@BRISTOL86Pulis was after Flint when he was at West Brom, seems he’s finally got his man.

This could have been going on for months and months, Warnock once went after one of our players (long, long gone) and was phoning him all hours of the day and night, made a real nuisance of himself. He never did get him but his persistence went on for months.

He did get Nick Carle though! :laughcont:

We had Tammy. We struggled that season due to an extremely poor defence of which Flint was the key player, and not through a lack of goals.  Flints a good player but for me has reached his level. There will be better, younger players to be had.  In our position it’s finding these players that will move us forward.

We struggled because of a weak and unfit for purpose midfield, a midfield that was still unfit for purpose for the 2nd half of last season and a midfield that will continue to let us down if it is not strengthened.

Wright unselfishly played through injury, ultimately needing an op and probably cost him his World Cup place.  Was solid as a rock at RB (not great on the Ball admittedly) until Leeds away.

Now reported as £7m....about right imho.

My issue is not with the player, it is with a manager who instead of finding a specialist right back made it up as he went along and played 3 different players out of position and it weakened the defence, he then made matters worse by not finding a replacement in the disastrous January window and finally thought it was a good idea to bring a barely half fit Pisano back. That is far from the professional image that our club should be displaying.

Fair enough but who was the last manager or pair you had faith in on transfers?

It's not even just on transfers…

I think the last time was probably when Cotts was here. I know that was in L1 but I don't feel that the club has a great scouting network (esp lower leagues). We had a top scout/recruiter who fell out with SL & co and couldn't work the club's way.  I'm just concerned that our core team has fallen out/lost faith in the club's ethos. I don't know if that is a good thing or not.

Watch this space, I have it under reasonably good authority that a replacement is lined up and should be announced at a similar time to Flint leaving.  I don't lnow any names but based upon the Webster thread looks like it could be him.

I have no reason to doubt the source of the info as it is from someone who I would expect to be ITK, based in Bristol with links to the club.

We were going to sign permanently Henderson from Manu and then loan him for a season and then..........................................................................

My point is we desperately need some quality and some leaders for a change, I will judge that on the rest of this window, the past 12 months transfer wise has been poor.

If you are referring to the person I think you are, the issue was rather more than a falling out I am led to believe.

In League 1 our budget meant we could outstrip our rivals but Cotts never seemed to be much bothered about infrastructure, or anything much beyond the first team squad.

The real gap at the moment imo is the lack of a DoF leading to a certain senior executive having too much influence over recruitment.

I guess that's my real worry…perhaps if he spends more time with the EFL Board that would be a good thing!

Flint was meant to have gone last summer, and his replacement was signed in Baker. Wright was the other player intended to make the pairing. So assume that, together with Vyner as one of the back up players. Kelly is going to play more at left back, and we assume Pisano will come back fit, this time on the right. And other defensive signings to back those 4 up.

Reid, Bryan, Pack likely to leave too. Watkins is replacement for one  of them, though no idea which one.

Risk for City if all three run their contracts down. They can get notable signing on fees without a big transfer fee involved ( as they will be over 24 do not think there is any compensation paid either despite coming through youth system, would need to check ) . Depends if they are interested in any proposed moves.

There could be some surprise interest for a couple of others too

Interesting summer.

Heard a couple of our targets too, but quite honestly, you can link anyone with anyone at this time of year so I take it all  with a pinch of salt so not even worth passing on or getting asked about Source .

But lots of trading as LJ builds , again, after 40 odd players, his team, with boys he can trust. Getting rid of the current core who made it impossible for Kent to integrate into the side. Apparently. This is the latest excuse , after injuries, leaders, no money, blah blah blah. I look forward to the 18/19 season bullshit book of excuses for being inept.

Feel free to name the players Billy - no need for the source.

You've been on here long enough to be seen as an honest and genuine poster who wouldn't be making things up.

It would be interesting to know the names you've heard, and If they don't come off, so be it.

This is bullshit, disappointed very.   Thinking his new contract has forced the sale.  Hope we’ve got top replacement.

However you have to think maybe has mind was else where at Christmas which contributed to our very poor run of form.  Just a thought.

Imo. Flint was 1 of only 2 players to maintain their form throughout the season, the other being Bobby Reid.

I agree, leaders encourage and support other players, not chew them out at every opportunity.

Well there's a completely OTT character assassination for you.

Flint absolutely led by example and I'd imagine was extremely popular amongst his defensive team mates not only for his own defensive work, but for covering their mistakes, and generally keeping them fired up when City were under pressure.

One of the first names on the end of season squad holidays hardly indicates a character the other players resent.

Yep, add Burnley, Fulham, Cardiff ..... wow.

Keep thinking little fish and you become one.

We're behind Cardiff by a few years a) Because they moved from Ninian Park in 2009- better off field infrastructure for a few years than us at AG, Burnley got momentum and got promoted right time- thereafter parachute payments along with clever management, recruitment etc helped them consolidate and eventually build to what they are now.

Fulham in pre FFP days were big spenders under Al-Fayed- big spenders indeed- and amongst other things reached a European final, benefit of parachute payments...

In a variety of ways, all bigger fish than us last 10 years perhaps, last 15.

Swansea might be another example? Won a trophy, played in Europe, had a world star from his playing career (Laudrup)player as manager as well as their mini Barcelona type game for a few years- plus once again got ahead of us infrastructure wise moving to Liberty as far back as 2005 I think, which gave them quite a head-start. Combine it with their philosophy from Martinez onwards through arguably to the end of Laudrup's days and yeah they got ahead of us in the pecking order for the time being.

Man United have no intention to sell Henderson at this time- that's why we missed out on him and Sheffield United got him I thought.

Also @Esmond Million's Bung Our midfield weak? Individually maybe maybe not, but 4-4-2 definitely leaves us badly exposed vs the better sides especially- wasn't too weak first half of the season tbh, and particularly when we set up right IMO.

Agree 100%.

Some very one dimensional definitions of leadership on this thread.

He has said himself that he has a tendency to rip into players.

It was reported after he signed a new Manu contract that he was joining us on loan, pretty much claimed as a done deal, my point is I have little faith in us signing our 'targets' at present and that was what I was replying to.

As for the 2nd sentence, for the past 3 seasons our midfield has been in the main woeful, slow, lacking penetration, lacking pace, lacking skill, especially central midfield, where they allow opponents far too much space, offer little or no protection to our defence and certainly lack an organiser.

In the past 2 seasons we have embarked on long relegation type runs that looked as though they would never end and the midfield were the problem IMHO and I have always said the same.

But to be fair taking last season in isolation between August and December, it looked even to me that we had found a formula to make our midfield operate better and that was a higher press, but as soon as January arrived for some bizarre reason either the coach or the midfield themselves reverted back to the same 'retreating' giving up ground midfield that was responsible for the abject losing spree of the season before.

And that falls squarely at the feet of the coach.

Now confirmed as a ‘boro player.

A hard thread to start, can see why you left but just wished you could have kept the faith and done something with us. A pleasure to watch over the past 5 years, sure to get a great reception on your return and you won’t be easy to play against.
