  1. It's not so much a captain that's needed , but players acting less robotic unable to adapt to what's happening.

Worse even become even more emboldened leading to more errors. Many sports teams suffer from this; the inability to adjust to the situation.

It seems unfathomable that half the team weren't emploring naismith to simply hit the channels for the next 5/10 minutes while the right to play is earnt again.

Everyone seems to have bought into how the manager wants them to play , the effort is there , the will is there. But there is a wild difference between error in application and making that same error over and over.

Of course this might not be the fault of the players , perhaps they are told to play that way and win enough personal battles were all good.

But all the same, what I/we really need to start seeing is adjustments when the other team is on top. Earn the right to pkay , then do so.

Yesterday we tried to be expansive when QPR were on top from our errors ,they had that zip about them , then walked right into what they wanted us to do.

Playing out from the back is great , being wide and expansive is great. But unless you are a team consisting of the worlds greatest players , you kinda have to accept that it's not possible for every minute of every game.

Make the adjustments , or go all season needing 3 a game.

I've never seen a game live, but growing up watching films like Brewster's Millions, always wanted to catch a game. Going to Seattle next week and have a ticket to see the Mariners, looking forward to it (but not the $17 a beer prices, especially with this appalling exchange rate!!!)

If you go as a two and eat , 1 meal is enough.

We had chicken and fries for 1 between two at Yankee stadium, didn't get close to finishing.

Bit happier today though presumably? :)

Just out of interest I don't have a team, I just developed an interest whilst holidaying in the US. I take a bit of interest in the Pittsburgh Pirates, because they had a winter training camp near where we had our timeshare in Florida, and I saw them training one day.

I also visited the Fenway when we toured New England, even in a traditional City like Boston it looked the oldest building in America. :)

I really enjoy the game though and the similarities and differences to cricket, I would love to go and see a live game, it's on my bucket list.

We all start for whatever random reason.

I started in 1996, Channel 5 world series . Yankees v padres, i picked the Yankees , and basically started from there.

Fenway is one seriously old place, essentially you are taking 33% of united States history in one building.

Wrigley field also had the same essence.

I didn't see a game in either  but did go round the outside, grabbing the parts of history i could.

Yes, I'm a Sox fan, which recently hasn't been much fun at all.

Went to watch the two games versus the Yankees in London a couple of years ago, which was amazing (though, obviously they lost both games).

I was introduced to baseball by @The turtlewho is a Yankees fan (don't hold it against him). It annoys him greatly that before I started supporting the Sox, they hadn't won a World Series since 1918, but within a year of me starting to support them they'd won it (coming from three games behind in the Championship series to beat the Yankees 4-3 ). What's more, in that period they've won it a total of four times, and the Yankees have won it just once.

I can never erase the memory of that awful awful series. You being part of it just made it so so so much worse.

Ps and it hasn't been great since ?

Same when I saw Valencia v Atleti. I'd always assumed it was partly to do with the heat.

    August = heat related

    September to a point

You also have to consider 10pm is tv prime time. Even usual programes (eg the voice, soaps - start at 2200)

There is absolutely no culture of away support in Spanish football at all.

Most games are watched by almost exclusively home support only, plus tourists at the Barca, Real Madrid games.

    Curiously:

In a league Derby basically no away fans go

But in the champions , everyone wants to.

    (see the same with barca)

Only been to Norwich once. Had tickets to the game, and then England made the (rugby union) World Cup final and as we wouldn't make it back to Bristol in time to watch the game, me and @The turtledecided to stay overnight and watch the game in Norwich.

Turns out no bugger cares about rugby in Norwich so nowhere was showing the game! Ended up watching it in a bar, with a few other people, while everyone else drank and danced around us.

    Strange place, Norwich.

Also the only place I've eve been kicked out of a club , to this day I have No idea why. (straight after my drunk was spilt at that)

    So yeah, strange place.

There's also the small matter of my father getting married that weekend, but not telling me until after , as he knew I had tickets for Norwich away.

Norwich away has quite a bit attached to it for a one and done.

  8. One of the most embarrassing goals I've seem a team concede, could see it coming with the being clever but arrogance, first couple were fine , then it got silly, then stupid , then they score , honestly joke of a goal ....the brought it on themselves. Talk about trying to see the game out in a clocking headlesss chicken way. Joke joke joke ....just as i a beginning to think turning a corner , we concede that type of goal . How do you go from couple of one touches on half way line , giving a player space , to couple of arrogant passes leading to press and head's gone moment.

Wow, really thought after the last few years i was immune to injury time goal anger , That one takes the piss

    #edit

Dont write here when that pissed off , cool down first

  9. In real time (TV) was an obvious red card. Like a wtf you doing moment. Kinda nonsense you see from idiots at sunday league. Replay even more obvious. At 2 nil up just beyond stupid. Sure you didn't get a free kick, but if you show that lack of discipline 2 up, will management really want to trust you? He's got to earn that back and learn quickly.

