He was on the pitch for just the final 10 minutes when City were mainly in defensive mode as WH tried to grab the winner but I guess in current otib mode that's long enough to start a thread on his performance.

Strange comment. You are saying he played more than 10% of the game but that isn't worthy of comment.  What is your allowed quota? 25%, 50% ...

I thought Wells was strangely subdued. It looked like he was nursing a hamstring injury such was his reluctance to even get into a run let alone a sprint.

PS The best defence against grabbing a winner starts up front.

    Went for legs imho.

Williams and TGH in CM was a good choice imho.

I do wonder if it’s a “changing of the guard” / sliding doors moment for Matty James?

I think that door has started to slide. James is getting less time now Manning is here. Likewise, for Weimann.

I was really worried when the subs were made as it took any pace out, and replaced it with ,well, not pace.

WHU started to come back into it after our subs although that might be a coincidence as they were always going to step up in the last 15 mins.

  3. West Ham Scouting Report just in...

    1. At some point, O'Leary will kick the ball straight to one of our forwards. If we aren't too surprised, we should be able to capitalise.
    2. For Vyner - see 1 above
    3. Let Tanner pass the ball. We will be 20 yards further up the pitch if he passes.
    4. Matty James has an impressive 96% pass success rate.  Let James pass the ball! In fact, don't even mark him... there's no threat here...
    5. Don't let Williams or Dickie shoot. Someone will have to get the ball back from the Westfield Shopping Centre.
    6. If Sam Bell plays, make sure the medical team have savlon as he will fall over and graze his knees.
    7. Conway recently appeared in a national newspaper article. Turns out it was for players most in need of a hug...
    8. Can we check the guy who does the score board knows how to get the left hand number into double figures?
    9. We can play the U12s against this lot but make sure they have had a good night's sleep as nothing in the game will keep them awake
    10. This lot are ****ing unless

Like last night, the twot who scored the equaliser, giving it the big one to the South Stand ! It leaves him wide open for feeling a total buffoon when they lose late on.           I can understand it if someone is getting pelters from the opposition and scores in the last minute, but I'm sure he wasn't getting anything, and it was still the first half ,plenty of time for them to **** up......which they did !

I was sat near to where he did this. Didn't seem to be any reason for it.   However, I thought that winding up opposition fans was a yellow card offence. Mind you, I thought that there is a 6 second rule, that standing in front of a free kick taker, and wasting time at any period of the game, were all offences that would be punished...

Genuinely can’t work the bloke out.

Absolutely outstanding first half, really unlucky with the shot that hit the post & was causing them no end of problems. 8/10.

Second half a total passenger, one totally brainless bit of play in our box could have cost a goal, didn’t track his man at all, left Pring with far too much to do too often. Passes were hospital ones or too short. 3/10.

Weimann comes on, tracks his man, wins a decent number of challenges, closes down like his life depends on it, absolutely brilliant through ball to Cornick & loads of excellent team play.

Mehmeti cannot play for half a game, he needs to concentrate when we don’t have the ball or are under the cosh.

I didn't go today for the first time in a long time. But I will question your description of Weimann.

Did he really close people down, track back, and make challenges? And thus change his entire game which generally relies on pointing at people?

I get where you're coming from, but on a general note re retention/possession, if passing between the CBs results in a punt upfield or a pass back for the keeper to punt upfield then yes, it is shit imo.

But if passing it between CBs draws an opposition player in and creates a bit of space for a forward pass or a run forward, such as Dickies frequent moves into space or a pass through the lines, its ultimately progressive.

Its not for everyone but can be very productive and progressive if played properly. Time will tell if it is for us and/or if we have the players for it.

I've said it before, but a bloke behind me in the Dolman shouts "FORWARD" at the top of his voice when the CBs are passing it around (or even a throw in), its not for people like him and he's going to go nuts for the rest of this season - and also do my head in cause he's bloody loud.

Why don't you turn around and shout "BACKWARD"?  See if he gets the double meaning. 😉

"I understand how important it is to reconnect the leadership of Bristol City Football Club with its supporters.  That is one of the primary reasons why I moved to Guernsey with my family.  Being present matters, but so does taking responsibility, which is why I appointed Jon. He's not responsible but he is my responsibility.  My appreciation for how critical the Bristol (sic) identity is to this club has grown since I sacked what's his face, and it will be high in my mind as I make the decision to hire that nice young chap from Oxford."

My expectations this season is on the board. Not LM, although that does kinda put an expectations on LM by default. However due to what the board have stated, they should and will be judged on their ability to bring in a head coach to meet the expectations they publicly set.

If in May we are celebrating promotion to the Championship then I'll be praising Jon to high heaven for his decisions.

