  1. I saw Wayne Elliott playing in U 23 pre season friendly at Taunton the season after promotion. He was a tremendous help to Vyner, Kelly and O'Leary and also the rest of the side, none of whom made it to league status as far as I know.

    Very good idea.

  2. As an elder City fan who is quick to remember and praise the nostalgia of my young days in the late 1940's and 1950's, this is an astonishing example of how special training on Weston Beach and players who smoked 20 a day has developed into the present day.

It's easy to say that Pearson may take us to the Premier League but we should never forget those people in the background and their modern methods that are making it a real possibility. My great respects to Rennie, all the other backroom specialists an NP. Hoping that Nigel makes a full recovery from his latest bout of Covid. What a manager of people he is. Always WE and never ME.

To give us our full and proper name, as used by opposition fans,  we are Bristol We Should be Beating These) City.

As @Olé and @Davefevs have said, I’m sure we all want to see City stroking the ball around the park a la Man City. However, I also think we have to accept the reality of the sh1t hand that Pearson was dealt when he took on this job.

It’s a bit like the old joke when a motorist stops a farmer to ask the best way to wherever,  and the farmer replies “ well if I was going there  I wouldn't start from here”. If SL had told Pearson that he wanted a City team to play entertaining, attacking passing football, I suspect that Pearson would have said well I wouldn't start from this position - numerous players out of contract, a shambles on the pitch and demotivated and non-performing and mainly injured players.

However, start from there he had to, and his first step was to bring old hands in that he knew and trusted to bring experience and know how and that would influence the squad, with the right way to do things. Pearson has also put in place his plan, which I’m guessing was initially based on working with what he had, given the financial limitations, with an immediate priority  to change attitudes and mentality. I think that most agree that there has been a noticeable change in attitude, with a team going out showing grit and determination, so that we are no longer the soft touches of last season.

He’s said about Martin that he’s interested in what he can do, not what he can’t and I suspect he’s taken a similar view of other players, so has organised a way of playing that plays to our strengths, i.e. getting players to what they can do and not asking them to do what they can’t. It might not be giving us the sparkling football we ideally want, but it is certainly more effective and has made us a harder team to beat, but I’m hoping that we are currently seeing is only the first step along the road of developing Pearson’s own team, which I reckon will look a lot different, not just in personnel, but in playing style, even though it might take a while to get to that position.

While I never expected things to be as bad as the tale end of last season, I did expect us to be rattling around the bottom end of the table. That we are where we are is perhaps down to some luck along the way but also reflects the huge improvement Pearson has already made, and much quicker than I thought was possible. Now if he can just crack the home win jinx.......................

It doesn’t matter if there is only one midfielder who doesn’t score often, but it does matter if the entire midfield is bereft of goals, which was the point I was making. To be successful a team can’t just have a couple of good forwards. Most of the other players must chip in with a few goals here or there. That isn’t going to happen with the current crop of midfielders, good as they are.
Joe Williams - 2 league goals in 102 appearances

    H N M - 2 in 78

    James - 10 in 78

Semenyo - 8 in 93 (only 2 at Championship level)

The best, in terms of scoring are Weimann with 57 in 335, though a lot have come when he’s played as a forward, and O’Dowda with 57 in 335

There has been a lot of talk about the need to sign a 20 goals per season. We do, but we also need to sign a goal scoring midfielder. Put this new player with Williams, HNM, and James and we’d have a good midfield

Callum O'Dowda, career record according to Wikipedia.

    262 games. League/Cup/Internationals

    22 goals.

  5. I did not know him personally but like most of us, it feels like we've lost a brother or cousin. We all have to face it one day but until then just for John and his family, let's do it one more time.

    Come on you Reds!

  6. My question would be " Do you consider that the Board , including you, made a horribly wrong decision to employ Pulis instead of Moyes?"

With a follow up of "If you had recruited David Moyes at that time, do you now believe that City would have been a fixture in the Premier League if you had financially supported him as you did for another more recent City Head Coach?"

  7. He has put on a little weight and started shaving since that day back in 1982 when a tall skinny lad made his debut against Fulham. Yet another who could justifiably be called as Bristol City's finest. 100 plus per cent effort in every match I saw him play.

I know it is a great pitch. What I am saying is if we have another set of fixtures on the pitch it gives less time for ground keepers and what ever work they do between the current fixtures with extra games on the pitch.

Think you are jumping on a comment and taking it as though I am slagging the club off.

    @Littlesh*t

"Will cut up more". That sounds like it does now. Have you ever looked at it carefully after two matches on consecutive days in rainy weather? I have and it resembles a billiard table.

The Dessa pitch is very resistant to having lumps kicked out of it. There are pieces of polypropylene cord (or string) 20 centimetres long implanted vertically into the soil at 2cm in both directions. They protrude above soil by about 5mm. The purpose of them is for the grass roots to entwine with them. This minimises grass roots being kicked out of the ground. The green grass may go but as the roots remain, grass will grow again.

