First and foremost, this was a football related decision.

Course it is. Its what I've been saying the whole time about football clubs somehow being a beacon of social justice and showing zero tolerance towards discrimination of any kind.

No they're not. It makes them feel good about themselves but when the chips are down, it all goes out the window.

Just watched a YouTube video of 2 United fans talking about the greenwood situation. They believe the club knew about what he'd "allegedly" done back in late 2020 and covered it up because they wanted to finish in the top 4 and win the Europa league, and if Sir Alex knew and turned a blind eye to it then his statue should be taken down and the stand renamed.

Glad my questions were taken in the way it was meant, just a general thought really.

I’d be surprised if Rashford didn’t know who Wiley was, but it’s plausible he didn’t know about the comments.

I think you’re probably right about Tommy Robinson example though not specifically in that circumstance. It’s a little different if the questionable person is bigger than the people they’re having a photo with - I was trying to think of a better example but couldn’t but get the point you’re making

Yeah I knew what you meant by it.

I get my example wasnt quite apples with apples but I was multitasking and couldn't think of anyone else off the top of my head.

How about David Starkey? As if any footballer would be in a photo with him anyway ?

Did Wiley ask for a photo with them? Did they know Wiley’s history?

It begs the question should footballers worry about who asks them for a photo? How do they know the random fan in the crowd that asks for a photo hasnt recently posted controversial comments?

I realise this is different as Wiley is well known in his own right so perhaps they should have known, but it’s an interesting discussion. Should footballers (or anyone for that matter) be checking the background of everyone that asks for their photo?

It's a perfectly legitimate point to make. Begs the question did they ask him for a photo and only apologised after the backlash, or did he ask them. I don't know whether they knew who he was or not. I'm too trusting a person and treat it in good faith when someone says something to me (it's a problem of mine) but he's a very popular artist who was banned from all social media because of what he said about Jewish people. He's well known enough in my opinion for them to know who he was. Rashford said he got pulled in for a photo opportunity in a tweet (or his pr company said at least) ....

If 2 of our white academy players had a pic with Tommy Robinson and used the same excuse Rashford and Lingard's pr company came out with "it was a photo op, wasn't aware of any comments" , would it be as glossed over? I'd say not. I'd say they'd be out of here ASAP. But that's hypothetical and some don't like those on here.

Almost certainly. Their sponsors will want them distanced from anything to do with him. Act first, protect their interests and they can always be friends at a later date if it’s appropiate.

Same goes for sky, bt, BBC. Protect the brand.

  5. Not been a good week for Man Utd.

Started off with Rashford and Lingard spending time and being photo'd with drill rapper Wiley, who I can only describe as a Nazi sympathiser based on what he said about Jewish people. Both Rashford and Lingard asked their pr companies to put up half assed apologies on twitter and must use the same one due to the strange choice of the same word. (if you know, you know)

And now news about Greenwood has come out. More to this story but I don't want to speculate because of legalities but if you piece things together, it becomes clearer. Like why Southgate didn't select him after Iceland. More to it than just the hotel quarentine breech.

I can recall some reports a few years back (from sources I’d trust) of at least one of our players acting a complete nob to bar staff  ( female) in a night club and burning £50 notes to ‘ prove’ how rich he was, could that have been a forerunner to worse behaviour, should someone have reported it?

Jermaine Jenus did that at a bar an old colleague worked in when he played for Newcastle. Kicked him straight out.

He's lucky; many other dads would want to show him what oven cleaner tastes like after seeing the photos and listening to the audio.

One city fan I follow on twitter said her dad wouldn't be so forgiving with that response if greenwood worked at McDonald's.

Just after his future son in laws big bank balance.

Anyone know if this is true, or a made up photo you get on the internet?

That's what I was alluding to in my post earlier but stopped short of saying what it was. There's a few more of those dotted around.

Odd statement from her Dad.  I’d not be worried about the police investigating him, I’d be more worried about them trying to stop me going after him if it was my daughter

On a serious note, man united would have known about this days ago.

