Birmingham City at home match thread

Recommended Posts

We welcome Birmingham City to BS3. Another bumper crowd is expected with Birmingham having sold 2,500 tickets.

Last season it finished 4-2, https://youtu.be/EjWfg8MmLk4

US-based Shelby Companies Limited (SCL) completed its takeover of the Championship's longest-serving club Birmingham City, in July. A statement released by Knighthead Capital Management confirmed that the previously Chinese-owned club now has new controlling shareholders. It said that its "affiliate company" SCL now has 45.98% ownership of Birmingham City Limited. SCL also has full ownership of Blues' ground at St Andrew's.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/66192434

They signed Leeds United forward Tyler Roberts for an undisclosed fee, https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/65980004 and Koji Miyoshi from Belgian top flight side Royal Antwerp on a two-year deal, https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/65985623

In late June they signed full-back Ethan Laird from Manchester United for an undisclosed fee.

They added winger Siriki Dembele for an undisclosed fee from AFC Bournemouth. Dembele joined on a three-year contract after Tahith Chong left the Blues to move to Premier League newcomers Luton Town.

They added Wolves defender Dion Sanderson for an undisclosed fee on a four-year deal. The 23-year-old spent last season on loan with Blues and made 31 Championship appearances.

Keshi Anderson signed a one-year deal.

They also signed defender Lee Buchanan from German club Werder Bremen for an undisclosed fee.

BBC’s perspective on Brum: New ownership has brought fresh optimism to St Andrew’s, with American Tom Wagner and his Knighthead group in control – and now the added excitement of a global superstar like Tom Brady, the NFL’s GOAT, getting on board too.

The lingering stadium repairs are also close to completion. Full capacity is set to be restored by the end of November, a factor that could be a significant boost to Blues’ home form.

Technical director Craig Gardner has again operated within a tight budget to replenish the squad, with the excesses of the previous owners still being felt when it comes to Financial Fair Play.

Full-backs Ethan Laird and Lee Buchanan feel like an upgrade and the permanent signing of loanees Dion Sanderson and Krystian Bielik give John Eustace’s side a solid spine, while Tyler Roberts and Siriki Dembele add to the attacking threat.

Japanese attacking midfielder Koji Miyoshi is something of a wildcard, while talented teenager George Hall had a breakout season last time out and could just be the most gifted player in the group.

Expectations may need to be calmed initially. Another season of Championship safety remains the main on-field priority while all the off-field adjustments are made to rejuvenate the club and re-engage supporters.

George Hall has returned to training after missing their opening three games of the season. He is expected to be available for this game after he took part in training last week. Hall wasn't included in the squad to face Leeds United on Saturday as he builds up his fitness following a disrupted pre-season campaign.

Hall's return is timely for Eustace, who will be without Tyler Roberts for an extended period due to a calf problem, picking up an injury in training last Friday, https://www.birminghamworld.uk/sport/football/birmingham-city/bristol-city-v-birmingham-city-injury-news-as-5-ruled-and-3-doubts-4258914

Their expected line up, https://www.birminghammail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/gallery/birmingham-city-lineup-bristol-miyoshi-27537008

For us the game will come too soon for Andi Weimann’s recovery from a heel complaint, and Ross McCrorie is still sidelined with illness. Tommy Conway is still out long term.

Our head-to-head record isn’t great

Won: 19

Fourth official: Scott Oldham

Their profile on NP: https://www.bcfc.com/news/all/dugout-watch-bristol-city and his presser: https://youtu.be/aBkJ0y1ILng

As well as sharing the BCFC abbreviation with us they have had the same start to the season as us, a 1-1 draw, a cup victory and a 1-0 win. They drew away at Swansea on the opening day, https://youtu.be/0xhqSD6D6Rk beat Cheltenham in the Carabao Cup and last Saturday they won against Leeds at home https://youtu.be/BwC2mG5gFlc thanks to a 91st minute penalty, in a game of few chances Brum had two shots on target and Leeds just one effort on target, which was exactly what happened at the Den where we had two efforts on target to Millwall’s one.

There will be a round of applause on the 47th minute for Lee Parker who passed away in May after a 12 month battle with a brain tumour at the young age of 47.

Also life-long City fan Tim Damsell passed away recently. His family and friends would be grateful to all who can take part in a minutes applause on Saturday in the 65th minute.

Last season’s encounters were probably my favourite and least favourite games of the season. So hoping for a repeat of our home win and nothing like our disastrous away game.

I think they’ve got 3000 fans attending, I’m all for big away crowds, spent too many years watching us in the lower leagues with a couple hundred away fans. Days like tomorrow are just great for atmosphere.

