His interview with Mark Ashton after Holden was appointed was absolutely stellar sports broadcasting, top drawer stuff. He’ll be sadly missed.

His encounters with Steve Lansdown were box office too. He always pressed Steve firmly but fairly.

Given Steve never speaks to the fans directly anymore, Geoff was really our only gatekeeper to holding him to account.

An excellent second career at the BBC, not an easy job, especially starting out at an older age.

Sports presenters seem to get more stick than anyone in the media, every tournament there’ll be people moaning about Adrian Childs, Gary Lineker, Mark Pougach, Laura Woods etc. So for Geoff to come from a Rovers stalwart to winning over the red half of the City tells you all you need to know.

The chances of us getting as good a quality coverage from next season must be slim.

A great sports presenter and articulate broadcaster who really knew his stuff due to his experience at the heart of the game and for that reason was always fascinating to listen to.

As others have said, for him to be so well respected by City fans with his Gas background speaks volumes. Thank you Geoff.

"Really appreciate you giving up the time to talk to us today by the way, Steve"

Repeated about 4 times per interview ?

Certainly knew how to soften up his interviewees.

Geoff always asked very probing questions of whoever he had as a guest. I really enjoyed it when Nige was on - they had played against each other in previous lives and chatted like old friends. Lots of mutual respect between them.

He also spoke at Senior Reds a number of times and was always asked about playing against City. He had one amusing tale about Robbie Turner and explained the photo of him grabbing Bob Taylor by shirt by the throat - it wasn’t how it looked.

He was telling Taylor to stop arguing with the referee otherwise he was looking at a sending off……top bloke is Geoff.

I remember seeing his father playing for Liverpool when they were in Second Division. Geoff wasn't the greatest footballer to earn a living but he was a good, honest defender back in the days when defenders could dish it out and take it back.

He has been a superb sports reporter especially of football and he will be missed by supporters of all the West Country clubs. Wishing him a healthy and enjoyable retirement. He'll soon realise that he'll never have enough time to do everything he wants from retirement.

Definitely. It's well known that Nige doesn't have the easiest relationship with the media and can be awkward when he wants to be, but it's evident that he has a lot of respect for Geoff, mainly with him being an ex-pro of similar vintage, but also because he's a damn good journalist and broadcaster who knows his stuff and will ask the right questions.

The s*gs have a similar thread saying the same things as we are and a couple of them have said that it says so much about the man that he could turn us lot into fans of him and his shows. Fair shout IMO.

Spot on.

To be honest loads of local journalism is amateur hour but GT was always a class above.

He combined the fact that he’d actually played the game to a decent level with the ability to ask probing, well researched questions. That takes real skill.

Virtually no chance that his replacement is going to be of the same calibre.

As someone who has absolutely no time for Rovers the fact that he is universally liked in Bristol is a testament to him.

Hope he has a great retirement but he’ll be very sadly missed.

Played against him in a couple of football tournaments, back in the day when he was playing alongside Gerry Sweeney from memory.

Always found him well balanced in his analysis, despite his links to rovers, always seemed to think him and Ian Alexander were the epitome of that stubborn rovers side of late 80’s and early 90’s.

Seem to remember it was his dad that scouted Ian Rush and Alan Hansen for Liverpool probably amongst others?

happy retirement Geoff
