That's the main, but not only, reason for the downbeat mood. Still early days though and let's see how we're fixed at the end of the transfer window. Anyway, back to this lad - hopefully he'll have something about him, even if he is another one "learning the game" as he goes - you still in touch with that fella who's a mad Baggies fan? What can he tell us? Going to send him a text but we’ve pretty much lost contact since the pandemic when anyway he seemed to have “lost the faith”. For me without Conway, Scott permanently & at present little clarity over resource I think we are in a period when we just need to tough it out. We weren’t great against Preston but that’s what we did, at Millwall seems like it was decent. We were very poor on Saturday though. I just can’t be doing with the “if we lose the next 3 we are in free fall” fatalist nonsense so beloved of a certain podcast. Life is short, be realistic but relentless pessimism gets no one anywhere. 22
Redtrojan
I think most of us are fairly pragmatic about level of performance. However got to be said the years and years of perennial underachievement doesn’t half start to grind!! 4

What can he tell us? He’s replied! “TGH is a youngish lad who has come through our academy. He started off as a right back/winger and still drops in there at times but he's really a centre mid player. He's been used as more of a number 6/8 (defensive midfield/ attacking midfield to you and me) but the current manager sees him more as a number 10. I think he's more suited to the number 8 role as he's fit and a good runner and a decent passer of a ball. I'm not convinced he's creative enough for the 10 role. There's a lot of disappointed Baggies fans that he's not seen as a player we want in our squad this season. As you're probably aware, we are really struggling financially and are having to let some players go either permanently or on loan to lighten the wage bill. I can't see that he earns a great deal though so wouldn't imagine it's that reason he's going. We have heard loan with no "right to buy" but not sure if the message is different for you? I think he will do a really good job for a Championship team if he can get a good run in the side and if he's played in the right position. Don't get me wrong, he's no Alex Scott but he's an honest hard working midfielder.” There you go.. 7

Preston, Millwall and Birmingham? Every game is tough in this league of course, but as games go, I think most would have taken that start of fixtures! Birmingham might be a dark horse this year to be fair though. They did look a handful.

Are you suggesting we should have refused to let him go and instead have a seriously pissed off player stinking the place out for the rest of the season? Plus the fact, 25 million quid substantially helps our ffp position over the next several years and will allow us to bring in several new players to develop the squad as a whole. Again - forcing players to stay, when they want to move, is counter productive. I would say, put yourself in his shoes, but suspect you haven't the wit. Selling someone who cost us nothing for 25 million quid isn't lack of ambition, it's football, it's business, it's where we - and about 90 other English football clubs - are in the pecking order. It's a bummer, that's life. Comprendez??? Somehow I doubt it. Edited August 22, 2023 by Merrick's Marvels

Just also worth saying with all the ‘how will we cope without him’ stuff, by the sounds of it he is out until December injured anyway. Even if he stayed we would be in exactly the same position as we are now, actually even worse off with less flexibility to bring others in. 5

Better Red
Not another one… Not that Nige likes to sign defenders but we now have the ability to pick a team of Defenders/Wingbacks (utility players) If we make the signing of Taylor GH. 8 could/have played CB and we need another one ? In contrast I think we have 2 Strikers and one is out for 3 months but we need another utility player. I have no problem with that as long as we bring in some cover for Conway even if only on loan. Its not the worst team I have seen…. Maybe goal shy but should keep a few clean sheets. Max Vyner Dickie Atkinson Tanner. Roberts McCorie Naismith Pring Taylor GH Sykes

I’m not sure it does. A 700k loan fee is shit if he does well then decides he doesn’t want to sign permanently. It seems a bit slanted to me - if we were talking (say) 300-400k loan fee then the option at £1.7m that’d seem better for us.

Yes, plus has played for England u20s last year. If he can fill multiple positions then it makes sense to use him at RB and then can deploy him or McCrorie elsewhere within the team. Looks a good signing on paper.
