General people psyche is to not want to admit you were wrong.

    As I posted earlier:

    - I thought we jumped to gun on Holden (especially when Ashton announced he was leaving)

    - I though Pearson would be just the appointment we needed

There are aspects Pearson deserves credit for, and he might be the equivalent of SOD, couldn’t get it right on the pitch, but got stuff going behind the scenes that laid the foundations, for Cotts and LJ.

I had hoped that we were more rebuilding from an equivalent of 16/17 than 12/13…it’s all a bit gutting isn’t it.

Happy for my initial thoughts to be wrong, but I’d rather watch and evaluate, rather than come up with stuff like, we will be bottom three by Xmas type stuff.

I haven't given up on this season yet. Before the last international break most on here we're content. Most of it relates to player availability - if we can get Williams fit, Baker and James back soon then things could pick up again. You only have to look at Villa, without Grealish they have turned into relegation candidates and Smith has been made the scapegoat

You can’t blame anyone for wanting Pearson though can you, on paper it is/was the perfect appointment. Isn’t working out for whatever reason but i still stand by wanting him at the time.

You're right it looked like a good appointment yet apparently the board messed up by taking him on, they seem to be the whipping boys despite people on here agreeing with them at the time. Or is it just people on OTIB can't admit they were wrong and look for someone else to blame?

Unfortunately gets it wrong when it counts. MA, LJ, etc.

Cotts was a Dawe appointment iirc.

SL was in charge when Cotts became manager so must have appointed him. It wasn't all bad under LJ, he actually did as well as anyone at this club in the 2nd tier if you think about it, at least we were never in danger of relegation which hasn't been the case with virtually every other manager we've had (apart from his dad).

And being objective how much of that has been completely wasted due to at best naivety and worst downright incompetence?

Not much, most of it went on the stadium and I don't hear anyone complaining about that. The trouble is we don't get enough income to pay Championship wages, that's why SL has to subsidise the club every season.

I've taken some time to let the win settle in, and have reflected on it today.

Honestly it just reminds me ever so much of the Huddersfield home game towards the end of Holden's time, in January 2021.

We'd lost 5 of the previous 7, including losses to Rotherham, Luton, and the limp 2-0 away loss to Norwich.

Huddersfield laid siege to our goal, 27 shots to our 4. xG of 2.6 to our 0.5. It was a brutal watch and we won thanks to a quickfire first half brace from our striker (Diedhiou in that case). Huddersfield hit the woodwork several times, and we rode our luck, just as we did yesterday. At the time there was jubilation from some, and claims of a dramatic corner being turned. I counseled caution and restraint, as the win had been very poor.

We then lost our next 5 games, and Holden went.

I get that I'm being a slight party-pooper in this post, and I am not saying that I think or hope we will repeat that 5 game streak. I'm not even saying the games themselves were similar. However the context, the reactions, and the general themes are similar. Hence I feel there are more cracks being papered than corners turned.

That win against Huddersfield was our last home win before the Barnsley game. Let's hope for a convincing home win soon.

    Agree and disagree.

In many ways I agree with your post but and this isn't to knock SL at all, a) Covid lost revenue is excluded from FFP and b) If the owner is willing and able they can make good the shortfall and keep financing to pre Covid levels, subject to FFP of course. Stoke perhaps an example?

Also the loss for all clubs in, 2019/20 and 2020/21 is added and then halved.

I don't understand what a) is? How is 'lost revenue' calculated and is it then taken off our annual loss as used for FFP?

Yeah true about some of those players being under LJ that are not here now.

But I disagree that this is a bottom half squad. Performances have been for sure and should be lower than 16th imo as we've had some amazing luck in games we have deserved to lose or not win. People will say how about the last minute goals we conceded, that's not bad luck imo. I think we deserved to concede those goals.

Individually on ability many of these players would be snapped up by decent championship sides if we were to let them go imo.

Looking at quality of players in all the teams in the championship I don't see why we should be struggling. Not saying we are in a relegation battle, but we are struggling to perform and who knows if we don't start playing better that is certainly a possibility, though even I think that won't happen as long as we don't get too many more injuries.

Like I said yesterday, Forest had 1 point in 7 games and were bottom of the table under Hughton. Since sacking him with the exact same players they have won 5, drawn 1, lost 0.

They have the same players that Hughton had, I assume they haven't had the chance to sign anyone as the window had shut when Hughton was sacked.

It shows what good coaching using a different approach can do. Turning a team that look like they might go down into the top in form side in the division.

It is early to be too harsh on Pearson. It's not all been bad. And we really need Williams and Semenyo back. But I do wonder what approach a different manager would have gone with.

For example Mark Robins would have had us playing very differently I'm sure. Not saying sack Pearson, but just using that as an example that the managers approach is the biggest thing which I have not always been impressed with so far about Nige.

Really hope he improves things as I do like him. Knowing us we will probably go and get a decent result in our next game and then lose and look awful at home to a struggling Barnsley! ?

Remember that when Holden first took over we were top of the league for a while, new manager "bounce" doesn't always equate to long term success.

  8. Can't see us getting anything other than defeat but I expect a decent performance, perhaps in the game for a while and going down 3-1. The feeling was so bad after the Forest game it might just give us the impetus to win at home next time, we weren't that bad generally just for the last 10 minutes or so and the substitutions didn't help, I wouldn't have picked COD or Palmer to see out a pressure situation.

It may be a similar point in the season to the game we had at the end of a terrible run of results when GJ first took over in L1. I remember we reached the lowest point when 0-4 down to Chesterfield at home at HT. In the 2nd half the crowd got behind the team and we scored 2 goals to finish 2-4 when it looked like it could have been 0-7 or 8 earlier. After that we started a long unbeaten run and then got promoted the season after, here's hoping for similar now.

  9. I still don't understand why he lost form after we got promoted to Div 2. At the time people thought maybe he was just a great Div 3 player and couldn't make the step up but he showed at WBA he was just as good at that level, we really missed out there somehow.

I was in my teens nd I remember that night so well. The night started off a bit aggresive with me and my mate from Bris school encouraged his older brother to take us.

we were at an end of the ground full of City supporters on a lower level with Coventry fans above us. I remember so much shit thrown at us at it was a bit of a worry as we were only in our teens.

we sang and we sang and we sang and I will always remember that night.

I suppose we al have great memories of away matches and it depends on which era and who you went with and how important the match was at that time.

That was my second favourite away match after the Arsenal game the same season

You missed his goal saving tackle first half then?

COD was very good today. Some great crosses first half which players couldn’t get on the end of.  Lovely linking with Pring

That tackle did turn out good but I don't like defenders going to ground in the box unless it's a desperate situation, it could easily have ended differently. Agree he was our best attacking threat though.

I just wonder whether missing Pearson’s influence in the dressing room before the game and , in particular, at half time affected last night’s performance.

This is not a criticism of the job Fleming did, and he was forced into subs by injuries, which no doubt affected our options, but it does feel that Pearson has a big effect on the players and his nor being there in person could make a difference.

More like missing Massengo, Wells and Semenyo

  13. The Millwall game echoed the problems we had last season where without certain key players we struggled. Massengo is a big miss, and not having Wells or Semenyo as well limited our attacking options. Players like Bakinson wouldn't normally be starting, we may have to accept that we're going to slip down the table as injuries mount, it's not the fault of the coaching staff.
