Sky Sports now tweeting that Alex Neil has been given permission to speak to Stoke. His Sunderland press conference this morning was postponed as he was "in a meeting".

Unless this is genuinely for domestic reasons, so he still lives in the area (Cheshire is very popular) & partner & maybe children do too, then it is a head scratcher.

Stoke do pay well, have a record of attracting other team’s managers but are not in Sunderland’s league in terms of size.

You never know what is going on behind the scenes but this is a really surprising one.

Be a shame if Alex Neil goes to Stoke. We'd have to watch another one of his sides ****house a win against us at AG.

Perfect fit for Stoke

Spoiling , time wasting , over physical

Perfect

Jumping ship - Another reason to dislike him

* Spooky they’ve just played Sunderland - clearly no chats took place then ?

Can't stand Barton but he's done a good job at the Blue few, so unsurprising he's been linked

One way or another he dragged them back up - mostly due to the ridiculous signing of Anderson, but the point is not only was Anderson presumably happy to sign for Barton, but Newcastle were impressed enough with Barton to believe it would be a good temporary career move for one of their top young talents.

So despite Barton's d******d public persona and off the field shenanigans, very surprisingly he does seem to be respected in the game for his coaching ability enough for bigger clubs to entrust the progression of their players to his care.

He is in a long line, mostly unbroken, of gobby Rovers managers but this one does seem to have galvanised the majority of their fans.

It's quite possible he will continue to do well there so imo. the sooner he departs Bristol, for Stoke, another club, or for any other reason, the better.

Rovers fans (apart from the few of the few who have apparently boycotted) would be devastated, so that would be a bonus!

Apart from the stadium/support side, I suppose the teams have similar potential and of course Stoke’s owners are loaded and genuine local supporters.

And if home life is important that is a lot better than a long distance commute.

I bet @TomF Sunderland counterpart is having fun on the their forum, the meltdown on twitter from their fans has been huge. Cancelling season card direct debits, swearing never to set foot in the ground again while those in charge are there.

Something must be going quite wrong behind the scenes for him to make that move, surely.

Are they really that stupid ?

So why take the job in the first place ?

Sounds like it’s done. Crikey. Their board must be truly awful to deal with for him to jump ship so easily!

Got to be much more to this than meets the eye, wanted to sign players they refused, chairman repeatedly meddles, that sort of thing.

Stoke has chewed up & spat out plenty of managers who have been successful before (& after) being with them, a brave move.

Just looked at the Sunderland forum and they don't seem at all surprised. Something about a power struggle with the DOF?

Is that the one who insisted they sign Defoe when LJ didn't want him? That went well.

Put it this way Macca and LJ had no idea they were getting the boot, came as a complete surprise. (Source: Macca)

I did mention back in January that LJ wasn’t happy with some of the ‘influences’ within Sunderland. That they sacked him when comfortably in the playoff zone said a lot. Now Neil, who gained success, is clearly finding those ‘influences’ difficult to work under.

As I’d mentioned before, there are people making decisions at Sunderland who aren’t the so-called owner.

Plus if the hefty salary of £1.5m per year is to be believed then no surprise he has left.. without doubt would be a massive increase on his wage at Sunderland I’d have thought.

He’s said he wasn’t backed, which is just a mega cop out imo. Same as when a new manager comes in and says players aren’t fit enough or something. They’ve signed 8(?) players this window with another one incoming today by all accounts. Hardly feeding off 1 or 2 free transfer is he

Absolutely, sounds either like he didn’t get on with the owners or it was the location.

That may depend on whether the players signed were the ones he wanted perhaps.
