So, you have a CD player in the car, or you never actually played the CD? ?.

Reminds me of the scene in The Office Xmas special where Gareth admits he bought multiple copies of David Brent’s single (if you don’t know me by now) for friends but they are still in his garage

Needed a move from Spurs for a long while before he left. This move may have come too little too late for him.

Far from being over the hill, he really has to knuckle down and kick on again though, otherwise he's going to be one of those players that nobody wants because he's on too much money and doesn't give you a return for it.

Touch or  no touch from the keeper, it could have put Alli off slightly. That being said, he really should have connected better with it.

I actually think Everton could really struggle this year.

They really struggled last season and I can’t see Frank being the man to sort things out either, no track record at all of doing this, he will be long gone my Xmas is my prediction!

I have always liked the idea of the bands because it has the potential to showcase local talent, but like a lot of things you feel more could be done, like a little more information about the bands that play. That could be down to the bands themselves though, a bit of self publicity (flyers or information board by the stage).

I understand what some are saying about the quality, but presumably we will always have bands that are at different stages of their careers so it will always vary.

Regarding the quality, as I'm passing the stage there is occasionally something that makes me stop to listen. It's s rarely about the obvious, singers or lead guitar, but the drummer. If the drummer is reasonably competent, it brings the quality of the whole sound up a notch in my opinion.

Agree, a tight rhythm section is key, the bass and drums have to be both locked in tight and consistent, however a terrible singer or lead guitarist can ruin any band!  My band has been going for 25 years or so now, same line up, so It’s almost second nature really, so when an inevitable mistake happens, we can usually carry on through!

Must be a good year or two since that nice Mr Jovi played.

The kids still have him in the hit parade, so he must be due another go soon.

Not on his current form!  Google Bon Jovi’s voice 2022! Ouch

The booking agent is Hoggans Promotions tel 07923 827352. He's based in Aztec West and books most of the pubs in the Bristol Area.
My band has played the fanzone which was booked via Brian Hoggans. TBH it's a nightmare for parking as you don't really get any so loading in and out is challenging.

I’m on it, I’d actually booked some gigs through him previously, but we haven’t gigged much last couple of years for obvious reasons so have been out of the loop.  Loading of gear is the worst bit of being in a band, the worst was playing a wedding on the SS Great Britain, the room we were in meant we had to walk the length of the boat first then go through little doors, up some tiny steps and then walk the length of the boat again!  No joke with a heavy 100w Orange valve amp!

I'd liase with Jerry as a starting point

I'd be interested in the answer too, gave details of a few acts a while ago but they never hear anything recently (these were decent bands and not dropped because of quality)

Thanks, sorry who is Jerry is he on here?

The Gas have apparently got a map of North Bristol on their new home shirt.

Presumably this is to help their shit plastic fans find the Mem on a Saturday afternoon for once? Must be difficult when most haven’t been for years…

I hope Downend isn’t on it!

Good for you, all I'm saying is the media (especially BBC) are trying to hype it up to a level that matches the men's game (i.e. EVERYONE is interested). What really does it for me is when they went on about the girl being second only to Rooney's record of scoring for England ! Apples & Oranges .

Would you rather they downplayed it and reminded everyone at home that womens football isn’t as popular?  Isn’t this an inferiority complex?

Of course you take your kids to football knowing they will hear it, that's par for the course and the vast majority of chanting/singing falls into that category.

But singling out a bloke with his daughter in the crowd and calling him a paedo en masse just isn't on.

What blows my mind is that this happened at a meaningless pre season friendly!

I found this interesting study, admittedly from 2003, which says:

During a soccer game all players are likely to head the ball eventually, though with varying degrees of skill, frequency, and neurologic outcome. While statistics on heading frequency for amateur soccer players are currently being developed, the heading practices of professional athletes have been examined. Tysvaer and Storli (1981) observed the total number of headings in 10 first division games, six English games and four international games. The average number of headings for all players was 111, that is, an average of six per player per game. If one plays 300 top division games, a player may expect to receive at least 2,000 lifetime head blows (Tysvaer & Storli, 1981; consider also that this estimate does not include any practice headings). This is a significant number of potential brain insults, and given the knowledge accrued regarding varying risks due to heading technique, it is imperative that athletes be sufficiently skilled in proper techniques, possibly reduce the frequency of heading, and obtain the best possible knowledge about heading and cognitive function.

    The conclusion was:

Players with the highest lifetime estimates of heading had poorer scores on scales measuring attention, concentration, cognitive flexibility and general intellectual functioning.

As is happening in rugby currently, I can see lawsuits from ex players with health issues they are attributing to heading the ball, which will lead to a change in the rules or safety equipment, if lawsuits successful

You could see more high balls with defenders unable to use their head to defend it.

You’d get a lot more fouls I think as defenders get beaten by the high ball over the top, as they can’t head it, and end up chasing the attacker and taking him down

I'm led to believe this is his style in general. I've had his 'Red or Dead' on my wish list for ages.

Might give 'The Damned United' a go but am struggling to give a toss about Leeds Utd and therefore devote time to it ; the film was ok, a good impersonation by the welsh fella. Peace has also written acclaimed novels but, like you say, his style is "interesting".  Would rather just read a good biography of Cloughie, of which there's more than one.

If you don’t like Leeds then the Damned Utd is for you!  The book is very good and much more like a novel really

  13. I wonder how different the game would be if heading was banned and treated like a handball if it happened?  I assume a lot more passing on the deck and less hoofing it up the pitch, which is a good thing, although corners would be interesting!

I can see a ban coming in the future due to the dementia risks that are coming out, same with tackling in rugby.  In the end legal litigation, if successful, would open the floodgates for claims, and insurance companies would then change what they cover, and all of a sudden it’s a domino effect