However equally if we are not, I'll be criticising him.

Which May are you talking about? 😯😲😃

When every metric you can imagine plus your own eyes tell you that we are a mid table side…..guess what?😂

I thought someone on here said that we are second best for goals conceded?? I might have imagined that though.

It's just a shame we have either a sulking 12 year old, or an old baby giraffe, playing up front. Neither of whom look like scoring at the moment.

Yes.  Top 6 no?  Completely agree with your second para but that is what we were told.  That’s the reason they got rid of Nige.   Personally I’m pretty sure I said I’d be happy and expect 10th as a minimum this season before it started when lots were getting dizzy about top 6.   That still stands. But that’s not good enough for our esteemed leadership it seems.

With Pearson in charge, I forecast around 14. I'll stick with that but we may make top 10 with Manning. Fingers crossed.

  11. 6 minutes ago, lenred said:

That’s not true though is it?
He’s been given the platform to perform here - and top 6 is expected this season and with these players.  Maybe he will do it.  Too early to tell so far.   But you cannot give him the same target as NP. We’ve been categorically told that’s not the case.

I thought we were categorically told Manning has the same target that Pearson had?

It's al a bit redundant as anyone who thinks we are a top six side needs their head examining.

@Chivs I forgot to add to my post above, just like there might be a few ready to pounce on Manning if we lose / are poor tomorrow, there may be a few who will see some decent moves (hopefully) or a win / good performance and proclaim we are now well-coached.  It works both ways.  If you can accept they are as irrational as the “other side” then that’s fair / fine.

If we win 3 0, you can rest assured, I will be pointing out what a coaching maestro Manning is. 😜

  13. For some reason, I have a fondness for grounds that are rooted in the community. The reverse is that I generally detest those out of town monstrosities like Cardiff Tescos, Reading Business Park, and Coventry somewhere random.

I like Wigan's old ground whose away end could be charitably described as a grass terrace but more accurately described as a "mud slope".  Great stuff.

One of my other favourites is Leyton Orient.  If I recall correctly, one side of the ground is a set of flats that directly overlook the pitch. I always wondered if those flats were cheaper or more expensive given they were looking at the Orient...

In the 80s I was working in Wells Somerset and consequently know the Mendips very well. Whilst still working there we moved to Meare on the Somerset Levels and from there moved into Glastonbury - at the time we only had one car which I used to get to work and with no buses my wife with two small toddlers felt isolated. Thats why we moved - happy wife, happy life.

I’d like to see your PowerPoint version 🤣🤣🤣

    Not really understanding that?

Do you think Pearson's team played good football? 20 mins against Stoke, 1 half against Ipswich etc, but these were the exceptions that showed his players were not really well coached.

  16. 11 hours ago, Davefevs said:

Was it not a good performance though?  What makes a good performance for you?

I didn't think we played very well.  A good performance for me includes:

    • restricting the opposition to 1 or 2 half chances
    • making more than 3 passes on a regularly basis, and none of those passes being James tapping it back to Vyner
    • for those passes to be along the ground, no longer than 20 yards, and look as if the player passing, and the player receiving the ball, know each other
    • a midfielder, any midfielder, just one midfielder, to actually get past the forwards and become an attacking threat.
    • Or a bit of pace in the team
    • Or one player to make a back heel "just because"

Just the basics of football really.  Something sadly lacking under Pearson.

And if they were in your opinion “grimly awful” it ought to be a piece of piss to improve then? 🤣🤣🤣

    Yes. It will be.

One thing there can’t be is a downturn. I think most people would take similar results to achieved by Nige if performances improved. History has shown though we’re less patient to accept results if performance is poor (I’m thinking Holden). The QPR game was one where we expected a point minimum no matter who was in charge but the poor nature of the performance reflected badly.

Summary: I think, unless results go through the roof with worse performance, we’d take performances improving primarily. If, however, results stay the same/marginally improve or worsen and performance takes a downturn, then I think that’s what causes the most potential issues

Performances can't take a downturn. They were grimly awful under Pearson.  Even in victory we were awful.  "Bristol City vs Coventry" is now in the dictionary for "daylight robbery".  The 4-1 drubbing of Plymouth's second team was not without chances for Plymouth etc.

Also, people seemed to forget that for the first two years Pearson's interviews were dour and dull. I think this was partly to do with his Covid but it was not a good listen.

For the final 6 months, Pearson seemed to relax and provide good background until he went batshit crazy...

Prior to Fairfax House Mum used to drag us all to the Co-ops on Castle St. First to collect her accumulated dividend, then spend the vouchers in the Co-op stores. I can still remember Mum's and Grandad's dividend numbers   **1** and **2**( not going to divulge them on here).
