  1. Look at the crowd verses the gas in 1958. https://cutt.ly/t5AE4sR
  2. Works fine for me. Just go to the pathe news archive website. Put Bristol City Football in the search box...and a few related films come up to watch for free.
  3. The words I used on my part were poorly phrased. This was taken from an email from him after when we played them up there. All conversations have been along the same theme all season. I agree a big chunk of the league are equal...equally average. Very similar to so many games we have played this year. We are bang average for 80 minutes, but have two or three special players who have the quality to produce a moment (Ndiaye / Berge / McAtee) AND then the defence to see out a game. This sounds ridiculous but I can honestly say we have only played well on occasions this season and most of the time do not look like a top two side. After last night it will take a cock-up of immense proportions to not get there. Would not want to be in the play-offs with Luton / Middlesborough (and my guess West Brom and Preston) as we would not get through, they all “want it” more than us.
  4. Thanks for sharing the memory. My late father was also at that game.
  5. You're welcome. I won't be John. I've got too much going on sadly. Have fun though. ?
  6. ....and other games from past years, some obscure. Scroll down. Enjoy. ? https://cutt.ly/r5P53Zd If the link to games doesn't work. Put Bristol City Football in the search bar on the site.
  7. I agree with that Harry. It's been very average across the whole league. A friend of mine who's been a lifetime season ticket holder at Sheff Utd can't believe they are going up. He said they've been really lucky all season. Haven't played particularly good football or controlled games. He said when playing us, we were the team that looked more like the promotion hopeful. With their now financial cash flow problems and questionable ownership, I can see them coming straight back down with a very low points return. Sadly a season opportunity missed for us.
  8. When I watched it, it reminded me of a console football game. ?
  9. This is taken from the link I shared above. And correlates with what you say... Current academy scouting systems and rate of success In the last decade of football, the scouting systems of so many football clubs have seen a complete revamp due to advancement in technology, especially in the field of Machine Learning. The scouts are now using advanced tools that help them not only analyze players but allow them to bring data and information on each and every player they scout in a single place which makes their job a lot easier when they are comparing these players. This allows them to make data driven decisions and reach smarter conclusions at the end of the day. Timon Pauls, the former Director of Football and Chief Scout of Bayern Munich revealed in an interview with the Professional Football Scouts Association that in the current ecosystem of football, the teams are assessing players not only on their technical abilities, but their physical development, mentality, speed and weather if there is a role currently at the club they can fit in the foreseeable future. At the end of the day there might only be one player in 100,000 that is able to pass all of those tests and despite advancements in the scouting department, a very important thing you need on your side is luck. In fact, one study found that, if success is measured by wealth, then the most successful people are almost certainly those with moderate talent and remarkable luck.
  10. I think there is some vanity as well. After all he has spoken of leaving a legacy for people to remember him by. Nothing wrong with that, as we've benefited from this legacy that he will pass on. He could have put all his money into other interests instead. Like his Botswana safari/ conservation interests.
  11. Exactly what I was told re keeping players just as ' numbers'.
  12. What was sad in the documentary I gave in the link above, was how some parents saw their kids talent as a way of getting out of poverty. When they interviewed the kids about their dreams if they made it...they didn't mention their football goals, but instead what material possessions they could buy for themselves and family. We know this goes on in other countries, but wasn't expecting it so close to home.
  13. This is a really good article and throws up some interesting stats and info. https://idsoccer.com/how-many-academy-players-make-it-pro/
  14. As you say it's a tricky one...as the system needs numbers. It's a very difficult one for coaches. As they have to be realistic with parents and kids that stats prove the majority won't make it. Straight away that info is a negative in their heads. They are told to work hard...and if they work hard they can possibly make it. After working as hard as they can...they are still released. That knock back is incredibly hard for a kid to take. Yes it's life...and the saying ' what doesn't kill you makes you stronger' is easy to say, but harder to live by at that age. The psychological side of the game is just, as if not more important than the physical.
  15. This series, free to watch on C4, gives a really good insight into the young kids progress at a professional academy, and the emotions a family goes through. It's an eye opener in some places, especially how soon the Agents get involved. https://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/academy/channel-4-to-air-documentary-series-on-crystal-palace-academy-football-dreams-the-academy/ Academies look after their players much better these days. Not so long ago, they knew only a few would make it...however...running an academy you need a team/squad to play. They knew the majority wouldn't make it...you encourage and develop and give all of them the best chance to make it. But they still kept kids on, even knowing their was no chance of making it...as you need numbers. Releasing at the right time imo is the best thing to do for a young en. Don't keep them if you know they won't make it.
  16. Regardless of whether it was a sending off or not...the reaction by Joe is ridiculous. But it goes on all the time. It's now seen as part of the 'game'. Fans hate it...some managers say they do. However imo, it's something that is tolerated to gain an advantage. It's very much a British thing to play fair. Where as in a lot of cultures ' cheating' is seen as being clever, and instead of repulsed...it's applauded. Gaining an advantage in any way, is part of their life. I remember having a discussions with friends in France and Italy about the British culture of queuing in an orderly fashion, and first come, first served. They just don't comprehend it. It's alien to them. If someone gets ahead of them, they may not like it, but they 'admire' the person for being more clever than them. The next time they up their game...and so it goes on...in pretty much all parts of their lives. Football now reflects that attitude. Cheating the ref to gain an advantage is seen as clever. I'd love to know the conversations between team mates after games when actions such as Joe's happen. Do they congratulate one another, or tell them they look like a right pussy and to man the **** up? I know the answer...it's the former. It is a ridiculous scenario, players get irate when it happens to them, and call the perpetrator a ' cheating bastard ' , but they'll go and do it the following game.
  17. How did I forget this gem. Great baseline. And this...another great baseline.
  18. That's funny...I was going to post exactly the same tracks, but thought the vocals from tape would not count them as Instrumental. Great band.
  19. Off one of my favourite albums. Dazzle Ships the track. The music imo, depicts the search, the attack, the drowning to the depths, the eventual peace that comes. Scared the shit out of me when I first heard it.
  20. He used the edges of his skis on the hard pack snow in the crevasse to stop and grip the sides with. Terrifying. Those can go hundreds of metres down.
  21. ....this, an avalanche or tree well have to be your worst fear.
  22. Personally I don't think he will. It may have something to do with the players we have available in academy's. Or it may have something to do with that type of system possibly influences the players more in their development.
  23. Yes I noticed our U21s have been playing three at the back as well. I mentioned it in another thread not so long ago. I haven't a clue why.
  24. Only going by what I've read online. Who knows.
  25. Didn't realise he was born in what now is Germany.
