You are exempt if you earn £26k pa or less, so it isn't the poorest it will hit but some middle-income motorists who have little choice but to regularly drive through the zone will undoubtedly feel the pinch?

Anyone know where the revenue from the charges is going?  I expect Serco or whoever is implementing the enforcement will take a huge bite, but is the rest kept by BCC or hoovered up by national government.

If the revenue went at improving the Bristol public transport network - more routes, more times etc - it would be something I suppose.

I'm still against these sort of schemes though. They just don't seem to work.

Reading this it suggests that you need to send proof that you earn less than 26k which seems very intrusive and not really something that should be any of BCCs business? So if you are a couple earning 25k each you are better off than a couple earning 26 k each, I can imagine lots of people changing car ownership titles to get around this.

I'm not sure how it'll work, but if it got me off a £9 charge then I'd send them the proof if I did earn under that amount.

I’ve just had a look at the Tesla site, £43K for the most basic model, with absolutely no extras, the nicer looking ones ( and with the distances you mention) closer to or over £100K - pie in the sky for ordinary folk like me.

Other electric vehicles are available, cost a lot less and are probably more reliable

Shocking from the so called 'socialists'. Only those who can afford newer cars or electric cars can basically drive in City centres.

Thats fine we will take our business to places that will accept all cars.

Since Starmer the labour party is in no way Socialist.

Tories with red ties.

How is the national grid going to cope with all this demand? Will they need to build more power stations? I don’t really understand how it will work on a practical level, all these electric cars plugged in to the mains? Queues of cars blocking the roads, waiting to charge or run out… how and when are they going to build the infrastructure needed?

Its an agenda - and "they" don't in reality have the practical answers..trying to run before mastering the walk IMO...

Currently it's a scattergun approach (where have we heard that before) - subsidies,,free market forces - it's a mess.

Its also only going to be short term. It wont be an exemption forever

I do wonder what impact this is going to have on our attendances.

I remember seeing a graphic of where our STHs live once and we are pretty spread out. Lots will have to travel through the zone to get to Ashton Gate.

The residents exemption ends in March so those who live in the zone would have to pay the charge to visit Ashton Gate I believe?

It will be almost impossible for most away fans to avoid the zone.

Ashton Gate is an all your round venue these days so it's clearly going to have some impact upon the buisness.

Including the Portway in the zone is ridiculous.

It's ridiculous.  Literally divides Bristol in 2.  It will have the effect of spreading traffic wider.  More people using the Suspension Bridge and the Pill route into Bristol rather than Avonmouth.

This is a perfect example of terrible decision making and leadership.  Other cities have had these zones set up for some time (eg Birmingham).

Difference is they made the area a rational, smaller area which made sense and introduced the idea of a zone slowly.  The have to expand it in time.  Bristol on the other hand has delayed its introduction whilst at the same time having a map that directly affects 1000s of people adversely and will result in displacement of traffic to odd areas.  Trouble is Bristol has never been suitable for cars.

Including the Portway/Cumberland Basin is bizzare in the extreme. They aren’t locations impacted by traffic-related poor air quality with nearby schools and dense housing. The roads are situated in a ‘green corridor’ ffs.

Haven’t looked at the latest plans but if they are anything like the originals, God help the residents of Long Ashton, Abbots Leigh, Clifton and the like. The congestion around the Suspension Bridge, the Portishead, Clevedon roads in/out of Bristol will be epic.

It seems to me they haven’t really thought this through.

Isn’t The Mayor a Gashead? That can be the only explanation.

This from a Labour Council, who are going to be affected the most? People with the least amount of money who can only afford older  cars, absolutely disgraceful decision making

Erm….. I think the impact of cars re-routing is likely to be greatest in higher income areas. So, The Mayor will have managed to piss about everyone off.

Exactly this, its what has happened in Bath, apparently the air has improved in the zone but got worse outside of zone, you just move the problem to a wider area.

Thanks Reg.

Well, my car is compliant so no charge, not that I use it very often.

I await the inevitable stories in the Bristol Post about the rise in number plates being stolen.

Does look like a huge number of cars are likely to fall in to the nothing to worry about area. Until they change it when they realise it isn't making the money they hoped.

People in higher income areas will more likely have newer cars that comply and therefore not charged, older cars will be charged or face a longer journey to avoid the charge, unless they live within the catchment then after 2022 will be charged anyway.

They will but the posher areas will now see a hell of a lot more traffic because of the restrictions is the point that I think is being made.  So the residents in those areas won’t be happy. It’s a complete and utter shit show every way around.

Bristols zone is stricter than most as well. I searched my old car, a 9 year old VW Passat 2.0 diesel and would only be charged in two areas, one being Bristol

Exactly the same for me. Yet again different rules for different people in different cities.  ‘Ing ridiculous.
