  1. He was yet another one that was touted as the replacement for Frankie.

As I recall he started well enough and, as mentioned above, did command his box way better than Frankie.

Then it all faded away thanks to that goal against Brighton.....

It's being played in their bloody winter! Players will have played in hotter conditions in Europe the precious little babes

Absolutely correct, the weather at the time of year the tournament is taking place will be like a good summers day in Southern Europe.

As for all of the other factors, totally agree, I would not be interested in going.

I have been to the UAE a number of times and there is a certain air of unwelcoming animosity, it is subtle, but it is there.

I think it will be a tournament like no other with a real risk of clashes with the authorities for the fans.

Just had a text from a Boro supporting work colleague, Wilder in at Boro on Monday.

    Good appointment that.

I suspect he may be changing his Sat Nav to Norwich

  4. Wishing Nige a full and speedy recovery.

IF, it is Covid related, and we don’t know that it is, as someone posted earlier look at what it did to Cotts who, I believe is a very very fit bloke.

Lets hope that it something much less serious and he will be back at the helm very soon.

    We need him.

I’m probably being dreadfully naive but what has the scenarios you’ve outlined in your post got to do with FFP? All you’ve said is ‘ Villa probably offered him ridiculous wages, Brighton offered him acceptable dosh, so he buggered off’ - of course Webster’s head would be turned by those offers - but you’re “astounded how many on here do not get how FFP work” - please explain how Webster leaving for a higher salary affected our club with regards to FFP?

I am sorry, maybe I was unclear, his new salary at Brighton did not effect our FFP situation but his transfer fee certainly did. In a positive way of course.

And, of course, for numerous reasons, we could not match Brighton’s offer to Webster.

  6. It still utterly astounds me how many on here do not get how modern football and FFP work.

Lets take Adam Webster as an example - was excellent for us, but that was noticed, Villa came in for him and we said no, que disappointed player due to the fact that Villa would probably have quadrupled his wages.

In come Brighton and they make an acceptable offer to the club and I am sure to the player too.

On what planet do people think he would want to stick around?

Answer he wouldn’t, it happens to all clubs and there is nothing we can do about it.

Not sure the attitude was needed.

Besides, FFP is a bit more complex than that and SL could absolutely have reinvested some of the cash that we made from sold players. When we pay a transfer fee, that amount is amortized, so the impact on the financial statements is actually pretty limited. The far bigger issue, is wages, as that is treated as an expense. The players that require big wages are the likes of players falling down the pyramid (typically, I have no specific insight into the wages of City players, so could be wrong).

This all boils down to bad management from the top and my comment is suggesting that the manager is not the main problem, it's the squad. The squad, until this past transfer window, has been assembled by Mark Ashton and SL.

Until we get better players, changing manager isn't going to do diddly squat.

    And , I agree.

Some on here fail to comprehend FFP and also the fact that we have made money from transfers out  but, we have spent that money.

Take Kasey as an example, on his day, and they are too few, he is a very good player at this level, but at an alleged £1m per year that does not work.

The club is in an utter mess thanks to Swiss Tony and the owner was asleep at the wheel.

God love us as City fans... Who are we honestly going to get that is better than Pearson? He's the most proven manager we've had in decades. The reason we're s*** is because the squad we have is s***.

We had a good couple of years and SL and Ashton got over-excited and over-confident and thought we could sell these great players and replace them with cheaper, but just as great, players. Spoiler alert; they were wrong.

Through multiple bad decisions, we've accumulated a squad that is simply not good enough and laden with players that are falling down the pyramid (Wieman, Martin, Wells, etc.) Is it a coincidence that all of those players are strikers and our biggest struggle on the pitch is scoring goals? I think not.

Basically, Pearson is the best Bristol City are going to get. I'd be happy to stay up this season and have some continuity with Pearson for at least another 12 months before suggesting we sack him. The focus for me is on Lansdown to put some serious money in to turn this ship around, otherwise I worry for us...

Goodness, how MANY times, SL cannot put money into the club, it is something that you may  have heard of - FFP - Steve is obviously a hugely wealthy man , BUT he is not allowed to invest......tiresome having to mention this yet again.

    Course NP may walk.

Cannot imagine even he imagined or realised the culture of absolute mediocrity and comfort that has soaked through this club since about 1998.

    Must be exhausting.

I actually think that is a real risk  that he may walk away.

God help us if he does.

Be very careful what you wish for Nige will sort us out BUT, as he has said, it will take 3 years.

its the truth he did nearly cost us the game. no beef just facts. . ok Nigel said it himself it was a poor performance.

And I will ask again, and I will keep doing so - replace him with whom exactly?

You clearly must have someone in mind that is attainable or are you simply being a dick?

An answer would be appreciated @Hampshire reds @Hampshire reds

BTW your answer needs to be based on all of the facts e.g. Pep is unavailable and we are strapped by FFP.

I am waiting, along, I am sure, with a few others

As per normal on here.  Some are Critical of people but cant respond when questioned. Monkeh you are one.

