There’s also a section about “marginal gains“ and GN notes how overrated this concept is in the English game. Neville stresses the importance of top class coaching being far more important as this is the backbone of any player development, marginal gains are merely that very, very marginal differences, which rather blows a hole in LJ’s philosophy!

Does GN's opinion "blow a hole" in any manageras ideas/theories..?

I wouldn't have thought his record stood up well enough to make his opinion mean alot & his one real role model & inspiration (SAF) was the absolute master of marginal gains & mind games -.

Stating that top class coaching is more important is hardly an earth shattering  view point.

Marginal gains are just that - marginal..!

I think @Davefevs mentioned the same up above. In a pre-internet world (apologies for presuming your age) it absolutely makes sense not to waste column inches with meaningless tables in August.

I found it interesting to see that alphabetical order isn't actually an official method of ranking teams. I suspect there's an unwritten rule that until game 46 has been played you use it in lieu of the playoff.

I also think it must be the disciplinary ranking system of the enigmatic "provision 9.4" that currently places us above Swansea. I've not broken it down forensically but we got 0 yellow and red cards and committed 10 fouls, whereas Swansea got 1 yellow and committed 9 fouls. Points are actually handed out for the nature of the foul/offence rather than whether it's a caution, a yellow, or a red, but I assume we have fewer points than Swansea and so we are above them.

Yes that would make sense - it was probably a pre-internet thing.

In reality, exact league positions don't matter until the end of games 46 & should anything be that tight between 2 meaningful placings - then the coverage & awareness of the deeper rules would well known before kick off.

I was aware of it tracking back to games against each other, but didn't know that it then took disciplinary records into account.

Not sure how new it is but if you read the EFL Handbook (Section 3, paragraph 9) then you see that league position is determined as follows:

    1. Points;

    2. Goal Difference; then

    3. Goals Scored.

Normally that's enough, but at the start of a season we often have to go deeper into paragraph 9. When the above are equal you look at:

    4. League record between the two teams in question, considering in order:

    a) points gained against each other;

    b) goal difference in games between each other; then

    c) goals scored in games between each other.

But, again, even this can't separate teams like us and Preston who drew 1-1 in the only game we've played so far. So, we now look at:

    5. Number of wins;

    6. Goals in away games; and

    7. The provisions of paragraph 9.4 - which is a points system based on fouls, yellows, and reds.

If that's still not enough at the end of a season then it's a playoff.

So, basically right now it's Preston's away goal trumping out home goal, at step 6 above that gets them higher up.

Technically the alphabet never comes into it, but I think the BBC and other media outlets use it as a tiebreaker in order to display the table properly.

    Interesting to know!

Is just my failing memory, or is it the case that when I was younger they didn't even produce league table until 3.? Games into the season.?

I could be imagining that - but I'm sure they never used to bother...

Pitch is obviously the same for both teams.

Preston didn't have too many problems passing.

Probably because they appeared to be better prepared than our players, first to the 2nd ball, sharp, and looked stronger and fitter.

Nothing to do with the pitch imo.

More down to the conditioning of the players.

Half their team were going down with cramp in the second half.

We were poor today, but out fitness levels looked better than theirs.

So one or two of the starting XI were, in your opinions, surprising, and you've then voluntarily ascribed your opinions to be those of "most". Ok fair enough.

Wells' form in pre-season was decent so I'm not sure it was that mad to pick him over Conway. As for Sykes/Cornick - I personally would have gone Sykes, but I can understand Cornick. I'd not really qualify either as a "baffling" decision though.

It's a question of language I guess, I think "baffling" is a little overblown.

I'd disagree. I found the decision to start Cornick ahead of Sykes baffling - hence the descriptive of "baffling"

You may not agree with it  & that's you perogative.

For me, it was baffling & to those who sit around me.

Better than the coke heads/pre pubescents sneaking in cans of Haze to stand constantly and pissing everyone off, that were in E34 today.

The ones who think singing "I can't read & I can't write....." is either clever, funny or ironic.... rather than cringing embarrassing..?!

It should be great having a singing section in that area - but it is just embarrassing.

Not when you consider I got in the queue at 40 mins (I.e. still in the first half technically).

    ******* crap.

I never understand going to a football match & then missing nearly 10 mins of the match to go & stand in a queue.

It's like people who start heading for the exits on 80/85 mins...

Always makes me wonder why they bother going in the first place.

In fairness, I was at the Mansfield match - so would never leave a game early.!

Okay, may be having a moan over a minor thing but seriously whoever is managing stock at the ground needs a fat steel toe-capped boot up their backside. Kiosks in the south stand running out of pies and pasties at half time!

    Wtf!!

Though we then did have a fairly tasty burger from the van by the thatchers bar, at £22 for 2 burgers we won’t be buying there often.

Isn't half time quite a good time for kiosks to be selling out.?

Having covered pre-match & into the interval..? I'm sure they'd prefer that to having loads left in the hope of shifting them at the end of the game.

Running out during half time seems pretty good to me & nobody is going to starve in the coming hour until they can get something elsewhere.

If you thought they looked unfit, how fit did you think we looked!!?

I didn't think we looked unfit.

We didn't look like we had any game plan or ideas, or shape to our play.

When their players were struggling with cramp, we still couldn't muster any composed control of the game.

I'm not sure it was baffling. Would any of us have put out a radically different XI?

I think most were surprised not to see Conway & Sykes in the starting 11.

Especially with AS out injured, surely you want your strongest players filling in elsewhere.

