Back in the days when the gas played at Eastville, a member of my father's staff, who was a staunch city supporter would never,  as a matter of principle,  use the M32.

Yes I clearly remember the Rovers players being upset that they hadn't seen him drive by.?

It was also said Gibson had one mistake per game in him.  I don’t think that is a criticism though!

    For me Anderson is tops

Bob Anderson was the first GK I saw when I started watching City. I was only about 8 but he seemed about 7 ft tall. My earliest memories are of him and Tony Cook in goal. Proper footballs in those days too, especially when wet!!  Gibbo probably my No.1 though.

I think the reason we’re viewed as a “strange club” is that inherently there is a heck of a lot of potential which just doesn’t seem to be realised, so people look for an underlying reason.

The catchment area for City is huge. There aren’t competitors in the south west of any comparable size. So, you’re outside looking in - you say why are this team, which is significantly bigger than anyone else around them and has clear potential to be in the premier league, not kicking that door down?

Previously you could have said Stadium - now you can’t

Previously you could have said fan base - now you can’t

Previously you could have said financial backing - now you can’t

Previously you could have said lack of appeal to players - now you can’t

So, outside looking in - everything is geared to the top level. Pre our FFP hiccup, you had a well funded squad playing in a new stadium with capacity in line with small prem, an owner who’d write off debt and 20k turning up each week.

The only reason, outside looking in, that people think we aren’t kicking on is - why don’t they want it enough? And that means we are “strange”…

Exactly as I wrote in another thread. You can't judge a book by its cover.  We look such an attractive option from outside, so the fault obviously lies within.  We just need to identify the problem.  My money's on SL despite all he's invested. The buck stops at the top.

  4. I don't think Nige will walk away. I think he made the mistake of judging the book by its cover. (As did Coppell imo). Britain's 7th? largest city with a billionaire owner and a catchment area that most other teams would envy. It's surely there for the taking. What could possibly go wrong? Trouble is, something or someone is lurking beneath the  surface.  If we can eradicate that problem, then who knows?  Problem is finding and fixing the flaw, whatever it is.

    Agreed.

I’d just hope if we did go up we’d be smart about it. I’d pluck a few of the best from the championship. 1-2 foreign imports and just have a go. If it didn’t work go down with a good squad ready to go back up. Similar to norwich except eventually have a stronger squad by the 2nd time up to have a real go at staying up for a season or two at least.

Ok .The jobs yours. Just need to shift Nige out now.?

Again just because we are promoted doesn’t need to spend 20m on 6 players. It also doesn’t mean treble everyones wages. That was an example of how much money you get for being at that level.

Brentford spent 33m on players from smaller leagues for the most part. I doubt any of them are on more than 40k a week. I don’t think they were paying out of this world in the championship.

If we started turning a loss in the PL it is because of mismanagement. Which is pretty much all SL knows so maybe you are right.

Fair point Joe. Ave wage in the Prem is 60k so that was just an example. Judging by yesterday's performance we  need at least at least 6 new players to compete in the Championship!

My original point about SL not being able to afford the Prem, I still stand by though. Its why he is looking for additional financial input into the club.

Prem is a long way off for this club though. Div 1 looks more likely at present.

Pretty weird take. We lost 40m in one season with no tv money. We could treble that in the prem and be up 20-30m. In a crude way means treble all wages and we’d still turn a profit. So the likes of Palmer, Kalas, Bentley and Dasilva would be in the 50-75k range per week. We wouldn’t be paying anything close to that imo. We’d be in the 30-40k range if we went up for a handful of players plus increases for some here. SL would make plenty for the first time

It wouldn't mean just trebling the money of present players though. It would mean signing half a dozen "Webster" type players for upwards of 20 million each and paying the going rate for wages if we want to compete. 60k a week is 3 million a year per player. Do the maths. The Prem is not the pot of gold for all teams.

Of course SL could just pocket the cash, not buy anyone, increase the current wages by 50%, and come crashing back down again. If we want to compete and stay in the Prem,( if we ever get there) , it will cost big time.

SL can’t afford receiving £140m.  He’d prefer the club to lose £15-25m per year.

You think he will make money in the Prem?  4 or 5 decent players plus scary wages and agents fees will make a big dent in 140 mil. Do you think many Prem clubs make a profit?

SL said when we got to the Championship that he was surprised at players fees and wage demands. If he thought that was scary,   well, watch out!!

Yep, we all have different priorities and reasons.

The product on offer doesn’t really affect me.  It’s more about watching “live football”, father and son bonding (occasionally taking my dad too), etc.  At this stage, with Joe being u19, the price isn’t a driver either.

I appreciate that your circumstances are very different to mine and therefore your reasons also.

I am a bit of an old stager now though having watched City from the fifties. I've  seen us in the top and bottom flights and I've seen brilliance and utter trash in that time.

Football has changed massively over that time mostly for the better but not always. Yes I've stood ankle deep in p*ss in the old toilets and queued for hours in the rain for tickets. Difference then was that it felt more personal then. Today its much more a business selling a product to a customer. My hearts not in it as much as it was.

Will I renew?  Probably, but it's more a habit now rather than a passion. Now, where's my checkbook?

What would be really interesting to see is a breakdown of season card holders in each section of the pic below:

if we take 19/20, we sold circa 13k and revenue was £3.622m, so average price is £278 per SC.

I guess we can’t go on just how many sold, has to be a combo of that, plus where they’re sold, and how much revenue it brings in.

My view is that I’d rather generate £3.622m from 18k rather than 13k, because footfall means we see more spend elsewhere, but I’m not the bean counter here.

If the expected revenue is approx 4 million then the best way in my view is to have 20000 fans paying average £200each which would be good for atmosphere and the concession sales. Or  SL could stump up 4 mil and come on his own. Same club revenue, but if we want more fans , then we need to make pricing more attractive.
