Seems odd that he was described as a player out of our reach if he hadn't had an acl injury, we say we are confident he is over his injury but we only sign him for a year

Sounds like they are not sure on the injury (Leeds didn't take the gamble) but think he is worth the risk on a short term contract. By the end of the season it will be clear one way or the other if he is over the injury. Even with modern day surgeries a fair percentage of players who suffer this injury do not get back to playing at a professional level again.

So what happened with Leeds?  Why did the deal fall through?

Actually have some insight here, for once (bunch of Leeds fans I know)!

Been told Ekstrand turned up there expecting to do as he has here, i.e. trial to prove fitness in order to win a contact.  However, within the first few days they kept pressuring him to sign a short-term deal on reduced terms, despite his previous understanding that this would be assessed over time.

With them unwilling to allow him to stay and train while not under contact, and Ekstrand not willing to tie himself to a deal he didn't believe was suitable, he left and as the club had already told the media he was training with them, they then briefed out that he'd left after failing a medical, which wasn't the whole truth of the situation (as in he probably would have, but never reached that stage).

That's from a couple of folks who socialise with Leeds players, who told me this unprompted when they got advised he'd come to train with us, which was around the time Mark Ashton mentioned LJ meeting a 'big Scandinavian', so figured there might be some truth to it.

May be the player only wanted a year to get fit and then be free to decide if he stays here or goes to a higher placed club .

Welcome Joel! About time too!

The Watford fans are full of praise and most are saying he should walk into our when fully fit! I expect we'll see him properly at Fulham away in the cup. Can't see LJ dropping Magnusson at the moment.

Me neither. He's started so he'll finish

You are a Cynic, not everyone is a money grabbing tosser.

he asked why a pro in their right mind would play for leeds I answered, why would a pro move to another club, 99% of the time it is about money, it was with Kodja, it was the case with balsie, murray carey and many of pro's who leave a club, They get offered better terms there for money is the answer,

I can't think of many current pro's who stay at a club for loyalty these days, its a passion for us fans its a job for the pro's and like us in our professional life you try and get the best terms available to you,

Ie. players move to basket case clubs for money

It makes complete sense for both. You don't know if is knee is going to be a problem in the future unless he's plays

Seems a sensible term for both parties.  Who knows what other terms, commitments are included.  Might have something similar to Wilbs re matches.

That works both ways and it was always going to be a short term deal.

Works well for us as we have a very experienced and accomplished player as competition and backup and he proves his fitness in order to get himself a deal with a bigger club next season.

Yeah I get that, what I was inferring was I was surprised there was no option for an extension if he played x number of games

I've seen a lot of negativity surrounding Ekstrand, which is a shame because this could turn out to be an inspired purchase, and allow LJ to rotate his players a bit more. Ekstrand isn't exactly shit, and a one year deal is the best for both parties. Ekstrand can get his career back on track, and we get a low risk solution that could reap its rewards, especially if he does well and decides to repay the faith we've shown in him.

Nosworthy?

Thanks mate. that was the bloke. Class. We should have made more of an effort to sign such a top notch defender permanently back then. I'm really pleased that City are emphasising improving the team from the back now. I just can't remember us ever doing this before.

I've not seen much on here, but on Facebook there's loads of people that aren't too pleased with this transfer.

Says more about them than the player or City .

There is a risk that it does n't work out but it's not as though we've paid out anything in transfer fees for an experienced international who could help us to improve .

Even if he breaks down he can still be a useful addition to the squad in a coaching mode for our other young defenders .

There are no guarantees when you bring a new player in regardless of fee or ability .
