Rotherham away match thread

Recommended Posts

A midweek trip to the New York Stadium for some. Pay on the day will be available. Tickets will remain on sale from City until 11am on the morning of the game with prices rising by £2 per ticket if bought at The Aesseal New York Stadium. While for others it can be viewed on Sky.

Anybody willing to stick with Robins TV (given the last two attempts) should be aware of this which includes a long list of countries where it will not be available: https://www.bcfc.co.uk/city-men-news/rotherham-on-robins-tv-in-selected-overseas-countries/

On Saturday they lost 2-0 away at Cardiff. They currently occupy 23rd place with 1 win, 2 draws and 6 defeats, with 8 goals for and 19 against.

We did the double over them last season, winning 3-1 away https://youtu.be/VNZ_jcNZlfA

and 2-1 at AG thanks to Andi’s 91st minute goal, his 50th for us, https://youtu.be/iBh9RIohLsY

https://youtu.be/GULOo7F1GbA

They ended last season on 50 points in 19th place.

Ground guide: https://footballgroundguide.com/leagues/england/championship/new-york-stadium-rotherham-united.html

They are offering bring a friend for a fiver so there might be a decent crowd.

They are hopeful that midfielder Cafu and centre-half Grant Hall will be available following injury.

Gerry Gow played for both teams and as well as being a City legend he is also a Millers' legend. He was sent off within two minutes of his home debut against Derby on 2/2/82, a game Rotherham went on to win 2-1 which started a record run of eight wins in the month of February and nine wins in total. That run catapulted them from the old Division 2 relegation fodder to promotion hopefuls in a season where they came almost as close to getting to the top tier as they have ever done. Gerry missed a penalty in a 2-2 draw at Millmoor against Luton which contributed to their downfall. Whenever RUFC are in need of a hard man in midfield, anyone who followed them back then will say "we need a Gerry Gow type of player".

Other players who have represented both clubs - John Galley (who scored 84 goals in 172 games for us), Shaun Goater, Ryan Taylor and Martin Scott.

Head-to-head record

Won: 22

Lost: 24

Drawn: 10

Officials

Referee: Dean Whitestone. In the seven games he has been in charge of this season he has shown twenty-four yellow cards and one red. Running the line will be Daniel Leach and Alex James and the Fourth Official will be Sam Barrott.

Rotherham facts

  • In October last year they appointed Matt Taylor as their first team manager. The former Grecians boss joined on a three-and-a-half year deal. He was missing from the dugout when they played Cardiff last weekend, having picked up three yellow cards.
  • They are nicknamed the Millers because of the association between the area and flour milling which gave their old stadium its name, Millmoor.
  • Rotherham is a large market and minster town in South Yorkshire. The town takes its name from the River Rother which then merges with the River Don. The River Don then flows through the town centre. It is the main settlement of the Metropolitan Borough of Rotherham. Rotherham is also the third largest settlement in South Yorkshire after Sheffield and Doncaster, which it is located between.
  • Traditional industries included glass making and flour milling. Most around the time of the industrial revolution, it was also known as a coal mining town as well as a contributor to the steel industry.
  • The Feoffees of the Common Lands and Rotherham were an early 16th Century council that came about after the dissolution of monasteries. Made up of twelve townsfolk, they helped the poor, administered justice on criminals, and maintained roads and infrastructure. This council is now a charity working in the borough for good causes including helping the elderly.
  • The Jesus College was the first ever brick-built structure in South Yorkshire.
  • Rotherham is the home town of Jive Bunny, the chart-topping rabbit from the late 80s.
  • It is home of the Chuckle brothers.
  • The cannons used in Lord Nelson’s victory at the Battle of Trafalgar were made in Rotherham.
  • The Chapel of Our Lady bridge chapel was once a tobacconist and newsagent from 1888 to 1901 before a petition from locals forced it to be converted back to a religious building again.

