Yep, bloody depressing this football lark. I doubt I'll ever see us in the Prem, but seeing what has happened to Burnley and Sheff Utd this season, it all seems pretty pointless.

Clubs who spend £100m after promotion are still £100m short of the squad value of those in 17th

Tommy is still raw , get him to sign a new contract, and develop him further. He is young, his family and friends are here in Bristol and he is getting first team action. Not that difficult a sell, if you have a desire to be better

There's no way Tommy signs a new contract even if we sack Manning, even if Pearson was still here. He's highly ambitious and he'll want to achieve his goals of playing at the highest level possible whether that's signs for Rangers or Celtic getting European football, somehow a PL club signing him as a squad player or signing for one of the bigger Championship teams who'll help him by utilising his skill set better then we are all of which help his chances of getting to the Scotland senior squad or the PL more than signing a new contract here, the reality frankly is that Tommy will be gone in the summer.

We do not have FFP concerns at present, ask poppy

And I’d agree with not selling if the player in question (Conway) didn’t only have 1 year left on his contract after this season, we won’t want to lose him for compensation as it’s highly unlikely we’d be in position to compete for play offs next season so gambling and keeping Tommy is unlikely to do anything other than lose us a good few million we could reinvest.

Reckon we don't need to now until 2026 provided we don't go nuts.

Scott was the last..albeit let us see how some other clubs are dealt with as I've a feeling others trajectories to this year or beyond have worsened or are set to.

The past losses have overhung but TV money up this year although bizarrely seem Birmingham fans seem to think it is set to double ie up £8-9m, they clearly haven't extrapolated Solidarity Payments from regular TV deal. £2-2.5m increase iirc.

Point being though Conway staying is not the difference to put us in a position to challenge for top 6, then we don’t want to lose him for just compensation, so it points to selling him in the summer, if he had 2 seasons left sure don’t sell him but he doesn’t

Same old , same old. After Scott last year ( Semenyo scored again) , Conway this , who do you fancy next , how about Knight.
    And the club goes nowhere.

Our medical team are fine as far as I know, but who knows , perhaps we can get a few bob for them too

Weirdly we have to sell players to meet FFP restrictions unless you want us to significantly decrease our wage budget

Change “Conway” to “Scott” and you could cut and paste this whole paragraph in to last year’s debate on here about Alex. And that as worked well, hasn’t it!!!!

Using this logic, we never progress, sometimes you need some balls ⚽⚽⚽

We were never holding onto Scott, you deny him a move to the PL given the level of interest he had and the fees we would have been offered you'd have pissed him off no end, I don't think Alex would have been the type to down tools but you run that risk, equally his sale put a good cushion in our finances which obviously would have been nice for Nige to have been allowed to spend but was equally almost neccessary, Conway you don't have the length of contract that Scott had and I don't see the squad in a position where keeping Conway around (regardless of who head coach is) that pushes us into being a top 6 team. Also how well would our medical department have dealt with Alex's injury he had early season?

Managers are temporary, the club is permanent, so NO , I don’t expect Tommy Conway to be moved on, I do hope that Manning is instead.

Last year it was all about moving on Scott, now, predictably it’s Tommy. FFS will this club, and sadly some of our supporters get some ambition .

    See you all in August.

Realism is a thing, if we want to get a fee for Conway, rather than compensation which won’t be much and minimal if he went to Scotland, then he needs to be sold this summer as he won’t be signing a new deal

    Thought it was £4k?

Anyway despite some thinking it made sense, to me at a time when we had Bentley, O’Leary & Wollacott, it completely blocked the pathway of the latter & was a waste of money.

He was effectively deputy goalkeeping coach & 3rd choice keeper at best, pointless.

Someone mentioned Lewis Thomas, all I’d say there is our deputy keeper now (Bajic) is far less experienced than Max, who understudied Bentley so although I’m not sure I’d bother, there’s a bit more logic.

There was never an intention of him ever stepping on a pitch for us he was a training keeper who did some coaching as well, therefore there was no way he could block a pathway for us. Johnson always wanted 4 goalkeepers for every session, this often meant academy keepers being involved however this would often see them miss match days for 18’s/21’s just to be in sessions, which is more pointless hiring a keeper to fill that gap or stop your young keepers getting game time?

