Prior to last night I wanted a mini-cup run to get players minutes, ease into the season etc.

But with unashamed hindsight (?) there is a big part of me that thinks it’s perfect.  Nige gets to focus on the league, focus on competition for league games only.  You could argue a couple get to coast knowing they will get minutes in the Carabao Cup.  Not any more they won’t.  18 shirts to fill each game, there are gonna be a good few not getting kitted up each game wondering where their next minutes are coming from.

They will either react positively (good thing) or Nige will see that they aren’t what he wants…and help in determine where to trim the numbers.

It wasn’t the plan but I can see it being a positive.

Your posts are always well informed and argued Dave but if even you are falling back on the 'concentrate on the league' cliche I fear the worst!

Summed up nicely by Ian Rush on his struggle to adapt to Italian life after his move to Juventus in 1987/88

'I couldn't settle in Italy,' the £3.2million man said, 'it was like living in a foreign country."

I believe that quote was actually made up by Kenny Dalglish.

I still want it to be true though. ?

Going on a bit of a stereotype here but Serie A maybe suits strikers who are prepared to get fewer opportunities to score per match and are ready to convert them when they come along. I reckon that could suit Abraham.

It is indeed a stereotype. Catenaccio is ancient history.

Without checking, I think Serie A was the highest scoring of Europe's top 5 leagues last season.

What about the striker he left on the bench?

Whichever striker was left on the bench, or even if he had started them both, the fact remains he wants another. Hardly surprising given our scoring record.

Unfortunately we don't have any money. So I imagine he will rotate Martin and Wells and hope for the best.

That is the position the previous regime has left us in.

Overnight? He’s been in charge since Feb - 7 months and we are still have no backbone.  How long are you suggesting he needs. Good pre season and all was supposed to be different.

A culture of fear was built up over years by Johnson and and Holden. It can also infect new players coming in if they sense their teammates are panicking.

It's a lot easier to improve physical fitness than mental. It took Klopp a couple of years to change the mentality at Liverpool for instance.

It's going to be a long haul I suspect.

I thought that the fact we are apparently a lot fitter now would mean we would be more able to cope with this type of situation. But I suppose it is early days yet. But a shame that we have already dropped points at home.

I don't think it's fitness but mentality. The longer the game goes on the more scared we get. This is a long standing problem with no sign of a solution yet.

Most obviously we always needed a second goal to be sure.

Pros - our energy and shape especially in the first half, created several good chances, AS and SB being trusted

Cons - it looked like they might sneak one and so late on they did, us not hitting the target with good chances (COD and AW in particular), COD getting injured early on

Thought we might just make it a home win and a clean sheet, but hey we are Bristol City!

Our best bet for the season is keeping clean sheets given we don't have goals in us.

Sadly we still look like a scared team when the pressure is on. Nigel isn't going to change that mentality overnight.

Perhaps Paul Cook has the experience and strength of personality to be able to handle Ashton. I imagine Johnson and Holden were fairly easy for Ashton to handle.

They've built up a good squad and under Cook (who I'd have quite liked here prior to Holden) I can see them challenging.

I imagine Cook does. The question is, if there is conflict between them at some point which one will survive?

My money's on Ashton, who has proved adept at avoiding accountability. A classic case of failing upwards.

While we are on the subject of psychology, I just came across this:

Narcissistic personality disorder involves a pattern of self-centered, arrogant thinking and behavior, a lack of empathy and consideration for other people, and an excessive need for admiration.

Yep, said to be common in people in positions of power.

On only a slight tangent, Jon Ronson's book The Psychopath Test is an interesting read.

Article in the Guardian today. Highlight is these three paragraphs:

“Ashton scrolls through his phone and locates a picture of a placard bearing the words “Run towards adversity”, surrounded by signatures. He asked Ipswich’s players, a largely new team after a summer of sweeping change, to “sign it in blood” after a meeting last week. The phrase relates to the challenges faced by the firefighters and rescue workers whose contributions will directly fund the club’s ambition.

“They have to run into burning fires, towards bullets, towards danger,” he says. “The only thing the pension fund have asked me is that, if you join this club, every time you go to work you run towards adversity and tackle the challenge head on. The players represent the fans and the community, but they represent those people as well.

“After it was presented to them, one of the squad went up to my director of performance, Andy Rolls, and said: ‘I owe you an apology, my running stats were down yesterday and I didn’t put in the effort I should have. It won’t happen again.’”

Just the way he engendered a culture of "running towards adversity" here then? As opposed to a culture of laughing all the way to the bank.

Note the reference to my director of performance. So he's already decided it's his club.

    Would you look at that @chinapig @Hxj @downendcity @Davefevs

Thought Mel had them on strings, you know. ?

Still under Embargo it would appear, or with very tight restrictions at the very least.

Pretty interesting Tweet as well...some kinda plea-bargain I wonder- I'd be looking at this line of enquiry were I the EFL.

I'd also be offering Reading a deal whereby they can sign players under EFL terms and conditions, in exchange for an immediate deduction and financial targets for the coming season.

So punishing a club for multiple breaches of regulations is unjust because the fans are innocent? Bit like saying somebody found guilty of fraud should face no punishment in the courts because their family did nothing wrong.

Personally if fans make no objection when their club is managed recklessly I reckon they are partly complicit.

In any event Derby fans need to make up their minds. Are they a massive club that deserve to be in the PL by right or are they a little provincial club being bullied by the big boys?

    Couple of bits on Derby.

    https://www.skysports.com/football/news/12040/12368415/wayne-rooneys-troubles-continue-at-derby-county-can-englands-ex-captain-somehow-steady-the-ship

We know a lot about it and tbh the £14.6m Profit in the CLUB Accounts isn't what's used for Reporting purposes but let it slide.

Another interesting snippet which sounds like a bit of back to front logic from the pov of the Club...

Why would Restating or submitting Accounts that are 1 year and 1 month and 1 month overdue respectively give you more leeway- surely the flipside is that if you don't it means further charges/trouble? The IDC have ordered it, therefore it must be done.

Why would fulfilment of a basic expectation, an order from the IDC lead to greater lenience? That's the wrong way round possibly.

My thinking is that to 2018 it's hard to call either way but any overspend would be modest if it exists, but that to 2019 there could be a big problem.

    Rightly so too.

Now Nixon, seems that it goes from 5 to 4...and on £4,500 per week as it stands.

Seems fair to me- if you don't get the contract offer in by the deadline, how can a free agent be treated as an existing player?

Although why the end of July given their Accounts run until 30th June- linked to the extra months wages maybe that players get when departing clubs?

Given Tracey Crouch's recent comments about the football authorities being reluctant to take firm action this may be a tipping point for the EFL.

If they bend over backwards to be lenient to Derby it will support Crouch's case for an independent regulator. Something I'm sure the EFL won't want - who knows what independent scrutiny might uncover after all?