Great comments by the Manager and The Pringmeister......by encouraging supporters to make Ashton Gate a volatile and hostile venue.  As NP states, it is up to the players to lift the crowd and engage them?   So, Let's please  try to create a "boot quaking atmos!?"  Easily said, but sometimes hard to  engender, as it can go very tense and quiet on occasions?         Hopefully our boy's will create enough excitement to stir up the crowd..........and if they do, it would be good to think that supporters will respond, and make the visiting pheckers be knocked out by the wave of noise... !!

Lets try to recreate what the England ladies did when they shut up those Arrogant Aussies a couple of days ago....Ha!!     3-1 will do fine?

It's often the Lansdown Stand that has the lowest occupancy rate, given ticket prices no surprise and also it is the biggest stand

E34, E29, E28 all listed as being sold out although time will tell.

Could never understand why the tickets are so much more expensive in the Lansdown compared to the Dolman really.

The thing I find most irritating though is all the empty seats in the prawn sandwich section.

3,000 droning Yam yams will give us an atmosphere todays and I hope we are able to outsing the whining sods.

I do confess to being a bit worried about this one though seeing that they were good enough to take 3 points off Leeds last week.

It's not cheap elsewhere -

I'm taking my 12 year old grandson to the WBA match - lower Dolman - £61 ....

It's not about the money as it's always special for us to attend when possible - just doesn't sit right somehow

It'll be a tight game I reckon. Both sides have made an identical start, they've got a feel good factor, new investors, it won't be like laat year where we got 2 up in 20 mins and Semenyo was right into them.

If it is like that and we make another fast start I'll be pleasantly surprised!

Ticket wise, just the poshest stand isn't it. Okay I'm generalising! The stand with the corporates, the Directors, the Upper being as it is.

One thing that annoys, tickets in the South are like gold dust- they are or would be more affordable but sadly seems the modern way of it, £62 is quite steep albeit is that with a membership or without? Think a membership £5 off tickets isn't it.

Conundrum as to what our best starting 11 is at the moment.

We have looked most creative with Roberts & Mehmeti on the lhs, but do you leave out Pring who has been solid defensively just not reached the highs of last season supporting attacks. If you start Mehmeti,  do you switch Bell to rhs (he is predominately right footed), but although Cornick seems a bit of a headless chicken, our 2 league goals have come from his really good long throws, so do you keep him as rhs attacker? Remember Rory Delap (who I'd say was average at best as a player) made a career out of having a dangerous long throw!

Sykes was poor against Millwall, but his track record is good playing the rhs attacker role.

Then in m/f James seems nailed on starter, Knight has to play ACM role, and I'd start Naismith ahead of Williams if he is fully fit.

Nice problems to have.

I'm not ready to drop Cam Pring yet but Roberts is certainly going to make him work for his place.  Mehmeti from the bench maybe but his output has not yet convinced me that we should start him.  Naismith looks good in midfield and I would start with him but I'm afraid that Harry Cornick looks about as much use as an icecream cornet so far.

Sykesy is a bit of a conundrum.  He's had some brilliant games but not so good in others.  He still has a lot more to offer down the right than Cornick though.

It has to be Bell and Wells up top I suppose.

Biggest newest most expensive least used stand . Doesn’t make any sense

It’s a really interesting match-up today.  Two back-4s (first time this season), two similar sides strength-wise I’d guess after a decent round of recruitment for Brum.

Data-wise it’s evenly matched too, albeit just two games in, so can’t read two much into it…yet.

Defences likely to be on top, might be a set-piece goal that decides it.

Patience the key for me today.

Some interesting match-ups.  Nige talked about them being lopsided. Great thread from jbcfc on twitter:

which goes into detail re Laird, their RB, and how he likes to play high. That gives Bell a bit of work to do w/o the ball, but I also think it gives him a huge opportunity in behind if we can win it early.  Some of you may recall Laird for Swansea 2 seasons back.  Quite typical of modern day FBs, can get forward, but not great defensively.  Sanderson is gonna have to cover that a bit too, meaning Nahki might have a bit more space.

Another match-up will be ex-Derby teammates, Bielik and Knight.  Bielik is a big imposing CM who provides good physicality in their MF, but more than capable on the ball.  We need Knight to “rat” around him, Bielik has a tendency to lose discipline if things go against him.

Finally, Tanner v Sir Ricky (Siriki) Dembele.  Probably just what George wants, an afternoon where he can concentrate on his defensive attributes.  Having said that, Dembele not one to track back so Cornick or Sykes may get a lot of 1v1s v Buchanan.  When Cornick is on the pitch I’d suggest we can go a bit more aerial / diag to the right.

Would not surprise me if this ends of a draw.
