burnley and https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/av/football/61538173

Burnley used to have the record for the longest unbeaten run in  league history in 1921, having gone 30 matches without a defeat until the record was broken by Arsenal in the 2004/05 season.

Burnley’s mascot is a bee named Bertie.

Their claret and the blue kit was inspired by the great Aston Villa team of 1910.

Turf Moor was the first professional soccer ground to be visited by a member of the Royal Family when Prince Albert visited in 1886.

In January 2021 American firm ALK Capital acquired a controlling share of the club. Recent media reports suggest they have some questions to answer, https://m.allfootballapp.com/news/EPL/Burnley-face-EFL-investigation-over-claims-that-clubs-American-ownership-are-not-actually-in-charge/2903520

Earlier this year Vincent Kompany replaced Sean Dyche, who had been at the helm since 2012, this clip discusses how is changing things:

Kompany began his professional career at Anderlecht; having graduated from their youth system, he was with the club for three seasons as a first team player before moving to Bundesliga club Hamburg in 2006. In the summer of 2008, he completed a transfer to Manchester City, where he established himself as an integral part of the squad and was regarded as one of the bargain buys of the revolutionised City era, blossoming into one of the league's best centre-backs. In the 2011–12 season he was awarded the captaincy of City, leading his club to win the Premier League that season, their first league title in 44 years. Kompany was included in the Premier League Team of the Year for two years in a row in 2011 and 2012 as well as being included in the 2014 team, and won the Premier League Player of the Season in 2012, and is regarded as one of the best defenders in English football history.

Kompany earned 89 caps for Belgium in a fifteen-year international career, having made his debut in 2004 at the age of 17. He was part of their squad that came fourth at the 2008 Olympics as well as going to the FIFA World Cup in 2014 and 2018, coming a best-ever third at the latter. He was captain from 2010.

In 2019, when his contract expired after 11 years at City, Kompany returned to Anderlecht as player-manager. A year later, he announced his retirement from professional football and became the first-team manager.

Total spent: £21.7m, total received: £72.5m, net transfer balance: £50.8m

In January 2020 we sold them midfielder Josh Brownhill who joined on a four-and-a-half-year contract for around £9m. Although City boss Lee Johnson was reluctant to lose his then 24-year-old captain, who he brought to Ashton Gate in 2016 after working with him at Barnsley. Johnson told BBC Radio Bristol: "I felt like I was selling my son, if I'm honest. "I'm very, very proud of Josh, signing him for the fee that we did, developing him in every element of his life - let alone his football game - and seeing him then flourish in to one of the best, if not the best, attacking midfelders or number eights in the Championship.”

In a separate transfer deal Nahki Wells moved in the other direction joining us on a three-and-a-half year contract, with City paying in the region of £5m.

The game will be refereed by Oliver Langford whose last Burnley game was the League Cup penalty shoot-out win at Newcastle last season. Fourth official will be Bobby Madden.

In the week they drew 1-1 at Deepdale. They have now drawn five times this term, with only goal-shy Preston and West Bromwich Albion drawing more at this stage (six.)  We remain the only team in the Championship to have scored in every game. Both them and us are on 14 points. They can be relatively satisfied with their position at present, but Vincent Kompany will be rueing several missed opportunities already this season, having dropped points in six of their opening nine matches.

They have won each of their previous three home meetings against us, scoring nine goals in the process. We have lost each of our last five encounters with Burnley and have drawn a blank in front of goal in our last two visits to Turf Moor.

Our overall head to head record is close we’ve won 16, lost 18 and drawn 15.

Pubs and food

Visiting fans are generally advised to avoid the pubs in the town centre. Several away fans have enjoyed a pre-match drink in The Bridge, in Bank Parade, about a 10-minute walk from Turf Moor, which reportedly has an excellent atmosphere, serving good beer and food. https://www.facebook.com/pages/category/Pub/The-Bridge-Bier-Huis-215963225139164/

Another option is the Queen Victoria (Brewers Fayre) on the road of the same name, a similar distance from Turf Moor. https://www.brewersfayre.co.uk/en-gb/locations/lancashire/queen-victoria?cid=GLBC_location41516365

Close to the ground, the 110 Club, a private members’ club on Yorkshire Street, admits away fans for a nominal fee, serves reasonably-price food and welcomes children. https://www.facebook.com/Ksc110Club

The Burnley Cricket Club, adjacent to the ground, also welcomes visiting fans. https://www.burnleycricketclub.com

For the best pies in Burnley seek out Haffners:  http://www.haffners.co.uk/?fbclid=IwAR0E-aLAA9fmY2vMQYC_4GK6m5If34D_iCqAwt41BXPy_U-xe8mgVEY6g8E They are widely available from places listed here: http://www.haffners.co.uk/stockists/

Burnley banter

  • In summer 1992, the town came to national attention following rioting on the Stoops and Hargher Clough council estates in the south west of the town.
  • “Burnley" was a poem by John Cooper Clarke who stated "Im telling you this and Im telling you firmly you don't ever want to go to Burnley" Sadly he didn't write one about Hucking.
  • Famous Burnley people include: James Anderson, Judith Hart, Lee Dixon, Ron Greenwood, Steven Burke. Possibly the best-known Burnley figure in the field of entertainment is actor and gay rights activist Sir Ian McKellen who was born in the town in 1939.
  • The name Burnley is believed to have been derived from Brun Lea, meaning "meadow by the River Brun".
  • The river Brun is the shortest river in Britain and runs through Burnley.
  • Bénédictine and hot water, known locally as "Bene 'n' Hot" is a popular drink in east Lancashire, after soldiers stationed in Normandy during the First World War brought back a taste for the drink. The Burnley Miners' Club is the world's largest consumer of the French liqueur, and has its own Bénédictine Lounge.
  • The Singing Ringing Tree is a wind powered sound sculpture resembling a tree, set in the landscape of the Pennines, it is two miles (3.2 km) south of Burnley town centre.

With the International break coming up next let’s cheer the boys onto a victory and go into the break with 17 points from 10 games. A special thank you to all traveling fans, IMO our away support this season has yet again been superb. COYR!

Effing useless ref.  Been in my bottom three for most of the last few seasons.  He had a little uplift during NCC (No Crowd Covid) which to me says he’s too influenced by the stuff outside of what is happening on the pitch, including who is the bigger team, and who might scrutinise him.

I really do expect him to give them soft decisions tomorrow, whilst not giving us much at all.  I hope not, but that is how he refs.  And that makes him a bad ref.

We seem to be playing well enough at the moment to get a decent result at Burnley if we can avoid the silly mistakes we have been making at the back.  Maybe a safety first approach is needed from our defenders at the moment.

Not heard anything about fitness and availability so assume we have a full squad to pick from other than long term absentees.  Expecting to be unchanged again, though he might not want Williams having too much game time.