Imagine the inteligence they have on players?

If rumour is to be believed, something terrible happened in late 2020 of a Manchester based footballer. Many thought it was tied in the Mendy story, but it was a separate issue.

Greenwood missed an Everton game unexpectedly and the club said it was in "illness"

I won't say it in here due to legalities and thread closures, etc, but it's not hard to find.

Carpet brushing at its finest if it's been known this whole time and they've continuously ignored it hoping it goes away.

I wonder how many more incidents of this nature will have to happen before professional football wakes up and realises it has a particular problem with this kind of thing.

Far too many incidents for such a small group of men. And we certainly don't get to hear about everything that goes on either.

    It won't.

I was jumped on in another thread saying that footballers needed to look at themselves but they won't, it's too easy to just look the other way at other things and they won't dare criticise their fellow professionals.

  11. Time for Man Utd to put their money where their mouth is.

Mendy wasn't suspended by man city while his investigations were ongoing. Has been now but only once he was charged and in jail. First team player.

Bissouma wasn't suspended by Brighton and his investigations are still ongoing. Their best player.

Everton suspended their player in the summer with the child sex crime but he wasn't likely to be first choice at the start of the season.

Just suspend him now pending investigations and if nothing is found untoward (photoshop pics, fake soundbite etc), then bring him back.

On the face of it, it does look very damming but let the necessary authorities do their work.

Considering clubs were able to fit Vennegoor of Hesselink on his playing shirt, I think you can fit anything.

Perhaps you’d like to ask Pep Guardiola what he thought of Marlon when he played for us

Probably never heard of him before the cup games and hasn't given him a second thought since.

The best managers get things wrong

"It was important to me to leave an organisation in the strongest possible shape and I believe I have done so,"

Sir Alex said that when he retired from man utd manager...... How's that gone?

Great. Now I'm imagining Batman with a Brummy accent.

One of the first things I learned up here, black country folk hate it when people say they have brummie accents.

I still can't tell the difference and I've been up here yonks.

Thought you live in Gotham City mate?

    More crime in wolves.

First time I heard molineux test their new alarm, I thought there was a formula one race going on around the ring road. There's a video online of the smoke coming out the ground, you can hear it.

Just checked and Buffon is playing for Parma again in Serie B. There can't be many footballers left still playing who played in the 90s.

    Yeah he's back there.

By sheer coincidence, this guy has signed for a new club this week.

There was something a while back, I think it was once Totti retired, it was only Buffon and this guy where were on every version of a fifa game ever released once they got naming rights for the players.

I go to AG to be entertained and DW produced the most attractive football seen at AG in the last 30 years. GJ nor SC got anywhere close to matching it.

Don't agree with the last sentence. But football under Wilson was very good, albeit it was never in the championship (as it is now). Tinman, Tommy Doc, peacock, Scotty. Great fun.

I bet that Italian keeper didn't go on to much bigger and better things..

Amazingly, one of the best players to have never won the champions league. Lost the final 3 times. There's a fair few of them and he's by far the best keeper never to have won it. Brazilian Ronaldo and lothar matthaus are the two other huge stand outs when you consider how great they were and who they played for. None of them won the champions league. Yet djimi traore, Paul lambert and Ross Turnball all have champions league winners medals.

He won the uefa Cup with parma though. I suspect he's happy with his world Cup winners medal as well.

Did you know that Gianluigi Buffon had played at Ashton Gate?

Was looking back at some old memories and remenber attending this game when I was still in single digits for age and surprised to see that I've seen Buffon play.

Anyone else remember this a bit better than me?

Not many of the England squad made it big.

    https://www.11v11.com/matches/england-v-italy-12-february-1997-259140/

Yep. I was at that game and I was right behind the goal in the Atyeo stand that night. Great to know that he went on to achieve what he did and I saw him play on his early days. He would have been at Parma and they had a great team at the time, as anyone who used to watch football italia on channel 4 would be able to confirm.

And from someone who used to play a lot of championship manager back in the day, some of those names bring back a host of memories.
