petehinton
Exciting signing, shame we won’t see him this season but adds to a bit of a “fresh start” all round from next season. Odd dynamic for Derby though, publicly admitting he rejected a contracted and wanted to leave, yet technically sticking around!

Interesting to see how the fans react to him but seems like the board are taking much of the stick (surprise surprise!)

Thrown him right under the bus there!

Mr Hankey
Delighted with this! Hopefully he can have a good end of the season with Derby (escaping any injuries!). A starting midfield 3 of TGH, Knight & Bird is quite an exciting prospect to look forward to.

What's that now, 3 to arrive next season and we've already signed them? Murphy, Bird and the lad from Aldershot? If we try to keep Twine, we must be losing the older guard. Mr Popodopolous
I'm sure it is a formality but do we put "Subject to EFL clearance" on all transfers? Timing thing or formality I expect. Edited February 1 by Mr Popodopolous
Jerseybean
From the Derby County OS: After receiving an offer from Bristol City which matched the club’s valuation and allowed the player to see out the season with the Rams, as well as providing clarity for all parties, Bird was given permission to complete the formalities of the transfer. The decision was made to progress with the deal as opposed to having to agree a potentially lesser compensation package in the summer or cross-border on a free transfer - and it allows Bird to remain as a member of Paul Warne’s squad over the remaining months of the season.

They have put a positive spin on it by saying they got a better fee now than they would get in the summer and are still keeping the player till the summer. Effectively saying they've had our pants down (after saying earlier that there was no way they would let him go). But they've also dumped on the player by effectively saying he doesn't want to be there. First mistake he makes, the fans will be on his back..

Not sure how it would work registration wise, but could it come down to him having 3 or 4 games and his heart not being fully in it, that Derby then decide to end the loan & just send him to us instead? Hopefully this wouldn’t happen, but just a thought perhaps, particularly if as you mention fans start to get at him. I would hope the club see some value in keeping some of the older guard around to add a little bit if experience and to help guide the talented younger players.

If this is indeed the case, then you have to say that Derby fans can have no complaints and the club have played a blinder. We on the other hand - why have we paid more to sign somebody in Jan as opposed to the summer, only to let him play for his old club for now and have him join us in the summer?

What's with the sudden weird influx of people pretending to be ITK? I'm lucky enough to get something once every couple of years from a neighbour of friend of a friend, but there are people on this forum with genuine connections to City and have regularly proved they've got an inside track on some things. Why does every tosser on Twitter feel the need to pretend to be up to date with City news? It's maladaptive and strange. Bring back Shags imo. 4

The Journalist
We sign all of Derby’s best players and Bournemouth sign all of our best players. Not a sentence you’d have expected to be saying 15 years ago when the former was in the Premier League and the latter near the bottom of League Two!

transfer reader
As good as he's been recently, I think the amount of midfielders signed lately could be telling us that Williams won't be having a new deal offered.

The fact that Derby have mentioned “cross border” shows they must’ve been worried he’d have interest outside of England (and Wales), probably Rangers and Celtic and only get €400k. We would’ve used that to our advantage, plus our own experience with Massengo. So I’m gonna stick with something like £1.0m as the fee and a series of add ons and a sell on. I don’t think they were in a position to play hardball nor gamble on him signing if they promoted. Like Aldershot the carrot of a loan back sweetens it for us. Good signing, good recruitment. Would’ve loved to see him here for the rest of the season, but next best thing. And no pissing about, he will be here on day one of pre-season. Any injury risks are part and parcel of football.
Jerseybean
EFL blog verdict 00:01 - George Elek Max Bird (CM) - [Bristol City - Derby County] - Undisclosed and loaned back It’s a travesty that a player of Max Bird’s ability, who broke into Derby’s side when they were in the Championship, has found himself in League One for the last 18 months. He now follows in the footsteps of his fellow academy graduate Jason Knight, who has had a great start to life at Bristol City. Bird is a tenacious midfielder whose ball-playing tendencies have been somewhat lost in a Paul Warne side playing next to the mercurial Conor Hourihane. His current role involves doing two players’ running, while his creative wings have been clips to enable Conor to fly, but we saw under both Rooney and Rosenior that his sweet left-foot, long-passing range and vision make him an effective deep-lying playmaker. He’ll stay at Derby until the end of the season, which is a shame for City fans as he’s ready to slot into Liam Manning’s side now, but this is another smart move from a side who look to be building an impressive squad for next season. VERDICT: LOVE IT
