Looking at that the indicator is the annual accounts. I imagine we would try to write off the cost of a deal like this over length of his contract for the purposes of the accounts meaning we could potentially spread the cost across 3/4 years?

The key to this is wAges....technically we have the money to buy most championship players but wages is where the problem lay before.

Gray will be on limited wages at Brentford so it shouldn't an issue, we could easily fit him into our wage structure....unless a prem club comes in for him which seems unlikely considering his lack of consistent track record.

Other teams in the chAmp have the opposite issue....they have the wage structure but not the 9mil to pay for him....hence why no one else seems to be in for him.

That is my understanding on the situation too, the other option is to sign him on loan so he is eligable to play tomorrow then nail the deal

That's the way it looks to me (we've already had 41.2 quoted) :

41.2 Subject to Regulations 41.4 and 41.5, a Player will only be eligible to play in a match organised by The League if the appropriate forms for his registration or the transfer of his registration (other than those referred to in Regulation 41.3) are received (including by facsimile) and found to be in order by the Executive by 12.00 noon on the day prior to the date of such match.

41.3 Subject to Regulations 41.4 and 41.5, a Player will only be eligible to play in a match organised by The League if the appropriate forms for his Standard Loan, Emergency Loan, Youth Loan or Emergency Loan of a goalkeeper transfer are received (including by facsimile) and found to be in order by the Executive:

41.3.1 in respect of any fixture played on a weekday when the Office is normally open, at least three hours before the match; or

41.3.2 in respect of any other fixture:
  • (a) 12 noon on the day of the match; or
  • (b) at least three hours before the match, whichever is the earlier.
