But have we been on top in games? I'm not sure about that. I've said this a million times but passing it around your cbs whilst the opposition allow you to do that isn't what I'd class as being on top.

I'm not sure that the data suggest we're heading in the right direction.

The xG comment annoyed me too.

One minute he's saying he doesn't use any data when deciding on subs and instead just uses a feeling and the next he's trying to use data in an attempt to show we are heading in the right directions. I don't know, those things just don't marry up to me.

There is something about his integrity

Just because he doesn’t do that for subs doesn’t mean he will to assess our progress. Highly doubt he’s glued to a computer screen during the game to make all his in game management decisions

I don’t want to pretend everything is great, and I really feel for those that travelled such a long way yesterday.  But it is really as bad as many make out?

We’ve had some poor results, but LM is trying to change some things and all of our defeats under him have been by a single goal to reasonably or very decent sides. The Sky report on last night said City “can take heart from a performance that so nearly produced a fightback”, we “created the best chances” early on, we were “the much better side” for the last 30 mins, and we “could easily have come away with a share of the spoils”.

And reading the “Gaffer speaks” thread I think there are many people on here waiting to put a negative spin on anything he says or does:

    • he is apparently “broken”, but would you want him to be upbeat after a defeat or in denial that some things weren’t going well?
    • he “got it wrong” as he speculated that some players might be overloaded mentally, but isn’t a bit of self reflection like this far better than pretending that everything you’ve done is great?
    • he has been criticised for not playing the likes of Yeboah, but when he does this he is wrong for bringing off (the perhaps tiring) Sykes or one poster suggested he was just responding to what he read on here!
    • he’s described as “personality vacuum” and similar, but we’ve employed him to coach a football team, not as an entertainer
    • there are also comparisons with LJ which I think are wide of the mark.  LJ really was an example of a “not my fault, I’m doing everything right” manager, whereas LM already comes across as much more honest, open and likely to respond in a good way.

Other posters have commented on how enthusiastic the players appear under his management.

At the end of the day, it might not work out.  But I really hope we can give him a fair chance.

Bang on, despite the results not being ideal. Performances for the most part have been good and you can see what he’s trying to implement, some people need to realise you can be angry at the Pearson sacking and give Manning time to prove himself

You are under selling a bit. One dimensional country attacking is a bit low, granted Scott is a huge hole, fully fit Naismith, Atkinson, quire possibly McCrorie could bring a bit more but Plymouth, most of the Stoke game, Swansea away, phases of Hull and Millwall away.

Last half hour we put Ipswich under huge pressure and can we discard the WBA first half.

Manning is trying to change too much too soon I think. No we haven't got a top 6 squad, transition is and will be quite painful but it's all so needless.

Ipswich game wasn’t that good, other than the Cornick effort which hit the keepers back we didn’t create any big chances. More shots and shots on target tonight than we had in that game.

Agree around the rest good performances but that’s very few in a lot of games Pearson still managed this season, do think performances were very weak towards the end of his tenure. Some you can blame on injuries but the most part we were capable of better

Not getting at you. But Manning has precisely no history of getting results over a longer term. His best results actually came instantly at MK Dons after taking over Russell Martin’s side in August. Given time, and the chance to build his own squad, they ended up in the relegation zone (acknowledging they lost Twine but a good coach absorbs that loss without that tailspin),

There is no “fact of the matter” that Manning won’t get instant results but will on long term. In fact, on the limited history the inverse is actually true and I wish people would stop stating proveably incorrect statements as fact,

Transition between Martin and Manning would’ve been easy as Martin is heavily possession based. Oxford he didn’t win any of his first 6 games before hammering Cheltenham 4-0. Not saying results long term is guaranteed, I’m just saying that I have hope

Sorry this is not how it was sold.

We were missold. A solid base was inherited, 40% win ratio, 1.4 PPG, equal or positive GD not certain which.

It’s not how it was sold because our chairman is delusional about our squad. It’s a decent squad, my prediction was top half but also very suited to absorbing possession and one dimensional counter attacks. Look at his record at Oxford early on, I know they were massively underperforming but he didn’t win any for a fair few games then instantly hammered someone. I do think he will get it right but not as fast as some fans and definitely the hierarchy think it will

Happy to be proved wrong....but I feel that the step up maybe too much for LM. Championship is entirely different to league one....look at what happened when we first came up with Cotts.....we ate L1 up....then struggled for the first 3 seasons..