Famous fans include:

  • Dean Andrews - Actor.
  • Paul Chuckle - Chuckle brother.
  • Howard Webb - Former referee.

New York is an area in Rotherham

I'm looking for 3 points, especially after Saturday.

Rotherham are the kind of team we should be reasonably confident to beat, even at their place, if we have serious thoughts even about the top 10 imo. They have 3 losses and 1 draw in the last 4 - I think we've got a good chance and will beat them.

Looks like Tanner & Sykes are very doubtful so presumably that means starts for TGH & Weimann but also reduces the capacity for changes elsewhere as I cannot see for instance King starting in place of Williams.

Excellent result there last season, could do with a repeat tomorrow after Saturday’s disappointment.

The match day threads are often a bit disappointing, but not due to @Jerseybean’s efforts. It’s because of the head to head record - ie against Rotherham it’s:

Won: 22

Lost: 24

Drawn: 10

Having this sort of record is a reminder of City’s life of mediocrity over the last 100 years, interspersed with the few seasons of hope

The famous New York red fire hydrants were also made on Don St next to the stadium. Not sure if the area is called New York for this reason though.

I was going to post earlier that there really was a connection with New York, but, for the life of me, I couldn’t remember exactly what it was.

I was going to suggest it was manhole covers, and actually looked it up, but was wrong, and it has been bugging me since this morning.

Well Done for remembering - and putting me out of my misery.

Hi Guys, Millers fan here & I think you'll have a harder game than a lot of you City fans expect.

Basically we're struggling because we're pony away from home but our home form is decent...ish

Blackburn H 2-2 Got shafted by Bobby Madley after he sent one of our players off for two yellows, first for over celebrating his goal & the second for waving the card sign after he was fouled, we were 2-0 up at the time.

Leicester H 1-2 Played well, Hugill goal disallowed, McAteer scored an 87th min winner

Norwich H 2-1 Played them off the park & should have won by more

PNE H 1-1 Decent performance against the then league leaders

Anyone who thinks any game in the Champ is easy, especially for us, is mad.

Most of us take no result for granted, home or away.

re Hugill’s goal, your defender was offside (stood right in front of the GK) from the flick before Hugill bundled it in.

Sounds like you’re quite confident?  FWIW we have been decent away from home, so it’ll be a good one then!!!

I'd hardly describe myself as confident, I'm 90% sure we'll be relegated mainly because we're too defensive & ineffective on the road AND because money talks, we simply cannot compete with parachute payment clubs OR well established Championship clubs financially. We are basically a good L1 club that happens to be in the Championship but we will give you a game & win lose or draw put in a shift. Good luck for the season guys.

Should be an interesting game and a close one I expect as you say. Your home form has been okay tbh and was not bad last year.

As a Rotherham fan I may as well ask, why is it that Taylor has signed a significantly higher profile of player than Warne did?

Players such as in January Hjelde, Blackett, Coventry, Fosu, Hugill in January. Did your owner back Warne to the level that he should.

Still not totally convinced by that Hugill disallowed goal but that's a me issue.

Hjelde, Coventry & Fosu were all short term loans & have since departed

We did break our transfer record twice in the same week in the summer (still peanuts to most Ch clubs) in bringing in Cafu from Forest & Nombe from Exeter, also Sean Morrison, Sam Clucas, Fred Onyedinma & Grant Hall in so the chairman has certainly tried his level best.

Likewise.

Was a big fan of what Warne did you keep getting you promoted on a low budget.  And I like Taylor a lot, followed him because of Exeter.  Looking forward to seeing how Sam Nombe progresses, having been a huge, huge fan of Ogbene.  Also liked Barlaser, Wiles and Crooks previously too.

Coming off the back of two defeats and a nasty trip to Leeds to follow, tonight is very important......not a good time to lose 4 in a row..(not that it ever is)

Don’t you know , if your ever on a losing run , ideal scenario play us

if we played Cheltenham in the cup and they still not scored , you know what would happen in the 2nd minute don’t you ,
