  1. ….really good documentary on Netflix about Brian Cloughs first few years at Forest getting promoted, winning the league then the two European Cups  Definitely worth a watch, an unbelievable achievement for a small club, can’t see that ever happening again.  I also spotted the Dolman stand in one clip!

The Gate’s a nice ground nowadays, but I preferred the old days of the East End. Maybe it’s too nice; too nice for the opposition, little atmosphere etc. As for the new training ground, it delivers anything but high performance and therein lies the irony.

With respect, many clubs have had nice new stadiums and have also been successful, for me the AG renovation has had absolutely nothing to do with our fortunes on the pitch. I remember us being pretty crap in the old AG for many seasons as well.  For me its all down to managers and players, and we’ve sold too many good players, bought too many bad ones, and not got the manager appointments right.

On the training ground, the name is definitely ridiculous and sends the wrong message to players and fans.  It’s all very well calling it HPC when things are going well and you’ve had proven success, but when it’s not going well you become a laughing stock.  If I was NP I’d be requesting a change to the name ASAP, if only for a physiological boost.

We routinely did spend spend higher than our league position when LJ was in charge. So no, he wasn’t a genius.

We spent 60m in 3 years under LJ. Nige has spent.. 2(?) if that.

60m in 3 years but we brought in most of that money selling the Crown Jewels we already had

I think that quality Championship players demand much higher wages and that under the current financial climate we have to cut our cloth accordingly.

We’re competing against teams with Premier League parachute payments. In reality, whilst we laugh at their tinpot new tents, they are probably quite well off compared to many other teams in L2.
So the answer to your question is ‘yes’.

Blackpool, Luton, Millwall to name 3 seem to be coping ok with similar restrictions, all I’m hearing is excuses, I’m not asking for promotion this season, I’m asking for improvement after 30 odd games of being manager, that’s not too much to ask.

Barton’s budget must be top 5 in League Two. Ours definitely is not.

So comparatively speaking, yes I do believe Pearson’s budget is tighter.

So by that rational LJ must have been a genius of a manager to do what he did, don’t you agree?

I think budget is irrelevant, Nige has had 30 odd games and we are no better than when he took over, in my view that’s enough time to show some shoots of recovery, especially for a guy of his experience

Barton has been allowed to completely overhaul his squad (a squad who were outside the L1 relegation zone when he arrived) and practically bring in an entire new team. Pearson has been tasked to work within a very tight budget despite shipping out so many players in the Summer. I would argue that Pearson’s challenge is far bigger than Barton’s.
Ridiculous to compare the two, Barton should be doing far better than he is and we all knew what to expect from City this year and we knew it would be tough.

Saying “we could get relegated and they could get promoted” is just stating the obvious. Sooner or later it will happen, we’ve found ourselves in the same division as other similar sized clubs before, Yeovil and Burton for example.

You really think Pearson’s budget, comparatively speaking, is tighter than Barton’s budget at Rovers?  Really?  All I’m stating is facts, Barton unbelievably has managed to cobble together a team with no money who has started winning, I don’t think it’s much to ask that Pearson, after 30 odd games and the end of last season to work out what needs doing, to start doing the same, especially considering his experience

Based on what? They are halfway up the bottom division.

It is an enormous gulf still.

I posted this on other thread as well.  It’s amazing when you compare Joey Barton’s record at Rovers compared to NP’s at City.  I think they took the jobs about the same time, Barton took on much more of a basket case IMO with arguably one of their worst squads ever, and he seems to, against all odds, have started to get a tune out of them (albeit in League 2), whereas NP is way more experienced and to date has a worse record than Joey Barton, and there’s no way anyone can tell me we were in a worse state than Rovers.  I hope NP turns it around but he should have some idea by now of what to do surely, and if not will he ever?

it’s not beyond the realms that we could get relegated, especially based on form over the last few seasons.  And League 2 is so tight with so much dross, it doesn’t take an amazing side to get promoted, so that massive gulf you speak of is not as massive as you think it is

Crikey just goes to show how different opinions are. NP may work out but he’d only be a 2 or 3 for me. Football is a results game and I would without question have expected better. I genuinely don’t understand the support he gets from the fans but we’ve all got different opinions and I presume fellow fans are seeing something I’m not.

