  1. I don't pretend that it's scientific but as an example a tennis professional plays every other day in most tournaments and his time on court can be significantly longer than a football match. Yes he gets small breaks between games but the play is frequently more intense and explosive than that required by a footballer.
  2. Injuries aside, if a football player can't recover from a game within 48 hours he ain't much of an athlete. A modern game may last nearer to 100 minutes than 90 but it rarely requires a player to make intense effort over that time. They train ofcourse but no more intently than participants in other sports who must look at footballers and what they earn with dismay.
  3. That's a fair and valid point. I imagine the thinking was that Eliott was never a midfielder until we converted him as prior he had always been a RB and should therefore have been comfortable there. However it backfired as haven't not played there for so long he looked rusty. While I was never a great fan of Eliott in midfield it was what the team was used to and it hurt us until we found our feet late in the game.
  4. Despite how his tenure ended a very good choice for me. He came in with a remit to change the football side of the club top to bottom and did just that. We were so close to the Premier League which is why I take exception to the OP's comment that we failed to rise to the occasion. We list McCombe on the eve of the final and Bradley Orr not far in which made a big difference to us. We conceded as we failed to stop a cross coming in from our right (where Orr would have been) although it took a tremendous strike nevertheless. Even then we were denied a Trundle equaliser by the thickness of Michael Turner's thigh. Hull fans I spoke were convinced we'd have won had it gone to Extra time as they were out on their feet.
  5. Liverpool are so much better when Henderson plays. It's not necessarily what he does on the ball but his presence alone seems to give them a lift. Having said that, apart from the Tarkowski header Everton have been poor. They have to push up further and give Simms support.
  6. I've said it before but I like Keith Stroud. Yes, we've sometimes got the wrong side of some of his decisions but he's a truly independent referee who's not swayed by players, crowds or events that surround him. He gives it as he sees it.
  7. Cut off point for 10 bookings is week 32 of the season. 15 bookings by the end of the season would mean the player would start the next season with a 3 match ban. Anyone who accumulates 20 bookings by the end of the season will be banned at the discretion of the EFL disciplinary panel.
  8. Everton mints? All I can say is Nuttal's Mintoes.
  9. Very true. Happens frequently when I go to Bristol O2 Academy and I end up in the queue at the window for them to print off my ticket so I can gain entry. As for the point made about a £75 phone us not a major expense, I agree but that's not the end cost. You still need to run the phone and I can understand someone's annoyance about having to consistently pay for a service that they don't want or feel they should need.
  10. Establishing a link up with Melksham (my home town club) it seems as Joe joins Mac Boyd at the infiLED Arena.
  11. Has anyone enquired from a bookie what odds they would offer on usnot getting a penalty this season. Placing a bet might be the only way of ensuring we get one.
  12. The whole night was unseemly by reports, with Manc 'fans' racially abusing Liverpool disabled supporters too. I sincerely hope they find the Liverpool 'fan', manage to convict and get him (her?) some jail time to go alongside the lifetime football ban that should be received. Life bans for the racists too.
  13. Nearly 30 years ago, when Martin Tyler used to commentate on Dutch football for ESPN, one of the features was interviewing the referee after the game. I just don't see the problem with refs explaining their decisions or saying they didn't see it. Like everyone else Referees are allowed to make genuine mistakes, and they make a lot less than players do, and those mistakes could cost us but a post match interview would make it seem more palatable.
  14. Time to get on my soapbox again. The reason these teams are permanent members of the farce that us the 'Champions' league is due to its corrupt format. That there is more than one club from a nation is a farce as many clubs in the competition are champions of **** all. Unlike you I don't want to see Real playing PSG for the umpteenth time and especially don't want to see them given privileged entry into the TV lucrative league stages over teams that are actually Champions of their nation. UEFA should be seeking to improve the standards of teams and leagues across Europe which could come around sooner if these clubs were allowed access to lucrative TV monies and games against the big sides instead of pandering to the privileged few. Its especially ridiculous that English clubs should still enjoy the privilege of 4 teams in the Champions league when it's based on successes over 30 years ago pre Premier League. Between 1967 and 1992 English clubs won 22 European trophies (at a time when it was much harder to qualify) as opposed to the paltry 11 trophies won in the 30 years since the Premier League's formation. Real Madrid alone has won more European Cup/Champions League trophies than the entirety if English clubs since PL formation.
  15. I would disagree about Huddersfield which looks decent from the outside or from an aerial shot but is a major disappointment once you're inside. Derby is a clone of Middlesbrough's Riverside and everytime I look at the roof I see Wolf from Gladiators crawling upside down on it. Although the family stand side is a little disappointing I rather like Deepdale especially the floodlight pylons at each corner .
  16. 3 managers in a season usually means relegation. With the likes of Blackpool and Rotherham in the mix though perhaps one or more of them will survive this time.
  17. There are no rare newts in the UK. While the great crested newt has protected status in Europe the UK is a stronghold for the species and there are clear development mitigation measures to follow.
  18. Opi is now playing for Rochester New York FC in the US third tier. The club is co-owned by Jamie Vardy.
  19. With over 2300 dead across southern Turkey and Northern Syria one can only pray that he and many others are found safe. It is pleasing at least that aid had been swift including the Israeli government sending aid to Syria.
  20. Easy peasy lemon squeezy. Ticket email arrived, I just have to print it off or save to phone.
  21. Unless UEFA do something I cannot see the Commission handing down any stringent measures. Cynical perhaps but unlike Roman Abramovich and the Russian connections this affects the Abu Dhabi deputy PM a member of their Royal Family. Middle Eastern investment in the UK is huge and, while it will be officily denied, expect some subtle pressure to be applied to arrive at an acceptable (to them) result. The Arab League sticks together and a sleight on one is a slight on them all.