I thought he ran willingly & did OK generally - as he usually does (I'm not a hater of his atall) but there is no way that starting Cornick over Sykes is picking your strongest possible 11 - imho.

The rest of the team was pretty straightforward selection, granted - but baffling by way of leaving 2 or 3 of your most attacking threats on the bench, against an average team, coming into the season off the back of a crap pre-season, at home, in front of a sell out crowd - it felt like an opportunity missed and so it proved to be.

Do the fans in the Landsdown stand think they are above everyone else, I noticed when the South and Dolman were applauding Chris Garland on the 9th minute, hardly anyone in the Landsdown were clapping, remember if it wasn’t for players like Chris you snobs wouldn’t be here

    R.I.P Chris

and thank you for all you great moments and sacrifice

Would it not have been more respectful to Chris to concentrate on applauding (wasn't the applause done before kick off - the unexpected picture of him on the boars during the game seemed a bit odd, just having done an obvious minutes applause) rather than scouring the stands to see who was & wasn't applauding.?

Very odd thing to get worked up about & even more odd to put it down to "snobbery"

  12. Disappointing today.

Baffling team selection before the start.

Lack of game plan or purpose from the start & failed to stamp our authority on a bang average team that looked fairly unfit & there for the taking.

Pre-season optimisms sharply put back into the reality of probably an inconsistent, frustrating season ahead, where we don't get the best out of our players & will be relying on key players to stop up to win us games - rather than taking a strangle hold of the opposition & dictating games.

Of course - a massive over reaction based on today's disjointed & uninspiring performance - based on more of the same old, same old - when I was hoping we'd look fresh & exciting.

Maybe that will come - but today was pretty drab.

  13. Possibly being naive here here, but I really can't see why there should be any notable problem at the entrances today - proving the tickets scan properly.!

I'd only received my digital ticket & not my sons (email was an old on on his account apparently).

Matt at supporter services sorted it all out straight away after a 30 min queue to get through.

As long as people have addressed any obvious issue in the lead up to today, then there should be no issues in people scanning & moving straight through.

Mine has also changed to Birmingham, but with today's date - providing that doesn't cause scanning issues, then it should all be very straightforward...

Any bblipin the system & yes, utter chaos will arise - but until that becomes evident - I think people are creating potential problems in their own mind.

Looks like just 230 tickets left in the home areas of stadium. Think available bike tickets normally max at 22.5k, understand that PNE have sold over 1k so should be 23.5-24k which is a solid effort. Appreciate there will be many on holiday, I know a few but should look pretty healthy let’s hope for a good start and get some of mates rates attendees back fro league match 2.

I doubt it will be that many.

You've made no allowance for limited capacities in safe standing areas & other general allowances that tend to need to be made for football matches, which lower the actual 27,000 seats available before you even start.

About 22k is probably more likely, if PNE are only bringing 1k.

It's a shame the Atyeo capacity can't be easily split to allow extra home capacity, in cases like this.

That statement is an outright lie. The reality is that Rovers knowingly demolished part of their stadium (albeit a tent) and sold tickets without obtaining the required planning permission.

That decision involved a considerable development risk, and one they would have been fully aware of.
Having worked in planning and development for nearly 20 years, I have never come across such reckless behaviour from what should be a professional organisation.

Although they now admit that the stand won't be ready, they had complete control over the factors that caused the delay, making any other claim misleading. Put simply, the delay was caused by their incompetence in submitting a low-quality planning application late in the process.

As pointed out by KITR, the next planning committee meeting isn't until early September, and considering the raised issues, it's likely that the Council may require additional detail and public consultation, and that could lead to further delays until October.

Hence, it’s going to take at least another 8-12 weeks for the stand to be completed in line with a planning permission. I cannot believe that the EFL and the opposition sides impacted during that period will be too pleased with playing in a ground with no seats or disabled facilities for their supporters.

    They’re actually a circus.

Just asking out of interest, for a friend....

What sort of circumstances may disrupt a planning committee meeting & cause it to be delayed by a month or six....?

Is this their best gift ever? How much more tinpot can they get? Complete embarrassment of a football club.

    It certainly is a beauty.....

But no... it doesn't & nothing else could ever match up to being relegated to non-league by losing at home to a team wearing your own away kit - that truly was special..!

I think this is up there with Santa's Grotto though..!

Actually no... a quick Google search of Wally was all it took for everyone to easily see that he didn't have a fraction of the money being spouted about.

I think it took anyone who'd care to look about half an hour to suss out they weren't actually the richest club in existence - whereas some of them still haven't worked it out.!

Disregard the quarters monstrosity & it's better than they usually produce.

I thought they were rebounding their badge a year or so ago though..?

Those will fly off the shelves & you'll see literally 10's of them dotted around the rehab centres of North Bristol.!

I'm no expert, plus a tad cynical , but maybe it was deliberate.

They had the necessary public meeting midweek during working hours apparently.
They held off planning application until the last minute.
They started clearing the site before any consent had been granted.
They seem to be going ahead before the Planning application has been heard.

I wonder if they are trying to pressure the Powers that be into green lighting it all .
Add the delay for SAG checks it does look odd. They will blame everyone else if they don't get the go ahead, and the fans (or most of them and the Post ) will lap it up with one flash of a nice watch.

I'd even forgotten to mention the planning situation.!

In my opinion (& not just this project, but anyone just carrying on with work before being granted the appropriate planning) should automatically have it rejected.

It's taking the Mickey to just build what you want & then bother getting the clearance for doing so - when everyone else wants until it's granted to begin work.