I just think he’s been put in a position where the hierarchy wants instant results but when he has different principles it’s going to take time. When Lansdown and Tinnion is saying this is a top 6 squad it puts him in a difficult position

  7. Fact of the matter is with Manning you can’t expect to get instant results, which is what everyone’s comments about it being a top 6 squad even more laughable. I like Manning and I do have full belief that it can come good but if we’re looking at players at their current state, they’re not good enough for where the hierarchy think we should be

    Assist today.

Those who think he’s our biggest problem need to look a lot deeper.

I don’t think he should be starting however I also don’t think he’s as bad as people have made out. Assist today and massively involved in our opener last game, can’t comment on today as I didn’t go but thought first half against Norwich was the best I’ve seen him this season

My own expectations were for us to be challenging for the play offs under Pearson.

2 points away at Huddersfield and QPR is shit mate. Yes it's better than losing but we're never going to be getting to the Premier league if we're thinking a point at a team that's likely to be relegated is a positive.

We need to be angry at ourselves that we only got a point.

No I wouldn't have been. I'd have been saying the same as I likely did when we drew there last season.

My personal expectation is top half but obviously the board is higher, Huddersfield for me will go down so naturally I wanted all 3 but QPR were always a managerial change away from looking good and pushing up the table again. When you consider that and the fact that Manning had two days of work with the players I’d say that’s a decent point

So how is Cifuentes able to turn it around far quicker?

Their squad is definitely worse than ours & was playing prehistoric football under Ainsworth..

We on the other hand are back to the rinse and repeat of 3 transfer windows..

Said this before but for me, under Ainsworth they were playing a style that didn’t suit the players they had. The squad was capable of much more and had players who are better in possession but are not physical at all. Players like Chair and Willock suit the style their playing right now perfectly

Fair so a bit higher than 11th and a tilt at the top 6, but still short of the playoffs with some additions?

It's a stronger League yeah- the 7th-12th on the poll seems sensible tbh.

Yeah I’d agree with 7th to 12th, I’m just looking at that top 6 Leicester, Leeds and Southampton look guarenteed, Ipswich I think will drop off but not quite out of the top 6, Sunderland will make it (even without Mowbray) and I think for the last spot West Brom, Middlesbrough and Hull just look a bit stronger than us at the moment

11th seems reasonable if a little underwhelming. Albeit if money is spent in January do your expectations adjust accordingly?

For Lansdown’s ambition its underwhelming yes but I just think this year is stronger than before. With a couple of additions I think playoffs can be possible but I think we’ll come up short, I’d feel more confident if the quality is similar to last years Championship

I'm trying to piece together a few things and wondered about everyone's expectations for this season. What would have been a reasonable finish this year under Nigel?

Nigel himself stated, 'We feel that we've got a really good chance of being in the promotion race.' I don't believe he was criticised for this at the time, unlike JL.

So, let's consider if Pearson was in charge now; would we be experiencing all this commotion? And where would you have expected Pearson to have finished this year?

Do you think Pearson would have guided us into the playoffs? If so, why is JL receiving criticism for saying we have a top 6 squad when Pearson essentially said the same thing himself (as mentioned above)?

I don’t think we’ll be in the playoffs under Manning or we would’ve been under Pearson. I predicted us 11th at the start of the season and I think under both managers around there would be a fair placing

This is a genuine question for those that follow things a little closer than I do, but I hope someone can help.

We keep being told that we have this amazing production line of young talent coming through that in theory are championship ready - based on JL saying we have a top 6 ready squad, and the view that we need to use the academy before looking outside as Tinnion said last week. But the U21s have just had a six-match winless run until they beat Colchester United today. How are these players as good as we are being told?

Think the U21 are a weird one to judge as you don’t know what team you’re going to get or what teams you’re going to face in regards to first team players. As @GrahamC mentioned a lot of the regulars are with the first team/out on loan. U18 and U16 however according to Tinnion at the fans forum had some very good results recently and there was one player (could be Meerholz but pretty sure he said 16 years old which he’s not) who had interest from the prem so immediately he trained with the first team last week

We may find the new Alex Scott but we won’t know until they get an opportunity in the first team. That’s something that Mr Pearson was very good at it. Hopefully Liam will be the same.

Has spent a lot of time with academy teams at the top level aswell so would’ve thought it will happen