Tweeted with the original poster of the ratings list on twitter to tell him his opinion of Ward was way off base. His response was that he didn't see any of the 97/98 season because it was around the time his first child was born.

He's only based his opinions on what he's seen.

What a ridiculous response! Just don’t give him a score if that’s the reason, not a 2 and then also comment ‘another awful appointment’.  Even if he didn’t go I assume he was aware we got promoted which is quite rare in the last 30 years!

Never fails to amaze me how City fans can rate Danny Wilson so highly.  Four years with a very strong squad and he failed to get us promotion.  Appalling.

Perhaps judgement on Pearson should be reserved, but as things stand then he must rate in the bottom three.

I appreciate he didn’t get us promote, as mentioned in my post, but I enjoyed the football we played in his time at the club.  I’d rather we played great football and miss out than crap football and miss out!

NP is easily on course for one of the worst managers we’ve had in 30 years, but I hope he’s as good as I think he is and will turn it around but it’s not going to be easy!

Indeed, the same Danny Wilson who spent a fortune by third division standards (think what the equivalent of the £600k we paid for Lee Peacock would be today for instance) and failed compared to Gary Johnson, who got promoted on a relative shoestring.

Quite apart from the culture Wilson allowed that is.

Though I can think of one forum member who would disagree.?

But for me as a fan I enjoyed the Danny Wilson years, football was entertaining, some legendary City players in that era too, great times even if we never got over that playoff finish line.

For what it’s worth, my top 5 managers since supporting city from 1990 are:

    1) GJ

    2) Joe Jordan

    3) SC

    4) John Ward

    5) Danny Wilson

    Worst 5 managers:

    1) Steve Coppell

    2) Tony Pulis

    3) Big Fat Benny

    4) Tinnion (sorry Brian!)

    5) SOD (the football was awful but he did lay some ground work for SC)

Crazy that Pulis and Coppell were successful at the top level elsewhere but couldn’t do it here.

The Pearson project just seems too far gone now. Physios to coaches, we are pot committed.

The worrying thing for me was the holden team just needed organisation and discipline.

We seem over reliant on younger players who through no fault of their own, lack the mental toughness, the resilience and guile to see out 90 minutes of championship men's football.

We are toothless up front, too soft in midfield, disorganised in defence.

To me that was obvious from the start, maybe Pearson knew that too, as he seems genuinely agitated and almost finding this job funny.

I'm tired of the same 'im cross  smile, i have my opinions on this squad, loooooook, adjusts glasses, empty threats and promises' for every abject performance.

Maybe the fault lies at SLs door, but its making the ashton and lj days look like heaven right now.

Maybe LJ and Ashton were not appreciated as much as they should have been?  I’m not a lover of either particularly, but just looking at where the club is since they’ve departed.
Everyone wanted them gone because we just missed out on the playoffs for a few years and the football was bad to watch, but we were never worried about relegation.  Reminds me of the Danny Wilson era in as much as we kept just missing out on promotion so got rid, and it took a number of years to find the cohesion again.

It's all how great everything is in training, who's pranked who and similar bollocks and yes, until the performances show that we have a team who are putting their bodies on the line for this club, WE DO NOT WANT TO SEE IT...!!!

It's media because we need to put content out, not because it's worth watching

WE?  You don’t speak for me or everyone else either

  14. Levy should have sold Kane, you can’t be having want away players (especially your main man) as it’s going to screw up any cohesion and team spirit.  I don’t think any manager will do any better until they address that

Another thing worth noting, it proves that all the talk of acoustics and crowd placement doesn’t mean shit if the stadium is willing to support the team vocally.

I’ve said it a few times on here, there was no issue with acoustics when we beat Man Utd, a great atmosphere is there for the taking if the fans get behind the team

    Fun Barnsley fact.

Ex City Left Back, Darren Barnard (great player for us), who went on to join Barnsley in the Premier League for £750000 missed several games in the 97-98 season for them because of a leg injury.

What caused the injury? He came downstairs one morning and into his kitchen and slipped on a puddle of dogs piss his dog had very kindly left as a surprise on the kitchen floor.

    ?

Darren Barnard was quality for us, we had a string of great left backs at that time
