  1. Maybe we should throw Kevin Friend into the mix as well. It’s well known he’s a city fan and just like his performance in that preseason game against Villa last season is maybe trying a little too hard to show that he’s impartial now he’s in charge of championship referees

Seems more plausible than the anti Pearson WhatsApp group

Semenyos is as blatent as they come and a clear major error that VAR would change. Pawson pointed to the ball but the defender was no where near. Awful decision.

Atkinson was also a penalty but a little more subjective. Given the major error for the first most humans would definitely give that one following.

My question is WTF is the crowd doing. Need to get right on the refs back but there is none of that these days

That also highlights how ridiculous it is to have a competition with effectively different rules dependent on whose ground it is. VAR should be at all grounds or no grounds in this competition

Gabby Logan is an excellent presenter on all sports covered by the BBC and she doesn’t pretend to be anything else. I find several of the female pundits (Emma Haynes excluded) voices irritating. They rarely contribute anything of interest.

Have to agree regarding Gabby Logan, i didn’t watch the World Cup so don’t know whether she’s improved or not but when Alex Scott started on soccer am she was pretty wooden

I think Dennis Smith brought in Brian Mitchell (or am I getting mixed up), either way, it sent a shiver down my spine remembering it all.

I was one of the sad souls still turning up and witnessed the booing of Russell Osman when he scored, it was all around the ground! and shocked him. I cannot remember if I joined in (I dont recall doing so!), but it was some of the worst football I had every seen....

Pretty sure the booing was directly related to him releasing Dziekanowski who if i remember correctly gave a farewell speech over the pa either before that game or at half time

  5. It’s important to realise that change will take time. We had Mike Riley in charge for years who only seemed good at sending letters of apology whilst standards continued to fall

So don’t be surprised if it takes another season or two before standards bottom out. As for VAR the concept is good but the application is terrible, I’d like to see a time limit put on reviews so if an offence is not found within 90 seconds for example then it’s not clear or obvious

There are 63 other clubs in the 3rd round, so if you assume there are say 10 glamour draws , then your chance of getting one is only one in 6.3. So, not really surprising at all.

Especially when every year at least two of them draw each other

Watched it and thought it was decent- was too young to be aware of a lot of the political back drop before the tournament so thought it provided some good context around that.

As a child I loved the 80s- looks a bitch of a decade to live through if you were an adult though

My memories of being a child of the 80’s is lots of tech that looked nice but didn’t really work and a string of disasters from the middle of the decade

There is, I believe the EFL post admin Business Plan.

No transfer fees, no loan fees apparently, heavily restricts remuneration...have read to £8m on players, dunno whether that's per year or how it is distributed. All incoming transfers must be approved by the EFL.

Whether it's tough enough is a different matter, would be interested to see how othet clubs react to this- I expect that they are or will be interested to say the least..

Remember the EFL is made up of the clubs and the clubs comprise the EFL.

Couple of the key details although how exactly they align?

£12k per week averaged across say a 25 man squad is a £15m annual wage bill yet the article states £8m per year??

Didn’t stop them poaching another teams manager though..

I went to Swansea last year and we went out at final whistle, the reason being was that it was absolutely chucking it down. Although it was still kickin off on dual carriageway

I did both last season. At Cardiff we got kettled after the game and at Swansea it was before and in the reverse fixture neither happened

I also happen to believe that the police made decisions on the day with the best intentions. Given the environment around football support at the time, I think there was  a real risk of crowd trouble outside the ground and of people getting hurt if they didn’t open the gates . Therefore, they thought the safest (least riskiest) thing to do would be to let them into the ground.  It was a terrible decision to have to make, and with hindsight the wrong decision, but one made with the right intention. As BTRFTG said, the police didn’t crush anyone - but they did fail to prevent one.

What is really unforgivable though is the cover up that happened afterwards.

It was policed by someone who’d only been in the job a month and who’d never policed a major football match before. So in a sense he was set up to fail but arrogance both on his part and SYP played a very big part in what transpired

Didn't the same thing happen at the semi final the season before but luckily there were no deaths?

Having read the independent panels report the previous year was uncomfortable and some people got pulled up into the seats above but the major difference was police were organised the year before and operated a filter system outside the stadium meaning what occurred at the turnstiles before the game never happened

I’d urge anyone who still blindly thinks that hillsborough was the fault of the fans to download the independent panels report some of it is very eye opening about how it could've been any teams supporters that day
