The problem with that model / approach is you need top, top, top recruitment and a manager with a football identity to recruit towards.  We didn’t have that.  Luton did.  They exploited a market of undervalued players that fitted their style of football.  You could see clubs like City having a snobbish attitude to buying someone like Elijah Adebayo for example.

Also, assuming you churn those players regularly, you only make a profit against their book value.  That becomes harder the more better established players you buy.  No disrespect to players like Weimann or Hunt, especially Weimann, but you were unlikely to ever get the money back on them.  Their fees were sunk.

you also need a steady stream of Academy players too, because they are pure profit.  You can’t do it all on “buy then sell”.

Someone like SL should know that “having your eggs in one basket” (one method) is poor investment advice.

Squad building is an art.  Very few get it right, very few get the time to get it right.

I agree up to a point. I remember listening to interviews about how we recruit and the process we go through, we obviously thought we were pretty revolutionary in our approach, certainly different to a Luton at that point. At the end of the day, recruitment is hard, nobody wants to sell you a player worth 5m for 1m.

The signing that sums up that spell for me was eliasson. Seemed like he could be anything, fast, whipped a cross... but never quite had all the ingredients. Traditional scouting was who looks good in their team that might help us be more effective, progressive became who is the fastest, pass completion, entries into the box etc... again I'm not saying either model is better but the progressive seemed more risk/reward than traditional squad building.

It left us in a right mess when the floor fell out of the transfer market so I'm still not convinced how it would've played out had that not happened.

  2. I'm unsure on this, I think what happened was we had some good players at a high financial boom time, sold them for a lot of money and went to the model of acquiring players who were mainly identified within a data model whose value would increase.

To some extent it was a decent idea but the market totally fell through with covid and nobody was worth owt with a hefty wage bill to boot.

That meant that the model couldn't possibly work and we had a very difficult time getting back to an even keel.

As mentioned he was a very good businessman within that model and negotiated well with purchases and sales of players. Whether we made the most of the talents we had isn't necessarily down to him.

I'd surmise he's good when given a big pot to play with, not so good at the steady Eddie constraints stuff... risk and reward. Not sure Lansdowns are happy gambling, particularly these days following covid and ffp.

  3. Just listened to the pre match press interview, following on from Tinnion earlier this week and the Southampton references are really winding me up now.

I understand we won at home vs a side on a good run but one swallow a summer doth not make.

By all means describe what you're trying to do to get the best out of the players but stop banging on about this one game. Let's be honest it wasn't even that great - we are now a team who wants to dominate the ball and had 32% of it. And I swear tinnion said it was 3-0 as well on the radio.

I'm yet to be convinced by manning, but I'd happily change that if I see a more effective team and pattern in games, it might not be until next season with some additions to the squad but honestly stop talking about the Southampton game please!

  4. Andi has been a top pro for City. As others say he probably has had his best days, but still does a decent job and I imagine works well with teammates who clearly respect him (voted as captain after all). He is fine, and as long as he isn't expected to keep up energy and play full 90s twice pw adds value.

In terms of the podcasts, I find them all interesting and a totally varied mix. I have my own views on positive and negative of each but that is well exceeded by my view of thanks to those who take time to run them every week. Takes a real commitment that so well done, they make a difference to my week and I always look forward to them!

  5. I'm on the fence this season. Was optimistic but when I was at the opening game it was clear that we had more depth, but had ultimately swapped Scott for Knight and Kalas for Dickie and that was about it from last season. If someone asked me if I'd like to swap back I'd definitely take it.

I conclude that I see what Nigel has brought in terms of stability through FFP post covid but can't say I'm overly impressed with progression in terms of performances yet.

  8. Quite excited about todays game. Feels like ages and the new season seems filled with optimism. Lots of questions that if the answer is yes, we can have a really positive season at the right end of the table.

Can Conway push on and become our talisman striker?

Can we maintain a high press and energy more consistently?

Can we eradicate errors at the back?

Can Mehmeti bring more consistent end product?

Not sure why I don't feel like Alex Scott will be still here end of the month. Feels a little like going to a take that concert with no Robbie. One thing is for sure, gonna be an interesting journey. Strap in and enjoy the ride!
