Ray Parlours autobiography is brilliant, so many funny stories, and crosses over from the old school culture to the Wenger years, I read it in a few days, could put it down!

Not football, but Shoe Dog is a brilliant read, all about the story of the guy who set up Nike to try and compete with Addidas, sounds boring but it was really good, one of the best sport related books I’ve read

He is certainly a good top class player, but he really a ‘great top class  world player’

Man Ure once had all the great players..now they seem to possess players of good premier league standard…it seems other clubs now capture the worlds best such as the noisy neighbours Man City ?

either way good luck to the guy.

Man Utd had their fun during the Fergie years, so they definitely are due a long fallow period! ??

Doesn’t annoy me in one little bit but it seems your rant is that you took your kid and it upset you, quite what the weather has anything to do with it I’m not sure as for cricket you mean the sport where they are fighting in the stands all the time(there is a thread if you look)and let’s not get started on the myth of no trouble at rugby games,as for your son be a proper parent and tell him what he heard was wrong, not rocket science

    Wow

It also goes into other factors as to why some people become so successful and goes without saying there are always outliers who are exceptions or others who accept their start point and work harder - it’s the point of it & why it interesting as there are known disadvantages but they can also be used in the right way as an opportunity.

Seen it with August born kids who had to work twice as hard from early on but when they physically & mentally catch up they can overtake their counterparts.

Determination is a key factor but depending on the sport or country; birth date can be a disadvantage to overcome.

I can defo understand kids young in the year struggling as could be a year behind

Theres an interesting book; Outliers by Malcom Gladwell where they explore “the Matthew effect” outcomes based on birth month for the Canadian Hockey team and how being born a certain points can create disadvantages due to cut off dates for age groups when they are kids.

Sounds interesting.  I was intrigued to see how many of the top sportsmen the birth month applied to.  I didn’t hunt around and just chose a sample of those ones which seemingly didn’t link in with the Matthew effect

However if you want to give your child the best chance of succeeding as an athlete you need to aim to have the kid September - November :fear:

This is awkward unless you meant you must conceive Sept to Nov?

Spot on. Footballer's don't go down easily "because they're big softies", they go down easily to make it clear to an official that they've been fouled, and to try and win a free kick/penalty for their team. In some cases, they stay down to exaggerate the injury such that the opponent receives a more severe punishment.

Exactly that, I don’t like that they have to do it, and I’d like to think that they don’t like doing it either, but it’s where we are in the game unfortunately

  10. I’m assuming this all means in theory that the club could put a lot more safe standing in place?  I assume this then means it will only happen if fans put pressure on?  I can’t see the club just doing it off their own back

Save Law 11 isn't 'black and white', that's why we have pigs ear debates each and every week. Recall, it's not an offence to be in an offside position, so try writing the algorithm to resolve as and when it does become an offence.

Guaranteed first game we'll see play halted quickly (because VAR flagged it,) only for pundits to highlight that although the player was in an offside position he wasn't committing an offence.

Here's a thought. Before starting the farce,  use the technology to analyse decades of many of the greatest and most memorable goals in football, and see them scratched off.

If that’s the case then they will change/tweak the rule to make it work I’m sure.  Although AI can learn what ever the rule is and reproduce what a human can for much more complicated things than the offside rule so might not be a blocker anyway, who knows, I’d rather they never introduced it personally, I’m enjoyed the debate and the acceptance that sometimes you get decisions and sometimes you don’t!

This is definitely where VAR will go and needs to go.  Black and white decisions like offside should and will be instantly picked up using AI technology and once you have the instant decision, it takes away the delays of making the decision, which is what we all want and it will cease to be an issue.

The problems that VAR (automated or not) can’t solve is subjective decisions like fouls, unless they change the rules to make it black and white.  Using VAR as they do now just gives another person a go at making a decision after the ref which takes more time.

It’s a disgrace that the FA and more importantly the government are still allowing these shady individuals from overseas to buy our football clubs.

It stinks of what was going on at FIFA to be honest, would not be surprised if back handers and suitcases of cash are changing hands behind the scenes

hilarious - i experienced a range of Birthday celebrations, from the bumps to the 'gob squad' which involved you getting spat on by a whole bunch of ********.

At our school things got out of hand when a chap called Micheal Morris got chucked out of a first floor window of the art block on his birthday. he broke his arm (understandably) and they had to try and crack down on the rampant random, and quite ingenious, acts of violence often handed out.

(Micheal Morris also had his front teeth broken in another Birthday related incident - i hope he grew up not hating birthday parties...!)

    Such fond memories....!

Not school but when I worked for McDonalds in the mid 90’s, they had a thing when somebody left, on their last shift everyone in the kitchen would spray them with Big Mac Source (which burns if left on skin), and chuck them in the big sink with the washing up at the end of their shift.

The extra kicker was that the ‘victims’ change of clothes had also been put in a bucket of water and put in the walk-in freezer a few hours before, so when they went to get changed they were presented with their change of clothes in an ice cube!

After 4 years witnessing this I didn’t tell anyone accept the main boss I was leaving and kept my head down on my final shift, walking out as clean as a whistle!  Not sure you would get away with this sort of thing these days!

Utter waste of time. Twenty odd years of his stewardship and what have we got? SL grinning like the village idiot as his" legacy" is being polished by pop concerts. festivals etc., to leave him even wealthier when he finally sells up.

Oh, football, is that the game with the round ball or the oval ball, just asking? Not that interested to be honest, produces nothing for my future wealth increase

I just thank God every night, that I had a spare bedroom. I was at least bright enough to see the possibilities and grabbed onto Peter Hargreaves shirt tail. Who says an accountant (qualified?) is the dullest bloke on the planet and will empty the pub in under five minutes? Peter stays in Somerset and pays his full UK taxes, Sap. It's lovely in Guernsey. Am thinking of having Davefevs and some of his sycophantic disciples over for a day or two

    Jayjay are you Peter Hargreaves’s?

One of my brothers lives in the same part of the world as the OP.

He certainly didn't expect the club to help him out with tickets last time he came over, or to be prioritised over regular fans, and the OP probably doesn't either.

Many exiles from all over the world can only watch City once in a blue moon and quietly fit in a match or 2 around a visit home without any special treatment from the club.

Good luck to the OP in getting tickets for the matches he wants to go to - there'll be no problem with the home games and the best part of his plan imo. is to watch several games rather than just one. From my experience of taking fans to one-off games over many years you can just about guarantee it will coincide with a dreadful City performance that so dampens their enthusiasm they're left wondering by the end how anyone can stand going regularly, as was the case on my brother's last match.

With a plan to watch 3 games the OP can be hopeful at least one of them should be a pretty good City performance and mid Feb looks a reasonable trio of games without the possible ticket complications of trying to include Cardiff away.

That's what his wife wrote in her letter; which is why they have it in quotation marks.

It does seem excessive given that as a rule of thumb is that one bottle of wine equals four pints.  I worked with someone who didin't eat at all during the day but every night had a big meal and two bottles of wine; if he was pushing the boat out he might go up to four I suppose.  I couldn't drink sixteen pints of beer though; the sheer volume alone would make it impossible.

Maybe they were on those miniature ones!
