The official Bristol City FC v Leeds United FC match day thread 12

Hello fellow City comrades.

It's been a while since I headed up a MDT (one abbreviation for you @Robbored) but unfortunately Hav is otherwise indisposed so here I am!

He asked me to focus on Leeds players. (No, I don't mean the male cast of Emmerdale, falling out of clubs and women quicker than Mcindoe with a creditor), I of course mean Leeds United players.

So one from the present day. Mr Luke "pint pissing" Ayling. No intro needed here. He was one of our rejects that LJ sent away for a rumoured £750k. We got Adam Matthews in replacement...

Lanky Lukey has done well for himself at Elland Road, or at least he did. Bargain of the century they said. Best RB in the champ they said. Yet, recently he has begun to fall afoul of the Marching on Together crowd. Losing his mark, dropping too far forward and leaving the CB to cover opens up the Leeds defence... however, when signing a contract extension earlier this week, the Leeds fans were once again all over him like a seagull on a dropped kebab.

I'm sure he'll get some applause/boos from the corners of AG today...

And now one from the past. Peter Lorimer was one of those few Scots that "made it" into English football. Voted 9th greatest Leeds player of all time, he eventually became a director at the club and now is club ambassador (Tins is ours so that should give you some idea of how much he is held in esteem up in Yorkshire).

Peter also holds both the youngest player record as well as 2 goalscoring records at Leeds. He was a wee nipper aged just 15 and 289 days when he went up against full grown men for Leeds v Southampton back in 1962.

His record goalscorer award stands at 238 goals over a total of 14 years. Not bad at all for an midfielder. The other record he also holds is that of highest league goals in aggregate, a total of 168.

So, today. Leeds have struggled recently but should not be underestimated. They also traditionally don't do well at AG but until recently, we didn't do well at Reading or Ipswich...

I'd like to think a draw but my guts say Leeds will come out and give us a pasting just because... fingers crossed Fam can take Pontus out asap...

Come on you Reds!

Good post @Septic Peg but I’ve got to add one extra Leeds player from the past - Terry Cooper. Though past his prime (aren’t we all?) when he joined City as a player, he was still skilful. His subsequent days as player manager / manager in the dark days of division 4 was even better.

If my memory serves me right apart from last season they’ve won every game at AG since we came back up under GJ , please correct me if I’m wrong .

You’re wrong we drew 2-2 with them in 2015/16.

Would have added TC but time was against me and I'm not feeling my best today (self inflicted - no sympathy required).

Looking forward to this game. After Bolton and Burton came to park the bus it'll be interesting to see how we fare against a team near us in the league who presumably will be aiming for 3 points.

Bet us and Rochdale to win - ah well - another tenner wasted - stupid heart !!

Genuinely think you've got to have bollocks like bowling balls to bet on the City

Fair few Leeds in yate weatherspoons. Not my choice for an away day!

Wind must be strong if it's blown them that far off course.

I think it's going to be a close game today and as others have said could be won by the odd goal, but who knows City could have a field day (I hope) if not then a draw is the more likely result.   Still all of you going, cheer the lads on to a great victory, which will give them more confidence than they have already.  COYR's

Too many Leeds fans in my office for us to lose this - hoping we can at the very least hold them, or even use or extra bit of rest & Leeds’ bad run to nick all the points.

Norman Hunter  showed his real class when he made the move to AG - hard as nails but also skillful and what a free kick he used to deliver. Think this is a good time to be playing Leeds #COYR

What a player, as you say, skillful a hard man and a terrific leader on the pitch,  loved to watch him playing.

Surprising amount of pessimism on here. We're the favourites in my view.

That's when we are most capable of cocking it up.

I can’t see a win but I won’t complain if we get one, 2-2 for me

Spoke to one of them in the bar earlier... big lad ....I think he said his name was Per? Bought a lager then said to me it tasted funny. Thatchers Gold mate  his first game here and first cider... proper job

Actually really like that line up - Just shows our strength in depth we have these days when you can take out 3 of our best players this year (Baker, Paterson and Diedhiou) and can bring  in players with the class of Leko and Hegelar.

Posted

Can only think we’re playing a weaker/not regular side so we can go all out against Palace on Tuesday. Plus Woodrow and Leko not able to play mid week gives them a chance to put everything into today not worrying about future fixtures

but I’m not the gaffer so who knows :shifty:

Yes, thats Per. Soon we go to south stand. COYR!!!

3 of our best players out today. Will be a good rest of just how deep our squad strength is.

Will be really tough today now, but should we get a result, that will bode extremely well with 3 big players missing.

COYR!

Posted

Hegeler, Leko, Pack, O'Dowda and Woodrow all starting.

Smith and Baker injured, Paterson ill,  Eliasson replaced and Diedhiou rested.

Posted

Those three plus Smith and Pisano, I would argue half our 'first' outfield team is out. Ho hum, nothing can do about it now, just have to see what happens.

Posted

If we win today without Baker, Paterson and Smith, it will raise my expectations for this season as it will show we do have real strength in depth.

Posted

Not sure why Famara is 'rested' today when we have already been forced into 3 changes due to injuries. Woodrow has been pretty invisible in his last two sub appearances.

Maybe LJ has seen something in training this week from CW. That didn't work out too well last week with Eliasson though. Bit nervous now I have seen the team.

Agree about CW...with MD nearly fit he needs a good performance today or will soon find himself struggling to even get on the bench

My guess - he’s one of a couple that LJ has said came back from the International break a little ‘undercooked’ so misses out due to that.

We sure Brownhill isn’t going to RB?

The Twitter team line up suggest not but I wouldn't mind seeing Hegeler in midfield.

Hegeler surely will be replacing Baker, so not likely to be in midfield.

Too many changes I fear, Smith is going to be a huge loss hes been superb so far this season.

+1

I'm not convinced by the starting XI: I hope to be proven wrong.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hegeler starts or reverts to Full back.

Wright and Flint are a more obvious pairing if Magnússon is left out again!

Good thread start young Peg .

Lorimer was also famous for having one of the hardest shots in football . I don't know how he compared with our very own Walshy but I wouldn't have liked to be in a defensive wall wiating for one of his free kicks . :shocking:

I see a City win today . We have grown up and are not intimidated by bigger ,more illustrious clubs .