As for the old days when football was played in all weathers and became sodden due to poor drainage, the level of the pitch was raised by approx 35 cm with a totally new drainage system installed. So rainwater disappears from the surface very quickly.

Sorry if I sound overbearing but I made a point of reading the Desso data when the pitch was installed at a cost of £1.5 million. So City's pitch is up there with the best. One day we might match them in a game on it for season after season.

A propos MSN Messenger, I recall some years ago when my daughters started using this new service.

It seemed a bit complex, more for the youngsters if you like, so I never got to use it.

Unfortunately, now I have become relatively computer/smart phone savvy, it seems MSN Messenger has come and gone and left me behind.

Not to worry, I still have my fax and telex.

    No carrier pigeons?

I would also add we already have the rugby and football on there so another set of fixtures is going to cut up the pitch more I would have thought

    @Littlesh*t

If you are referring to the Ashton Gate pitch, we have had football and rugby on it since the new pitch was introduced about six years ago.

Have you seen it "cut up" at any time because me and many thousands of other City and Bears have not.

It is among the very best pitches in the country, superbly designed and maintained to an amazing standard by the ground staff.

  11. My eyes are damp at this news. I always thought of him as Liverpool's version of Atyeo. He played hard and fair with much more skill than he received credit for. I saw him a couple of times at Leicester City and Chelsea.

    Condolences to his family.

The ref could add on the time… I thought it was a lovely gesture. If it was on 93rd minute, you might have a case but the ref would just stop the clock…

Yes he could but when do they actually add enough?

One should also remember that a team is at it's most vulnerable of conceding, immediately after they score. Take a couple of minutes to go to the lad with our players itching to get going again without delay.

Followed by a slow walk back to positions and the last one to do that is always a striker who wanders across the centre circle - 20 yards of further delay.

Very cynical CA!  Bearing in mind Tim Ream had done an interview with him earlier in the week, and they’d added him to their squad….I think this shows the human side of football….and I’m all for it.

    @Davefevs

I knew that I would get some flack and be labelled cynical and to an extent you are correct.

If the Fulham team wanted to acknowledge the boy, they could have arranged it to be during their warm up or immediately after the game ended. Not during the game.

Clubs and players now use every method of breaking up the rhythm of the game especially when they are leading. It's overdone already!

    Well done Fulham!

You should not fall for that event. It's just another clever way of time wasting and delaying the restart of the match. Players are only allowed to leave the pitch during a match with the permission of the referee. Taking a corner, goal kick or throw in is not leaving the pitch.

There were two City players in offside position as the shot was made by a third City player in the lead up to the goal.

I think I'm correct that as soon as their keeper saved the shot, then those two become onside again because the ball then comes from the opposition not a City player.

A bit like the goal about three years ago when Taylor Moore headed a ball to a clearly offside opponent behind him.

I stand corrected by others that a save by a keeper still leave the player offside. So a big chunk of good fortune due to a visually challenged assistant referee, or Linesman as we all know them as. About time we got a break or two so add Mitrovic's abysmal finishing in the last few minutes.

I watched about 20 mins of each half.  Thought we looked a bit laboured out there, lacked any real pace.

We clearly are not spending enough on the quality of recruited players. Poor display today and would not be surprised if we sink again at the end of the season, unless better players are brought in.

Promising, but I think Kebano coming on showed the class he may struggle against at this level.

Why the negative view? He is young enough to learn and improve. A solid home debut and for a small fee, we have filled another weak spot.

He'll make mistakes but will improve.

Apologies if this has been posted before, but I just heard a re-run of Nigel’s post match interview on RB - he said something along the lines of, when he came to Ashton Gate as an opposing player or manager they never expected to face a tenacious or physical Bristol City team, then he said his current Bristol City team are tenacious etc - a damning indictment of our club from years gone by from a prominent and respected ex player and current, very successful, manager ...

I think NP, given three years or more, will be superb for our club ... he’s probably correct, we’ve never been streetwise or physical and whenever I highlighted sides who were, such as any team managed by Warnock, I was always shouted down - some fans seem to want us to be a soft touch with a soft underbelly - NP wants to change this - and I’m right behind him ...

As one who goes back to the Atyeo days, when Big John scored goals for fun without ever hurting a fly let alone big defenders, I wonder if his fifteen years of "Playing in a sporting manner" has been an influence on how we play.

Many City fans voice their disgust at the cheats like Warnock and their sides are here. Remember the ten minutes with a Rotherham player and serious head injury, followed by running straight back onto the pitch.

Pearson is correct. The game has changed and we must be more assertive than we have been for a long time. It doesn't mean cheating but a more legal aggressive attitude will prove beneficial to our performances and results.

  20. Great effort by everyone in "The Team"

By that I mean the playing squad, coaches, supporters, backroom medical staff, kit man and the one who hasn't used the first person singular since he arrived, preferring the first person plural instead.

He is the one who is running the show but one who is happy for everyone else to take the glory!