Everything else was just football stuff, nobody else warranted a red, only himself to blame.

As for the pen , not sure what else needs to happen , thought it was pretty blatant.

Fine if you know all the players, I don't. A bit of balance between stat overload and actual action helps. With mens football  I know enough that I'd generally and quite happily have no commentary, just crowd noise. Options would be good. I'm not so familiar with the women's game.

I get what you are saying. A bit of name checking can help, that's for sure.

But even with the man's game. That's a lot of countries and division to Have knowledge on.

Perhaps I'm slightly bias, plus a language thing. Honestly watching any game in Spanish is infuriating, every pass is spelt out every single one at times, when they tell me a cross gone too long for the millionth time, i want to punch my screen.

As for trying to do something while watching a game, forget it. The tone is full on drama, and it doesn't stop ,Passing it along the back 4 sounds like the greatest attack in history, and the ball has gone a metre.

This " commentator " is  rubbish, largely just reads stats and waffle. Hardly describes the actual play or whom is in possession or receiving a pass

Describing who is in possession and who is receiving a pass is my versión of hell. It's why in European commentaries they don't shut up for a second.

Tell me what i can't see, guide me to what i can't appreciate on TV , not what i can see and already know.

Preamble: I said last season that I thought this year we’d mount a promotion challenge. So there is confirmation bias here.

There are two weeks to go to the new season. Day one I expect us to line up Bentley-Wilson-DaSilva-Klose-Atkinson-Naismith-Williams-James-Weimann-Wells-Martin

That’s at least a mid table side.

We have a (projected) £20m striker and midfielder to come in and an international centre back, together with HNM. Depth is also there that wasn’t at RB (Tanner), CF (Conway with the extra year), MF (Sykes).

So, again, I ask why we can’t do it? And I look at the competition…

Rotherham - lost players, fall into too good for L1/not good enough for champ

    Birmingham - In crisis

Reading - Building a great side for 2014-15

    Wigan - Untried

Sunderland - Will be typical Neil side - nasty, hard to beat, but mid table

Blackpool - Appleton shows budget cuts - in trouble

Luton - can argue decent signings but from relegated side. Overachieved, unlikely to do so again

Burnley - Massive transition, both players and style

Millwall - lost best player. Mid table at best

Hull - untried team, unused to division. Shit keeper.

Watford - who the hell knows

Boro - expect to be up there. Solid and decent manager

Sheff Utd - transition again. Poor manager, coming to end of cycle

Norwich - Yeah, they might be good

WBA - two strong signings at this level, experienced manager, Dike fit - should be good

Swansea - if in 2022 Joe Allen is your hope, you give up

Stoke - see Joe Allen and read Aden Flint

Cardiff - lots of quantity, questionable quality. Rookie manager to knit it together.

Huddersfield - see Luton. Lost manager, overachieved and unlikely to hit again

Coventry - should be solid and playoff contenders

Blackburn - lost Lenihan, likely to lose Brereton - transition

Preston - a whole heap of nothing. Signings reflect that

    QPR - meh

So, I reckon with two weeks out I’m seeing nothing to change my opinion. I’d ask this. If a side, at this level, had:

    - A 20 goal championship striker last season

    - A central midfielder who is worth £20m

    - A beast of a CF who can win games by himself

    - The L2 POTY - from bloody right back!

    - The best performer from a top 6 side last year

    - A proven international CB

    - A CM who when he’s in the team increases points by 50%

    - A gk proven at this level

     Then I’d want that.

    So, why not?

Well now I'm all.hyped for the new season I've been trying so hard to ignore till it literally starts

    Thoughts @The turtle?

Great signing. The hipster of defensive midfielders. Atlético are currently a RB and CF short however.

    ................

If however you mean the shirt ,?

It looks the same ,it smells the same, it acts the same , but different enough people will buy; unlike a certain city kit which made me feel like i was watching the someone else v Portsmouth.

All it needs to make is a promotion and stuck with this monstrosity forever.

I’m not watching the game, so missed it.

Do you or anyone have a link to the incident?

If not, don’t worry, as I am sure I will be able to find something on French media.

Thought it was a yellow myself. A challenge that looked worse than it actually was

As far as I understand it, VAR will not be flagging offsides. It will work exactly as it does now, i.e. if there's a goal then it will be referred to VAR. Its just that now that decision will be made quicker. So all this talk of AI interpreting the rules, is moot.

I never feel comfortable in a world where I'm forced to agree with you

  16. I hate it. Really genuinely hate it. Every time i see it on social media I suffer kit rage.

Never thought the day would come where i hate a city home kit.  I hope this is a once in a life time experience.

End of first world problem rant. ?