Bloody Hell, that is rich coming from you.

In all of your rants regarding getting rid if NP, I have directly asked you who do we replace him with, given all the circumstances?

Not ONCE have you responded! Not once!

So I will ask again, who?

I don’t think anyone doubts their professionalism . They walked into a weird set up and squad . When they both declared the team needed help when they had temporary charge , that signalled to me that the  sh1t show was vast. When Fleming came in it obviously stood on toes and they both wanted out .  Better for all . But fans really need to wake up , we are trying to come out of a huge disaster . It seems some need relegation before they understand what we are dealing with . If we can ride the storm , we will make huge progress . The pain is high but the outcome will be a far better club and a far better basis to get to and stay in the Prem. Nige may not do that but he is raising the standards from L1 to Prem .

Imho his real evaluation is next season.

Great post. Some on here do not get the mess Swiss Tony And LJ created.

Nige is absolutely the best person to fix this......and he will, I have no doubt.

Time.......it will take that, but I am certain he will leave us in a better place than he found us.

One scenario is that maybe Shakespeare and Walsh are not available as yet, "Fort is being held" so to speak until they are, maybe the Summer.

No inside info just a thought.

You are articulating a thought that I have had. The fact that there is movement in the staff suggests things are afoot.

I strongly suspect that now SL has realized he was turned over by Swiss Tony he has given Nige TOTAL control of the football side of the club, with of course the freedom to hire the staff he wants.

Things are not great but, they are also not dreadful and Nige is a very smart bloke in my opinion and will get the right people in.

The other fact that needs to be remembered is that Nige is hardly likely to be worrying about where his next mortgage payment is coming from.

He is here because he wants to be, not because he has to be.

  14. I accept I am a older chap, but there seems a lot of mention on this thread about cocaine.

I know that is it is prevalent in society in general, but is this now a thing with younger ‘fans’ attending away games? Or, I guess , home games.

It was never designed to create a level playing field, it was designed to reduce the chances of a club going bust.

Rugby finances are entirely different to those in football.  You also have relatively few top nations and therefore relatively few top leagues, there is relatively low movement between the divisions of each league, and several national teams will only pick from players playing in their national or supra-national league.  The relatively 'closed shop' enables owners to regulate their salary exposures accordingly. It's the same in most US sports where Promotion and relegation are generally unheard of.

However the cap does not cover costs outside actual players (which FFP seeks to regulate) and also carves out exemptions for significant costs.

Oh and the latest Rugby Salary Cap regulations cover 70 odd pages of text.

It was also designed to keep the status quo. FFP suits the ‘bigger’  clubs just fine. Look at the reaction from the EPL clubs last week regarding clubs being sponsored by associated companies to their owners. All voted in favor except Newcastle . And Man City who abstained.

Footballs all about opinion and those that want Nigel out are entitled to their views, it doesn’t make then clueless as they don’t conform to others ideas. I like Pearson and he’s pretty blunt at times but overall he’s doing a decent job with what he’s got.  Like any manager he will make mistakes and do I agree with everything he does , no.

    Fair and balanced post.

The thing that really gets on my nerves is the knee- jerk reaction when we lose playing not that great is the NP out posters. Apart from the fact that he has inherited a sxxt show and our FFP constraints, the question that I ask but have yet to have an answer to is ‘ and replace him with who exactly?’.

NP is a highly experienced football manager and it looks to me, but I am not ITK, that the owner has given him TOTAL control of the football side of the club.

I think in time he will get us where we want to be but, it will take time.........AND patience - a quality sadly lacking with some on here.

As supporters/fans/customers we are entitled to our opinions and unfortunately Bristol City (my club) always flatters to deceive.

Nige still has my support but the excuses regarding the mess he inherited, can only go on for so long.

We have seen very little improvement in the time he has been here and his reluctance to add at least one offensive player (loan or otherwise) during the summer was wrong.

We are in a relegation battle (along with probably 10 other teams) and i'm not quite sure how we can put a run of results together at this moment in time.

I will be at The Gate on Saturday for the Barnsley game but it will be in hope, more than expectation.

So, given ALL the circumstances, and this is a serious question, if you were SL, what would you do?

Seriously would like to hear your thoughts.

Suspect I won’t get an answer as I never do when I ask @Hampshire Redor @Hampshire reds

Yes and another issue is why he was so against a loan. As you say, a forward was needed. Loan is a decent option to have for a short term target. Like staying up for example.

As I am sure you understand Joe, loans actually cost money - there is firstly the loan fee, which for a young EPL player could be around £1m for the season. Then you have to pick up a % , or maybe all, of their wages.

Some , if not all , of these guys are on serious money, Tammy for example, when he was here, was on £25k a week at Chelsea - I have no idea how much of that we paid but I guess a fair amount.

Oh, one more thing, we are broke thanks to Swiss Tony and LJ, so none of that is possible nowadays.