Still a lot init. Thomas will be on less than half of that I’d guess.

My guess is it won’t be proportionally too different to what the rest of the wage bills were comparatively, it was just a case of where we as a club and football in general was at the time

A very amusing 180 degree turn as Brendon McCullum asks for Somerset and Lancashire to play on spinning pitches to aid England’s young spinners.

Small problem, last time we had two England spinners and played on pitches that helped them we got called cheats and ended up getting deducted points.

Can we get our points back? 🤣

I have only been on a 3G a couple of times, but my thoughts are that there is probably a very wide spread in terms of quality.

A newly laid 3G is a fantastic asset for young players as discussed, with matches one after another all week long and a decent realism to grass. At the other end of the scale an old astro pitch which was probably laid with hockey in mind might as well be tarmac.

Its an issue in hockey atm, schools/leisure centres wanting to lay 3g pitches maximising football income but meaning hockey wouldn't be able to be played there any more.

Of all the on-the-grass coaches we chose one that plays a fundamentally different style to the “job spec”?

You’re gonna have to try harder to explain the logic of that? 🤷🏻‍♂️

So you’re saying they outwardly specified they wanted to recruit an on-the-grass coach to play the style I suggested above that I can’t be bothered to type again (as I find it a bit insulting 😉), and ended up with an on-the-grass coach to play completely different?

The only common ground was the on-the-grass bit?

This was a LM that said he wasn’t fixed in his thinking too!

This is a triangle of “porkies” between hierarchy / Head-coach / fans!!!

He was primarily recruited because he's an on the grass coach.

The play style bit also is obviously a big factor but we could have recruited an on the grass coach with different styles of play but we chose Manning with his style.

Clearly a better coach than player.

Absolutely embarrassing that we ever signed him, peak waste of money era signing under LJ.

He did exactly what we was signed for, provide an extra keeper for training and then coach in the academy

    Was he?

I thought JL and Tins specified - front foot, high press, forward thinking, attacking football

    Which of those match?

He is a - modern on-the-grass coach though

I’m not being facetious either.  He did not match the description of the style of football they wanted.  It’s buzzword bollox.  That’s not to say he is or isn’t a good head-coach.

Even LM himself uses some of those buzzwords, e.g. high-press, but he’s not being 100% truthful to them.

You don't recruit a head coach as fixed in their way as Manning if you're not comfortable with them bringing their style of football with them as well, regardless of whether it being the on the grass style coach that is the main point you want.

New season, normal service resumed. Yawn fest here we go.

    I miss F1 of old.

What just over half a second separating 1st and 9th? Max didn't even have the quickest lap in the 3 sessions, his lead in Q3 would have been the slipstream off Piastri he got starting his lap.

I will say I'll be very disappointed if Ferrari don't have this blasting out, horny Horner it seems

I’m not saying that’s wrong as such, but it does support the narrative of Manning forcing the squad to bend to his style, rather than him bending to the players he has.

Why would he bend his style? He was brought in for his style

  17. Thought Tommy's answer to the contract question was absolutely fine, personally I don't think he will sign but he's not going to commit one way or another to a question mid season so he batted it away comfortably.

Watching the clip of them passing it hard along the strip, are they deliberately trying to make the reciever miscontrol the ball? If so, how is this beneficial?

Its a game by the looks of it, if the player miscontrols it and the ball goes out of the lines they’re eliminated, the risk for the passer is too much power over control and you risk passing outside the lines and you’re eliminated. So the game focuses on the how quickly/accurately can you pass the ball as well as your ability to receive heavy passes under pressure

Looks like we've been strengthening links with Weston of late which I'm pleased with. Wish we'd have sent Yeboah down here.

Why would we send someone to Weston over Bath if Bath want them? Jerry Gill has been very good for a lot of our younger players and he's in a promotion push rather than a season thats fizzling out.

Oh well… I guess, like Ayling, he can’t have been doing it in training.

He certainly wasn't doing it in U21's games when he was given the chance to impress

Frankly he needed those seasons in L1 to improve himself, only thing we could have said was for us to loan him out instead of sell.

With our season fizzing out why not keep him here and give him minutes?

He can always return from the loan at Bath, for the here and now he gets competitive first team minutes.
